Shocking About The Kilo...

it's not really that shocking at all once you read the other two paragraphs.

The kilo has been the only international standard of measure based on a physical thing rather than a mathematical fact for decades.

And that thing has been losing mass That means the kilogram has been getting lighter for years, because there are standard kilos that need to be calibrated against the master, and then re-disseminated throughout the world.

This has been a significant problem driving people bonkers for years. This solution is ideal.

Am I the only one who thinks coke every time I see the word kilo?

Should I be concerned that I am excited to see a science-y thread here on Lit?

Without running through the math...........yet, I can only wonder what the economic impact is going to be. And you can bet your ass there's going to be one eventually. All of those changes involve alteration of weights, measures, and energy.

The 'candela' change, while not impactful, is interesting in that they didn't change the root monochromatic emission wave length (540 nm) which happens to be the absorption wave length of blood hemoglobin.

Sometimes it's fun to watch you pretend to be smart, sometimes it's not. Most times it's not. Hell sometimes it's just painful.

So uh... how are you doin? You been workin out? You're lookin great. You seem like the kinda guy who likes to get down, likes to experiment, like to be cool. :rose:

You seem like the kind of guy who throws down 15 grand for a fun weekend, come on I know you got money. Buys his coke by the kilo... Candi needs a new sugar daddy.

The the blazes is a mole?

I'm so glad you asked that. I vaguely remember this from chemistry but I didn't want to ask and look like the dumbass who doesn't know things.

Something to do with chemistry is literally all I can remember. So... that organic chem class was something like 3 grand well spent.

The shocking part is a backhand reference to Ampere, Ohms Law etc.

Sometimes I get a little too subtle...

Of course it's been losing mass.

Where do you think all those KILObits that run the interwebs come from? Mars bars?

That's a lie. I measured the kilo with my kilometer just this morning and it was the same as it ever was.

...

The whole purpose of moving away from the physical kilo was to stop the economic impact its loss of mass was already wreaking upon the world.

For decades, metrologists have been debating about how to move the kilo to a standard that doesn’t change to prevent financial shenanigans in modern global trade.

I work in a world where database rounding errors at 5 decimal places result in variances of millions of dollars. So do you.
