If you mean "legit" as in legal, you'll have to check your local laws for that information.

If you mean "legit" as an acceptable way to satisfy sexual urges, that depends on your comfort level. My general opinion is that if both parties are consenting, it's all good. It's your body. Enjoy it! Take proper precautions (condoms, due diligence in your choice of escort so you don't get ripped off/robbed/dead, etc.). As far as legality is concerned, most of this stuff seems to be borderline cases, in my locality. Its not really a violation of the law.
Also it more about being with someone in the act (and various events leading to it), than the act itself (which seems to a bit boring btw)......
As I said, I am mostly worried about morality of such acts and the impact it would have on possible future long term relations etc.......

None of us can give you advice about moral problems which may arise in your future; your morals are your own, unique to each individual. I have no idea what your situation is that makes you sure that you cannot find at least a congenial one-night stand but I assume that you know your prospects best. It seems curious that you can visualize a future partner but not getting laid.

I would encourage you to think about how you will go from what I assume is a shy mode to the kind of man that will be able to meet and attract that future partner.

I think an escort is going to help or hurt that depending on where you are coming from and I applaud you thinking all that through. It may build your confidence, and it may make you feel less than. Depending only on you.

There were more options in times past, but there are still things one might consider between being alone and hiring an escort. It almost sounds like you would prefer more of a courtesan. Someone that will act the role of a girlfriend without the fear of complications and rejection. This can but doesn't have to involve sex. I think it sounds like cold, detached, clinical sex, which some might enjoy will not be fulfilling for you.

The anachronistic reality of dry counties always fascinated me. It really is how the country is supposed to work. Don't like guns, liquor or prostitution? Feel free to exclude it from your area, but don't presume to tell the next county over how they should live.

Basically all is a zoning issue. On the one hand, no one likes to be told what to do with their property, but on the other, if you know before you buy a property what the deed restrictions are and what sort of neighbors that will likely yield it is a lot easier for people to get along.

Kind of using the law to set boundaries in a "good fences make good neighbors" sort of way.
