If sex were as easy as McDonald's french fries - would you often partake?

I think I'd have sex more often than I go to McDonald's. Buthey, that's just me.

I tend to look at our desire to have sex from an evolutionary perspective - sexual pleasure exists to entice us to have sex (and thus to propagate our genes). We don't need to postulate an idea that the forbiddenness of sex is what makes us want to do it. It's a hard-wired biological imperative that's subject to a certain amount of modification by individual experience and cultural , but I can't imagine we'd have any less sex if all cultural taboos ceased to exist. Although sexual taboos may make sex seem more exciting, I don't think they increase the amount of sex we have on average. Look at Victorian England, a society with one of the most prohibitive sets of sexual taboos in history. There was definitely a lot more nookie going on than the Victorians let on, but in general, taboos stifled people's sex lives.

Conversely, when the sexual revolution occurred in the 60's and 70's, breaking down these Victorian values and making extramarital and premarital sex more acceptable, the amount of sex and the average number of partners individuals had in their lifetimes skyrocketed. If you extrapolate those sexual freedoms even further, I'd predict people would be having even more sex.

It's a lot more complicated than that because I think taboos themselves serve an evolutionary purpose stemming from the differing reproductive strategies of men and women, so although taboos may lessen, I can't imagine that women will ever stop being the more sexually discriminating of the sexes. But that's another post.
