Shall we dance?

I sing routinely. My family routinely bursts into what we call 'random bursts of singing'. It can be very alarming to people who aren't used to it, cause all it takes is someone saying something that reminds someone of a song and that person will start singing it and everyone else will stop mid sentence to sing along (assuming they know the lyrics) and then when it's done take up the conversation like the singing never happened.

We do this!! I'm constantly singing. Ours usually ends up in hysterical laughing though because I always forget the lyrics and make up my own.

Dancing and singing is a way of showing up. At least for me it is. Some people are very spontaneous, they just do it. I admire them for that. I can't do that tho.

I might sing on public sometimes, when I must. You could never see me dance tho. In the 16 years I was with my ex I never felt that he like the way I dance, so I just stoped doing it for good, on public. I dance when I am alone, but theres no way you could make me dance infront of you. Just think about it makes me feel so shit, so small. No way I would do it. If you ask me for a dance, I would most likely just start crying.

Some slow body on body dance maybe, with my A., but thats it.

This makes me sad. Sorry to hear your ex made you feel so self-conscious. Singing and dancing are such joyful and natural forms of human expression. Who cares what you look or sound like? I bet you look just beautiful when you dance, I'm sure your A would say the same.

You're sure you'll never try again?

I used to enjoy parties where my theatre friends would gather around the piano and I would join in singing, mainly show tunes. I have enjoyed sing-a-longs and will sometimes sing in the car when I'm alone behind the wheel.

I enjoy a variety of dance including couple ballroom dances as well as many different folk dances, largely from Eastern Europe. I've been told that I'm a great swinger :) - on the dance floor.

However, I'm not one to just start dancing for no reason at all.

I burst out into song more than those crappy actors in High School Musical, but without the cheesy lyrics and with songs people actually like hearing. I'm a fan of oldies, so The Beatles,The Who, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, The Commodores, Ray Charles, (to name a few) and anything like that just flows right out.

My all time favorite place, hands down, to burst into song is the shower. I sing old Rat Pack songs, like Dean Martin's "Ain't That a Kick In the Head" and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to The Moon" when I'm washing up. I've sung in the shower since I could remember.

I can memorize a song after hearing it just a few times, and so I know the songs from numerous musicals and disney movies. I also very rarely forget a song, so once I've learned it it's learned. I sing songs that were taught to me in Kindergarten. K says I'm the queen of stupid songs. Every time he think's he's heard them all, I remember another one. lol
I'm the same wa. Lyrics just sorta stick.

And for dancing, I love to do it. I even choreographed a tango piece (had to direct 22 people) for my school. Not to mention bachata and dancing at clubs. There isn't much encouragement for boys/men to be students of dance, but they are encouraged to have rhythm. I feel as though movies like "Stomp the Yard" and "Step Up" where there are large populations of male dancers are insight into the types of dance that are accepted as "manly" in Western Culture.

LOL. You sound like a lot of fun, DD! Your shower songs are two of my faves. I have a CD called "Ultra Lounge: Vegas Baby!" that has a whole whack of those tunes on it. You should hear Judy and I belting out "Sunny Side of the Street".

Dancing can be very masculine. The traditional dances on this island, quite obviously, highlight what would have been necessary skills long ago - strong paddling, throwing spears, good balance, endurance, etc. But even with these kinds of moves the men have an undeniable grace. And the women...oh my...I took Polynesian dancing for many years and I could only dream of shaking my booty like these island babes can.

Speaking of dance movies, I thought "Billy Elliot" did a wonderful job with the whole "boy who loves to dance" scenario. Ballet is a tough, tough art; those men are phenomenally strong.

I believe you, no worries, LOL. (I have all kinds of outrageous friend stories that I'm sure make people think I suffer from delusions of grandeur).

That's very, very cool. I haven't seen live theater in ages; I really enjoy it.

I'll never forget seeing Yule Brenner (yeah, you'll have to look him up, lol) on stage in The King and I, when I was about eleven. He was MAN x 1000. What a talent!

Do you sing?

Yes!

Do you dance?

Yes!

