Myself and the delightful Mrs Britwitch are hereby inviting fellow buffs to take part in a SRP based on the charachters from Cornwell's stories of the gallant Richard Sharpe.

The thread is set before the surrender of France and will go on until after Waterloo. We're now looking for players to take on the *very demanding* roles of

Ms Kate Savage and Colonel de Chasseurs Justine de Villiers (My charachters)

MS Susannah Smythe, (Britwitch)

Major Richard Sharpe - Steiner

Dr. Owen Llewellyn - Magbeam

Captain Alfonso de Avellanos y Marca - Katamari Roller


We are also looking for someone to play the devillish villain, male or female.

Given my family connections with the Royal Greenjackets, I almost have to take a shot at this. Can write either Sharpe or Harper, I believe. (Although the pseudo Irish accent might cause a few winces)

Familiar with Skirmish line tactics in the peninsular war if that helps.

(And on a personal note I may add that I'm quite happy to write with you in yet another thread :) )
 
Ahhh, such confidence. I'm glad to have an opportunity to prove it's not misplaced, I hope.

And a ooc bio of my charachter as well

Katherine "Kate" Savage.

The daughter of an English wine merchant in Portugal. Having led a protected life up until the French invasion in 1809. Had a sordid affair with the traitor James Christopher, and subsequently saved by the gallantry of Mister Sharpe.

She's been living in Portugal ever since, running her father's business and never been able to forget the scarred officer of the 95:th Rifles.

24 years old, fair complexion, stands 5'7, slender build, dark almost black hair.

Susannah Smythe

20 years old, slightly tanned glow to her skin, long auburn hair usually worn pinned up, with green eyes she stands a little shorter than her mistress at 5'4''.

Susannah has been working as a ladies maid to Miss Savage for a little over a year. Has heard her mistress speak of the mysterious Mr Sharpe on occasion but has yet to meet him or his fellowes.

Having grown up with only older brothers back in England, she knows how to handle herself and feels certain she could defend her mistress if necessary. Although she is bold and sometimes forgets to watch her tongue when in the company of Miss Savage's associates and friends, she is loyal and bright spirited, with an almost constant smile upon her face.

Secretly she longs to be swept off her feet by a romantic man, but in her eyes such things are restricted to the pages of novels and the lives of the young women she and others like her serve. As a maid she sees little chance of any such thing happening to her. But she can dream...
 
I am more or less confident that I could roleplay a male or a female character. But, just how much do I need to know about the Sharpe series? I have never had the opportunity to watch it.

(Probably, the closest thing I've ever had to the setting was watching the Count of Monte Cristo movie, and its Japanese animation re-telling "Gankutsuou", which seems to have a very appropriate aura to it even if the setting is sci-fi)



As a side-note, I am Spanish. Perhaps I could add some flavour to your SRP if I look in two or three books around.

A female Spanish partisan, aiding the British? There's one such charachter in the books called Commendante Teresa Moreno. She was married to Sharpe but met an untimely demise.

You're welcome to join in as such, I think it would add to the thread.

Dear Lady Mornington

Your answer gives me hope in which, sadly, I cannot indulge. My knowledge of Comandante Teresa Moreno is null, and even as I search for information of her persona, I bear little confidence in my ability to find it.

Perhaps I should create a different character, yet, I shall not give up such an interesting example of my people without having scoured the Internet for a clue of her involvement in Sharpe's life. If you give me permission, I could create a new character just for this role play.

However, I deduce from your words that this role play will take place from 1808, year of our Lord, onwards. Are such suspicions well founded?

The thread would be placed somewhat later in time, rather 1813-15.

As far as a Spanish charachter I'd say that her profession is up to you to decide.Commendante Moreno was merely an example of such a person. I presume that you would want to take on the role as one of His Catholic Majesty's loyal subjects rather than one of the Anfrancesadas.

Dear Lady M,

If taking part in this adventure allows me to improve my mannerisms in the English language, and also lets me enjoy the company of such interesting characters, then what character I create is the least of my worries. With a bit of inspiration, I can prove my worth in any kind of role play.

From maids to countesses, from the meekly to the courageous, no person is safe from being portrayed by my ingenuity. And a skilled fighter, or a delicate afrancesada, I do not believe them to be out of my wit's range.

A little information on my character, for those new to the series.

Major Richard Sharpe was born in London, the son of a ghetto whore. After an early life of thieving and assault he was sentenced to join the army as a Private, Sharpe found that soldiering was in his blood, and quickly took to the work - proving himself a capable and brave soldier. One such feat of bravery saw him save the life of his commander, Arthur Wellesley. That act of bravery and his becoming literate was sufficient for him to be promoted up from the ranks to Lieutenant.

