They're incredibly useful, provided you get the right swing. The same goes for athleticism - some models require a certain amount, whereas others are accessible for those who can, say, sit in a chair-level hammock. If you're not in perfect shape, I'd suggest going with a swing that has head-to-leg support, stirrups, and is highly adjustable. The actual hammock styles are less expensive, but not as adjustable, versatile or supportive as, say, those made of heavy duty leather pieces and straps.

I don't know that I'd recommend the swings that are thinner straps and provide minimal support at all.

If suspending the swing (safely, of course) from you ceiling isn't an option and you have sufficient space, you can get a free-standing frame for under $150.

Kids are a great excuse for why there are hooks in your ceiling. Our house came with a few hooks that were used to increase overhead lighting without wiring anything, but we actually DID install additional hooks for therapy swings and a circus tent for our son.

It's a novelty for some, but the better the swing, the more positions you can position the girl in.
