My very first Poll but I had to know. How does sex affect your storylines? Which would make you happier to read and make you give a better score as you are reding?

Really, Danielle
The sex is incidental. If the story doesn't have a good plot, the characters are flat and wooden and the imagery sucks or is nonexistant, you can fill pages of sex and I won't bother.

Mainly sex, but a little story line too. Not too much, because it might get it in the way, but some. At least describe the circumstances that have led to the people fucking. :nana:

I couldn't vote, really.

Basically I'm with box on this one.

The stories here I've found to be a real turn-on had one thing in common: Believable characters with some kind of tension between them, followed by sex.

Good characters, who I can empathise with, can make an ordinary story really sexually charged

Ronde's stories are some of my favorite here.

Of course, there has to be a history to the (final) sexual encounter, which I suppose involves plotting the story.

In general, though I love well-plotted stories, but that's because I like puzzles and mazes and whodunnits.

None of the above.

Of course that there are only so many ways to describe sex. Having a story based entirely on sex is a pointless exercise that will get old pretty fast. (Even if it would be perfectly possible to write a story entirely comprised of sex scenes, the sex wouldn't be the thing that would make it a story.)

On the other hand, I read a couple of days ago in another thread that someone rated the stories by how well they read without the sex. That is complete bullshit. If your story reads just as well without the sex, do everyone (mostly yourself) a favour and keep the sex out of it. The beauty of fine literature, like poetry, is that there are no wasted words, everything in the story serves a specific purpose. There can be no "incidental" elements.

That's a good point. If the stories read well without the sex, it implies that the sex is gratuitous and should actually be excised.

And the same is true of the non-sex: If that is extraneous, it also needs to go.

I'm also with those who prefer a good story to accompany the sex. Sex is the main attraction of the stories I read here, no question about that, but it always makes things more interesting to have the sex arrived at in a logical, well-plotted, and fun way that fits the themes and characters. I write all my stories with that in mind.

On another note, I also often find that the sex in my stories is easily written and thought out. It's the lead-in and aftermath that gives me challenge. Anyone have this in common with me?

I think the top line of my sig says how I feel on the subject...... :D

I voted for sex and plot.

In fact, good sex can drive the plot. Mark a turning spot in the character's perceptions of each other.

I like lots of sex, so too much plot can slow things down too much, but great dialogue, sympathetic characters and a somewhat believable scenario are all musts.

Any ol' story has a plot, and can contain sex, just as life in general does. I could easly write a story here that I'd rather put in non-erotic than anywherre else, although it had people fucking in it.

A porn story is sex and nothing else. But it's not about anything. (Or a makeshift plot is just there to frame fuck scenes.)

Good erotica has a plot about sex, a theme centering on sexuality. Actually, it doesn't even have to contain any actual grinding of genitals (although it helps), but can be tent-raisingly hot on pure sexual tension and clever innuendo.

Maybe so, but I'm not gonna change my style. :D

Hey, ever said there's anything wrong with porn.

I didn't vote. I'm in the in-between on this one. Basically, while there's nothing wrong with porn, and nothing wrong with sexless stories (erotica or otherwise) my preference for stories containing plot doesn't necessarily apply to Lit. Often, when I click on a new story (or old one for that matter, though most of my Lit. reads are from the "new" list) I don't expect much plot, eventhough I hope deep down to stumble across some.

I was torn on which choice was best, for that reason.

Story and plot are everything.

Yes, they are. Sure, sex is nice, but if the story's good I'm hooked. :)

I've already casted my vote, but I wish I had known beforehand whether the Sex or No Sex issue was for stories that we like to read or those that we prefer to write. I love reading sex almost as much as I love writing it, but I always need to have a story. Smut's good, but I don't take it nearly as seriously.

Some of the sex stories here remind me of beaver photos, which don't turn me on at all. For a good jerk-off picture, I need to see the face, expression, and also the location, in order to be able to construct my little wank-fantasy properly.

Voted "A Good Mix"

As the subject says I voted "A Good Mix" though that's mostly because what I feel like reading varies depending on my mood...sometimes I'm in the mood for some good ol' fasion 'porn' and sometimes just a good story...

depends on my mood...

a good story is of course what i like to read, something that makes me want to read on, something that makes me think, etc. and those don't need to have sex, sometimes blending out the story just before the sex is more erotic anyway because it leaves things to imagination...

but there are times when i am just in the mood to read something short with little disturbing plot and a lot of sex...

and there are of course times where i want something in between these two options.

with my own writing though... i do usually get distracted by other things, and sometimes have difficulties even writing sex scenes into my stories...

Oh come on, give me a little plot just like a good porn movie a story can help but shit the only reason why any one reads these things is b/c of the sex.