His early commisioned career, however, was not so bright. Not accepted by his peers due to his low birth, and not accepted by the men as being nothing but a jumped up sergeant, he was assigned to the role of Quartermaster, where his battlefield experience was wasted. He was cut off from the main body of the army during Sir John Moore's retreat in Spain, and fought for a time with the remnants of the Spanish army. Upon rejoining the British Army he was discovered by the new Commander in Europe, Arthur Wellesley who remembered his earlier bravery and appointed him to the Light Company of the South Essex Regiment where he fought in many of the major actions across Portugal and Spain, securing the rank of Captain and the command of the Light Company along the way.

At the time of our thread, he has been promoted to Brigade Major, the fighting has shifted to France itself and Sharpe is set to fight in the Battle of Toulouse.

Sharpe is chiefly known for his no-nonsense approach to soldiering, his aggression and the scarring on his face, which makes him appear even more forbidding. He is also known for his resistance to riding a horse in battle, carrying the huge heavy pattern cavalry saber rather than the lighter sword usually used by Infantry officers and carrying a rifle into battle, which officers usually don't do.

Sharpe can be gallant and friendly to those he likes, but his manner is more likely to be harsh and uncultured to strangers, and he often feels uncomfortable in high society - despite his looted wealth.

Dear Lady Mornington,

After reading Steiner's intentions regarding the setting of the story, I have cleared all doubts from my mind, and decided on a male character. A young, idealistic, naive commander of a Spanish cavalry escuadra. I hope this sits well with the intent of the role play.

How very quaint, and dashing I might add. Dragoons and hussars have a certain air to them.

Alfonso de Avellanos y Marca

21 years old, slightly tanned and with dark brown hair down to his neck, Alfonso has the dashing, attractive look of a young officer in uniform, with the soft features of Spanish aristocracy and blue eyes. Standing proudly at 5'6", his boyish looks and idealistic attitude hide a determined young man willing to fight and die for his fatherland and his King.

Alfonso belongs to the María Luisa Hussars, a proud Light Cavalry unit, as commander of a squadron (captain). As most Light Hussar units, they specialize in scouting, with charging being a tactic to break enemy formations with flank attacks in battle. Alfonso's own initiative and, at times, recklessness suit him perfectly for such a career, and the men under his command are confident in his leadership. The María Luisa Hussars ride in battle with a light green jacket and trousers, black boots and fur high hat, and a red shirt. The ornaments in the form of belts and fine sewing are white.

Although Alfonso feels free and is easy-going in the company of other men, he becomes shy and very polite in the presence of ladies. Remarkably so, for a Spaniard. No lady has caught his heart yet, and Alfonso actually has a hidden fear that falling in love will somehow impair him in battle. He prides himself in his bravery and skill as a rider, leading from the front and accumulating honors, but perhaps if he had a reason to run... Alfonso prefers to ignore women, not out of chauvinism, but out of fear of becoming tied while his country needs him.


Like most Spaniards from the old centuries, Alfonso is a believer, very proud of his heritage and country, and somewhat reckless (but ingenious). He was born to a family of merchants, and received education mostly in languages and accounting that helped him secure his position, one that he specifically pursued. Despite Don Quixote's tales, Alfonso believes in chivalry as a way of life, and will not tolerate injustice and abuse in his own unit. And, if he can help it, in any other.

My name is Patrick Harper with the good grace to be born in Donegal I'm a good man so I am.
I'm also a big barrelled chested man so you won't want to be messing with me or the men or Sharpe.

Now just because I'm Irish don't you start thinking I'm a big poor fool , I have my share of jewels from that French Baggage Train we waylaid in Vitoria, and tucked away nicely they are so I can use them when I need them.

I also have a passion for birdwatching but if you have anything to say about that you can say it to my seven barrelled Nock gun that Mr Sharpe gave me as a present, its a nasty beastie and will stop any laughter that may befall me , if you are dim witted enough to make fun of my favourite past-time. It's also handy for clearing groups of Frenchmen out of the way.

Now I started as a rifleman in the English army but with good fortune mostly found since my friendship with Mr Sharpe I have risen in the ranks and have my stripes.

My time with Mr Sharpe has been mostly with the blessing of grand luck but even luck has a nasty side to it for I fell foul of that nasty little weasel Hakeswill and got myself flogged for the trouble.

Still life in the 95th Rifle Regiment continues to surprise , no doubt due to Mr Sharpe, friend, fellow soldier, commander and the source of much woe and joy to behold.

Would you rather be in Shorecliffe, polishing buttons, or here seeing the beautiful countryside, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the fine army cooking?

Well, I'm glad that you like Alfonso! I think he is a fine example of a few Spanish qualities... but I guess elaboration will take place within the RP.


(Incidentally, I was going to make him blond at first... but I thought that, even if German people had been living in Spain for some time, making a German-Spanish defeated the purpose of creating a Spanish character.)
