My mom gained 12 pounds when she was pregnant with me. I weighed just under 6 pounds.
Pregnant women weren't encouraged to gain that much weight at that time, and my mom was paranoid about what she ate and how much she gained because the was the secretary for the OG/GYN department. I think she felt like she was being watched.

My mom didn't gain much weight with me, either. But not because she was restricting her calories. There were issues with the placenta. I weighed less than 4 lbs at birth, and was in the hospital for two months before they would let me go home (I couldn't maintain my body temperature). Her OB told her that if I had been a boy, I wouldn't have made it. Not sure how he figured that one, but there you have it. I've been blessed to not have had any longer term effects, although I still get cold very, very easily.