Where, when and under what circumstances?

For fun, professionally and anywhere, even in the car!

And if not, why not?

I can't imagine why one wouldn't.

You know come to think of it in signing is actual very traditional in Germany. Its not an individual thing, its all synchronised singing. You can find spontaneous breakouts of songs at soccer games, bars, beerhalls, birthdays, and more.

The more being train stations, streets, rooftops, that sort of thing after all of the other events listed above. Drinking songs really are their favorites, though and if you actually drink when you're supposed to throughout all the songs, you'll be smashed very, very quickly.

It's kind of amusing in an otherwise fairly stoic society.

You mean, aside from the fact that it can put small children into hysterical comas and causes animals to stampede? I recognize my responsibilities to society, and restraint with my vocal chords is one of them.

And as for dancing, the last time I tried dancing with a partner the CSI had to come out to figure out what happened to her.

You and I were born with the same singing gifts, my friend.

As to dance, I love to dance and consider it as an indicator I'm alive.
Dance with a partner, Yes!
Dance around the house when alone, Yes!
Dance naked under a full noon, Yes!

So, shall we dance?

THis thread for some odd reason makes me think of the beginning of an Enrique Iglesias song ("Hero").... "Would you dance if I asked you to dance?"

It makes me think of Yule Brenner, as Keroin previously mentioned, in The King and I. I think that song and scene in general is my favorite in the entire production.

I sing. Not all that well, but with some moderate ability. My advantage, if you can call it that, is the mutability of my voice. I can sing a rather broad range, and all sorts of accents and voices.

The problem is that I have no "voice" of my own. I am always aping some other voice when singing. I have no idea what my actual "voice" should sound like.

Dance? Not so much. I'm one of those too-self-conscious types. I do NOT have a body for dancing, andthe feets have no rhythm beyond keeping time. I could probably be a drummer in that sense, but dancing seems beyond me.

I danced a little bit with youngest daughter at a wedding reception yesterday. she's four, amd cute as the dickens, so nobody was going to be looking at me. She LOVESLOVESLOVES to dance. As soon as the dance floor opened, she was on it. Stayed on it almost the entire time until we left, and got tears in her eyes and looked forlorn when I said we had to leave. She wanted to stay and close down that dance floor.

The best part was when we were leaving. She was in the backseat, and announced proudly, "I danced with a kid. A BOY kid!"

(I honestly feel like I'm failing because I don't dance. It brings MIS so much pleasure and I feel like such a schmuck because I don't do it...)

Having seen a video of his performance, I can totally understand why he won. The kid is awesome.

I can't sing or dance to save my life, but I always want to do both when I'm drunk. No sense of rhythm whatsoever, and I'm probably tone-deaf to boot. I pity the people around me.

Well that must explain it. I'm 3/4 german. :p

Not sure if I can ever get rid of this odd feeling, time will show.

I am weird I know. lol

Loved weddings as a kid. I put up with all the boring junk just to get to the dancing. My Uncle Doug was my eternal partner, bless his patience. He and his wife taught ballroom dancing.

I've always thought the coolest present a man could give his SO would be to secretly take dance lessons and then surprise her on the dance floor one evening. Not that I'm hinting...or anything...really...

Honestly, H, I'm sure MIS doesn't give a rat's ass that you aren't John Travolta and I'm sure she can find plenty of partners at weddings and such. The great thing about being a girl is people don't think you're weird when you dance with other girls. If my partner du jour doesn't dance, I can just ring up a friend and hit the town when the urge needs satisfying.

And it does need satisfying lately.

3 months, 1 week, 6 days. Not that I'm counting.

Nope you cant be german unless you have a ability to go from total retard directly to stoic creep, as mentioned by kat. Bonus points for socks with sandals.

Not just any sandals, Birkenstocks!

(they are really good for your feet and posture, though!)

sometimes when i watch movies with the kidlets, we will all dance to the credit music at the end. depending on the movie and choice of credit music i have done ballet, ballroom, jazz, swing, modern, and just plain wiggling around for fun with them. they love when i do flips and lifts with them (modified of course)
