"And as bewildering, and just as terrifying to him, is the knowledge that a squad of Broward sheriff’s deputies responded to his Tamarac neighborhood, but none came close to his home to stop the man. Instead, they waited down the street until he walked over to them and surrendered, witnesses told the South Florida Sun Sentinel."

Wow! What a great department they have, now no one feels safe there anymore

"Norkunas and his neighbors flooded the 911 emergency communications system begging for help for almost 15 minutes."

"A dispatcher hears the glass breaking and alerts the 18 deputies who had been assigned to go to Norkunas’ home, according to a dispatcher’s log that documents the call and response. "

"“I’ve been on this earth 70 years, and I have never seen anything like this,” Norkunas said in an interview. “No officer came to my house. None.”"

"A woman who lives down the street has since installed a security camera on her home but says she is still living in fear."

"“I know now that I cannot count on police,” she said. “I’m very afraid. I was always thinking I’m very safe with the police, but after what happened with Bill, I am not safe."

Out of 18 officers assigned to his call, NO ONE SHOWED UP! NOT ONE!

Glad I don't live there.

For those of you that don't remember Tamarac is in the same county where Nikolas Cruz murdered 17 students while the sheriff deputies hunkered outside. Looks like the new sheriff is the same as the old sheriff.

We're finally getting the kind of policing that does not victimize young black men.
They are clearly ready now for their defunding.

You treat the police like they are the enemy and then you get to see
how your real enemy treats you when their hands are not tied.
New policing policy, "Don't call us, we'll call you!"
New victim procedure: File a report.
(You were insured weren't you?
Don't blame us if not!
That was stupid.)

But, hey, it's time for the old-fashioned to shut up and give
progressive policing a chance to work while the former pigs
are disarmed and retrained as social workers who will keep
the community safer for minorities and those who have, by
dint of race, been prevented from taking part in the owner-
ship society and have been oppressed by Capitalism's greed.
Now, they will be afforded the opportunity to take without
repercussion, just like white America has been doing forever.

I'm beginning to believe that there is a more than casual relationship between population density and collective insanity.

“Cops” the TV show was actually started in Broward county.

They’re all crazy there, in totally unpredictable ways.

I would tend to agree with this because in rural America, it is about self sufficiency and that the self-made can afford an individualistic attitude about their thoughts, words and deeds and their wealth stems from their labor, whereas the typical urban dweller is part of a cooperative where he is just a tiny cog and must cooperate with the majority in thought, word and deed in order to maintain a sustenance living or be eligible for benefit or to even become fabulously rich by taking advantage of the necessary and socially coerced cooperation of the job-scared masses. This lead to the idea that there may be just as many "individualists" in an urban environment, but not per capita. The rural rich are there by sweat equity and the urban rich are there for either their entertainment value or their ability to exploit the efforts of others without breaking a sweat.

Cops was a casualty of the mob mentality during their last round of civil unrest.

Rural folk don't have the leisure to riot. They just vote.

After a year of outrage and protest, I find it hard to believe that almost anyone on the Blue Line would want to engage with an out-of-control citizen unless they are clearly lower-class white males.

Oh bless you!

If your police force can't see the vast distance between "ignore a crime" and "once subdued, kneel on the suspect's throat until he stops breathing", perhaps you need to hire smarter cops.

Go back and watch the first season of COPS. Entirely different tone. More about service to the community and even some of their personal life and at home interactions. It made Deputy Linda Canada sort of a minor star.

""I've been in this business about 30 years and all I've seen is cops portrayed as Dirty Harry and Starsky and Hutch - people who go around firing .44 Magnums all the time," he said. "Anything with a script is definitely not a realistic approach to law enforcement."

(Then Sheriff Nick) Navarro said that as Cops rolls on in series, viewers will see that it's not all just bullets and busts.

"This opportunity was given to me to show men in law enforcement as we really are, and I jumped at it," he said. "I think the public is going to be surprised that we don't kill 10 people in half an hour and we don't violate the rights of 50 citizens in an hour. We want to show the community that they're paying for professionals.

"In the first 10 shows put into production, you are not going to see a shot fired. You're going to see the more emotional side of our work. We're all human beings who get involved in emotional situations with people in the community. We have many more faces than just throwing people in jail."

Ten episodes without a gunshot? No civil rights violations? Maybe Fox isn't doing it for ratings after all."

Some of the Ft. Worth episodes were almost funny.

It was several years into the run when things took a turn to the dark and violent mess it became.

COPs is highly edited and selective in what they show which is why
they shut down there for a while. They'll be back to nice happy cops,
I'm sure, but that drives ratings about as much as Happy Days reruns.

No, the problem is that with the millions of daily interactions between the police
and the citizenry, in the age of the 24/7 news cycle on internet steroids,
that an extremely minute subset of those interactions becomes
sensationalized and used by the Progressive Left to
virtue-signal their hate of the pigs based upon
the exception proves the rule fallacy.

One, two, even three or four incidents over the course of a couple of years only proves
how disciplined, on the whole, our law enforcement officers are,
but unfortunately, this rush to judgement causes the police
to exercise reticence which, in turn, increases crime.

So in the frenzy to "defund the police" to protect the minority community
you actually cause the minority community to demand more policing
since they are the ultimate victims of the Progressive's
alligator-tears altruistic concern for them.
The people calling for war on the police
live in safe communities.

They never see, personally, the results of that which they agitate for.
They take advantage of a community's momentary grief
thus ensuring future escalating grief that does not
involve the police simply because the police
no longer want to be involved...

Really?

If they no longer want to be involved, then they should stop taking their monthly pay cheque from the tax payer, and get a job that's less demanding. As I would be expected to, should I ever decide I don't want to do the job my boss is paying me to do.

I found this list interesting.

Are American police just heavy handed, or is America a more dangerous society where the rates are justified, or is it a combination of both?

You need to look into the stories here of police taking early retirement
and resigning from the force because they run the danger of being the next
inadvertent target, so yes, they are doing exactly as you suggest they do coupled
with not doing anything much because it seems to be what their community
(their employers) is vociferously demanding, that when interacting
with their community, they stand down and allow actions
harmful to the community if it involves discomfort
to even one person of the minority community
otherwise, they are racists...

The answer to your question lies in the parts of the post you deigned not to respond to.

Twaddle!

You choose not to answer, that's fair enough. But the answer you've chosen to give is twaddle.

My question is a perfectly reasonable on for someone who has no first hand experience of policing and crime in your country.

It's not reasonable, your question is loaded with ignorance.

The news has broadcast many segments where police have left their jobs en masse as well as individually, yet you seem to have missed ALL OF THEM.

Here's the questions you SHOULD HAVE asked yourself: IF the cops are as you seem to think they are, why did they "surround" the area and then do nothing when they knew a crime was being committed? Shouldn't they have rushed in just so an amateur iPhone wielder could video them taking out the suspect in spectacular international newsworthy US policing style?

It seems to me that when you make the police your enemy then you become their enemy and enemies don't treat each other with dignity and respect.

You're a moron.

Of course I have missed news stories, you bloody Muppet! How many good news stories have you seen on UK policing this year?
