Right before shaving I put on a little conditioner to soften it up. Then immediatly after put a little more on, and don't rinse it off until right before you get out. If you still need more then put on a little moisturizer after your shower. I use extra moisturizing conditioner so I buy a special bottle just for that. It's the best thing I've found.
And if the bumps are getting bad (after a few weeks of daily shaving) I let up on going against the grain for about week and do it with the grain until there gone so I can shave smooth again.
