Sex & Gender

What would you do if you had to teach a class on this subject? How would you structure the class? What topics would you address? What methods would you use?

From the perspective of a student, I think I'd first want a historical sketch of the issue, and then focus on some current readings on the matter, followed by frank discussion. Not knowing any of the relevant literature, or the context of your course (Anthropology? Sociology? Psychology?) - I think it may affect how you look at the issue.

If its a multidisciplinary course, I would try to draw from different perspectives on the issue of sex and gender. I find the anthropological issues in sex, procreation, and gender fascinating. I took a whole course in Human Growth and Development through the anthropology department, and the issues they raise are so different from the traditional psychological perspectives.

Just my two cents :)

edited because I didn't read my post over before I hit submit!

I actually wrote this thread because I'm taking a Sociology class titled Sex and Gender.

The material the Instructor is using is often 30-40yrs old, and she is trying to apply those studies to the modern social environment.

Her selections in feminism are right on target, but she brings to the lecture and OBVIOUS anti-feminist bias, and slants the readings unrelated to feminist theory against feminism.

The idea of a masculinity as a social construct is mentioned-but not discussed in depth, and while I whole heartedly believe in the teachings of the experience of minorities in a gendered society, I don't believe that the "minority" experience is exclusive of a "woman's" or "man's" experience, but that one contributes to the other, and vice versa.

Basically, my Instructor is an idiot, and I'm trying to create a curriculum for the class. I'm taking her syllabus and changing the readings, and re-doing some of the lectures so that the class matches the course description and is worthwhile for any student that has to take it...

CB-
It always sucks when professors seem stuck in the past. I certainly appreciate the seminal research on a topic, but when there are 30-40 years of social change to make up for, you would think that some relevant literature could at least be culled from say, the last 5 to 10 years??!?!

Are you taking it upon yourself to restructure the course? I guess I'm a little confused there......

I was talking with a department head about it (if he shows up here, I will be mortified) and he suggested that I take my suggestions to the Director of Soc. I want something concrete to take her. In all honesty take a sex and gender class in which the instructor berates a specific group of people without bothering to research-is a gigantic waste of my time. She's done it to more than just feminists.

She's a crack whore, and I'm about to dump on the DEPT exactly how badly they fucked up.

NICE!

The only way the departments know how crappy their teachers are is if the students let them know...... one of my friends that is in college is in the same process with his Spanish professor...

more power to ya!
