I have two concepts that are so similar that I’m thinking I should pick just one and write it, though if both sound promising, I could do that too. Which of these sounds more interesting to you?

Story Idea #1: The Maiden and The Empress

A story set in a fantasy world where a small amount of energy is generated at orgasm, and passed into the body of a person’s sexual partner. This phenomenon is virtually unknown except to the people of a thriving, growing empire. The immortal empress has created a system whereby the people must pay tribute in the form of this energy, generated from orgasm during sex, and extracted by the empress’ harem, a caste of men and women who take the energy from the people, then couple in ritualized competitive sex, concentrating the energy down to a single person. That person gives the energy to the empress, who uses it to influence her people to remain happy, peaceful, and productive. The empress’ authority is not without challenge though, as a scheming noble class has found ways of resisting her power and is slowly asserting their own ambitions for the empire, which includes the creation of weapons that use the empress’ power.

The arrival of an imprisoned warrior from a distant land further threatens the balance of power. In his culture, a virginal maiden offered herself in sacrifice centuries prior to a pillaging host set to overrun the land of her tribe. For her selfless act, her god turned back the invading horde, and she ascended to heaven, soon becoming regarded as close to a diety herself in the history of her people. The woman’s likeness is known to all of his people, and her similarity to the empress is so striking that the young warrior finds himself driven to discover the truth about the maiden and the empress, even if it means joining the ranks of the the empress’ harem and working his way up to the empress herself
.

Story Idea #2: Foundling

Audrey is an orphaned young woman in modern day Los Angeles who has never felt at home, even in her own skin. Though possessed of almost ethereal beauty, there is some undefinable quality about her that has always filled others with dread and hatred. Growing up, she bounced from one foster home to the next, never finding acceptance. As a teenager, she turned to alcohol, then harder drugs, to cope with the pain of abuse and loneliness.

A chance encounter with a stranger, whose touch cures her of what should have been a fatal overdose, leads Audrey to seek him out, and she discovers the reason that she has always been an outcast. She is one of an immortal race of beings that appear to be human, but who possess powers that can only be described as magic. They were once charged to be guardians of humanity, a bastion against evil, but a curse has robbed them of the ability to reproduce. She is the first of her kind to be born in hundreds of years.

At first ecstatic to find a home among these beings, Audrey begins to explore her powers, which includes masking her true nature from humans, and discovers that the unceasing hunger which drove her to addiction is actually the lust for the power that she can only gain from sex. She soon discovers the cost of feeding that power, though, as the demonic beings that have hunted her people nearly to extinction begin to come after her, and they seem to have taken a special interest in her.

Let me know if you like either of these and would like to see them in a long-form story. I’m written some of both, but I’m still developing them in my head, so they might not make it to publication for some time.

Wow. Simply wow! Such vision and depth of imagination.

I wouldn’t touch either one, for fear of ruining it. I do very much look forward to seeing yours however. Patience produces wonderful things.

Thanks. If I end up writing the first one, I hope I can do it justice. It’s definitely the more epic story.

Yes as synopsis these read well and either could work and I don't think they're so similar that writing one would preclude the other.

I beg to differ - both good ideas, could be developed to ne two expressions of tales from a magical world.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I’ll focus on writing The Maiden and the Empress and see where it takes me.

I love the plot hooks (aka, 'plot bunnies') you've shown here in both tales. They're both rich and quite possibly grand skeletons for tales to be told about. The orgasm-donation sex bit is a trope used in some segments in modern and historical RL (as much as any magic/magick is) as well as more than a few fantasy series. The all-or-nothing transfer of the power is one way to consider, another would be based on the profundity of the orgasm, among many many others. You could work in yin/yang oriental style magics easily as well, if you chose - or not, it'd certainly not be a requirement.

The second one sounds a lot like a variant on a 'holy succubus' type tale, where the pseudo-succubi (plural of succubus) aren't inherently evil, but over time have been considered evil for 'reasons'. I'd encourage you to consider the backstory - why, in the setting, are these defenders considered evil now? I'd also suggest you consider what other beasties you'll be discussing - everything from chaotic hordes with wildly disparate abilities to specific critters drawn from fiction, myth, and/or imagination. I will caution that it is *VERY FRIGGIN EASY* to get too many moving parts into a tale, as I've learned to my own dismay! Then again, as long as you maintain internal consistency ("The red horned ones are fire wielders, except for Burnn, who's an ice wielding one who dyed his blue horns red..." kinda thing)

I look forward to reading what you put out! :)

The magic-system and world-building in #1 are pretty interdependent. I think I’ve got a somewhat novel take on the trope, with a lot of interesting details on how it works and its limitations. As of right now, I’m 6200 words in.

Here, it’s more like humans sense something is off about them without knowing why, kind of tripping their danger sense. But most humans have no idea that this stuff exists.

Yep, need to work more on the world-building for this one. I tend toward discovery-writing, so might have to start writing it before I have a better grasp on what it all means.

modern day voyeur/voyeuse take: Orgasms generate magic, but only those not in physical contact with the orgasming person gather the juice, and the fewer non-participants involved the greater the gains. However it requires observer to be fairly close, say within 5 meters, and physical objects greatly reduce or even preclude the gathering.

So - once someone figures this out, how do they start generating magic? How do they keep regaining it? Perhaps the magic allows for illusion, so they can intrude on intimate scenarios and not be perceived? If so, how do they keep finding the needed nitty-gritty? Do they train people to have better orgasms so they can get bigger loads?

If someone stumbles over this, they likely aren't the first to have done so - voyeurism has been known of for a loooong time, after all. So what came before? What will these forecomers do to maintain their position? How many of them are there, and where? What industry/industries are they mostly embedded in? Porn? Prostitution? Violent crime? Therapy? Prisons?

All puns intended, 'course.

This line of thought is a good way to tie into a larger narrative. Just because someone discovers that they have a special ability, doesn't mean that it's unique to them, and that someone else hasn't already figured out how to take advantage of it.

You wouldn't necessarily need to delve deeply into the larger world, but it can be hinted at and the MC can come across others in their adventures.

Yeah, this could well be the initial beginnings of a lot of different things, to include but not limited to global catastrophies, worldwide awakenings to magic, discovery of subversion in plain sight, saintly benevolence, demonic malevolence, and many many others. Given the idea that someone stumbles onto this periodically, there'll likely be plots/plans/etc laid and perfected over time to detect, guide, and/or prevent the next iteration of the stumble. So assuming that these orgasm-mages are rare, it'd seem to me likely the new stumbler could learn quite a bit through trial and error before they run into the ancient hidden masters, ass-u-me'ing they're there.

There are plenty of ways to make this less likely - add conditions to the conditions where orgasms become magic until it seems unlikely to have been discovered before. Making worldwide conspiracy or conspiracies to hide orgasm-magic from perception requires either the initial discovery early in human history, or an existing mundane power finding (and believing!) the odd behaviors needed to gain magic.

This post's content is easily reusable across most any form of magic I can recall offhand, too - I'm just focusing on orgasm to magic due to my highjacking FelHarper's post here. :) Sorry 'bout that, Fel, I'll stop for now.
