Newbie Question here (and apologies if there is already thread(s) discussing this.

I got actually a thoughtful comment for one of my stories. It said "the sex scenes are almost interchangeable other than the place in which they occur."

This surprised me because it was a multi parts story and Part 1 was oral, part 2 oral + vaginal, Part 3 oral + vaginal + anal + DP. The locations were different.

So here is my question for the expert writers here: How do you avoid writing the same sex scene over and over?

I'd try to not get to insecure about comments. There are so many different people reading our stories, accomodating everyone is impossible. I read through your comments for Part 1 of the story and there were complimentary comments. So people are enjoying the story.

Regarding reaching out to a specific commenter? That's a crap shoot. I've heard some authors have received addition feedback that helped them. Sometimes there is no response at all.

Good morning my dear colleague,
I ran into the very same issue with one or two of my earliest submissions here. I don't think the comment I got was as polite and as helpful as yours though. Still, I took the criticism as "advice" and ran with it.

I changed up the way I wrote the sex scenes and the language I used, tried to vary terms and descriptions more. Resetting these items seems to have worked, I haven't received any more (acidic) comments.

It is a pity that there isn't an X-Rated Thesaurus available to us but try making yourself your own thesaurus that you can use... for example, write the word "Penis" on the left hand side of a page then see how many different words you can come up with, thus interchange in your writing, to describe the same thing (without going to the extremely ridiculous of course)

Yeah, I've had readers comment my sex scenes are too similar. I bet most of us have. There are only so many ways to get it on. Focusing on the build-up to how the characters get there and their feelings during (and after) is key.

Regardless, in my latest (terribly edited) story I came up with something I think is new: a skeptical female character asks the male character to describe what he'd do to her... while they're actually doing it

Use different language, different metaphors, different feelings, different sensories. Try to weave your sex scenes into the plot rather than just pausing the plot to have sex. (not really applicable for a strokesheet).

There is a lot of good advice here. Let me see if I can add a tiny tidbit. As noted here, there are only so many ways to describe the same thing. You can change up the words used to describe the act and change up the connective story line.

I've caught myself doing that, being repetitive, using the same descriptions for a scene multiple times in a story. It can be wearing on a reader. BUT, this also can be a reader's OCD, a thing they see that no one else does. A thing that bothers them but isn't an issue for anyone else.

Before you decide to change a story or your style, I'd reread the sections your reader was talking about and determine if what they say is true. Sometimes what a readers sees is real and their complaint is real. In those cases I pay heed to it and change what I need to. Sometimes though, it's a matter of the Princess and the pea. It may be a tiny thing that irritates them no end, but isn't a huge flaw or sometimes not a flaw at all.

All I'm sayin' is go slow. Make sure you are picking the wheat from the chaff and not the other way around.

As noted here, there are only so many ways to describe the same thing. You can change up the words used to describe the act and change up the connective story line.

Things you can vary in sex scenes in addition to positions:

• The viewpoint character's POV or narrator's focus. Is it on the man in the established couple, the woman, or the unicorn? The older and more experienced character or the ingenue? The character solid in their sexual preferences or the one trying to experiment?
• The mood. Romantic? Exploratory? Casual? Angry?
• Their environment. Is it a candle-lit bed strewn with rose petals or a bar bathroom? In either case, how do the characters feel about it?
• What makes your character(s) unique? Do they or their partner(s) have any particular kink/fetish/preference to focus on? This doesn't need to be as blatant as anything you'd devote a tag or category to, but can be as simple as one guy being a breast man and the next being an ass man or whatever.

It probably wouldn't make sense to change all of those in one series, even if it's very long, but you can play with a lot of them.

Another option is to just skip the sex. This might sound crazy in erotica, but I've got two 10-plus-part series, and they both allude to events that happen between installments that I didn't and probably never will turn into stories. I figured they didn't add to the overall plot and wouldn't be significantly enough different from other stories that would, so I just skipped them. Some readers asked about them and maybe I should have been clearer about what I was doing, but I don't regret the basic idea.

I think you need to be well established and have 1000s of followers to attempt such a move unless you don't mind low reads, low scores and angry comments.
I have thought about cutting the sex scenes to a minimum but I felt it would lead to backlash or worse, becoming invisible.

Erotica IS the buildup. No need for the nitty gritty. That's what people call 'porn'.

I did that quite a bit. Bunch of build up, a paragraph or two, maybe less of the funky chicken, then on to more of the story.
