Radio station here has a big debate this morning about this movie with fat people calling in to talk about it.

I haven't seen it, only the commercials. Based on those alone I wouldn't go see the movie. Why torture myself? That's what the radio callers are saying, too. The movie has a 5 minute speech about seeing the inner beauty of fat people, and then the other 95% of it is one big fat joke.

Society accepts fat jokes as being funny, and I can live with that. People are human, and that means they are sometimes cruel. I can't change that. But I certainly am not going to pay money to see this movie. I predict theaters full of skinny and mildly overweight people only. Those of you who do go see Shallow Hal, please check out your fellow movie goers to see if I guess correctly.

Paltrow wore a fat suit.
DeNiro would have gained the weight.

That's why Bobby's the best.

In this case, it wouldn' t have worked to gain hundreds of pounds for the role. Forget that you'd have to be an idiot to do that on purpose. Paltrow plays both parts- skinny AND fat. She could put on a fat suit for that portion of the role. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a skinny suit for the part where she plays a "normal" size woman.

Paltrow as a "normal" sized woman? HA! She'd have to gain 50 pounds first!

I just saw a 30 minute show promoting it (I think on A&E) and it looked to be funny, but not that funny. It seemed more balanced than just 5/95, but who knows. It wasn't good enough for me to go see.

I don't think Paltrow is that good looking anyway; I think there are quite a number of women on this board that have prettier faces - and a number that have bodies as good or better. She is a little skinny for my tastes, but okay.

Shallow Hal - Morals in American society..

Greetings..

I have to say.. I would for sure go and see this movie.. Not because Gwenyth Paltrow's a fox or because Jack Black is fucking hilarious.. Rather because the movie preaches something that I've been following for years - to appreciate the inner beauty.. We've all heard it before - looks aren't everything.. Damned straight.. Looks are a bonus.. What counts are the personality and character of the person.. This absolutely knock out of a girl might hit on me, and sure I might flirt back.. But if there's something about her inner make-up that sets of the Klaxon horns and red warning lights in my head, then forget it..

LOL Couldn't agree more. Well, maybe change it to 55 pounds, but still.....

The movie defeats its own message: it portrays inner beauty through an exceptionally thin version of exterior beauty, reinforcing the idea that thin is the only standard of true beauty. I know they needed a visual of inner beauty, but the chosen dichotomy fails to send any message other than beauty = thin. I'd say the movie gets kudos for at least trying, but it falls far short. Reminds me of Cats and Dogs, where Jeannine Garfallo played the "ugly" woman. Uh huh.

Nope.

Won't go see it.

Both, because fat jokes aren't funny, and because I'm a broke University Student.

You know, now that I think about it, there is one thing I'm interested in. At the end of the movie, when/if Paltrow and Black end up together, I'm wondering how they'll be showing her. Will Black still have the "gift" to see her as a thin looking woman, or will he then see her for the way she really looks, physically? At the end, I would be a bit impressed if they showed Paltrows character as being overweight instead of the thin woman he at first thinks she is.

Nah.

If I'm headed to the movie theater, I'd just as soon see something else.:)

Paltrow was alright in "Shakespeare in Love", but I've never seen her do top-notch acting anyways.

The commercials didn't even seem that funny to me.

You never know, though. Might be forced into it someday.;)
