So, being that only one of the old Seven Wonders is left standing (the Pyramids), this guy started taking votes on what might be the new Seven Wonders of the World. Here's the list of 21 finalists he complied.

What would you be your choice of the new Seven Wonders of the World? Either from those on this list, or from your own list? Any of these things you feel shouldn't be on the list?

1) Taj Mahal, Agra, India
2) Acropolis, Athens
3) The Great Wall, Beijing
4) Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu), Cairo
5) Chichen Itza, Chichen Itza
6) Easter Island
7) Neuschwanstein Castle, Fussen
8) The Alhambra, Granada, Spain
9) Hagia Sophia, Istanbul
10) Kiyomizudera, Kyoto
11)Machu Picchu, Machu Picchu
12) The Kremlin, Moscow
13) The Statue of Liberty, New York City
14) Eiffel Tower, Paris
15) Petra, Petra
16) Corcovado, Rio De Janeiro
17) Colosseum, Rome
18) Stonehenge, Salisbury
19) Angkor Wat, Siem Riep
20) Opera House, Sydney
21) Timbuktu, Timbuktu

I'd nominate the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as that's truly spectacular. Beautiful sight, IMHO.

Also, I could name several things in London, like Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, the London Eye.

Trying to name the Seven Wonders

The Colossus of Rhodes
The Temple of Artemis
The Great Library
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Pyramids
The Great Lighthouse
And...

Ugh, that's gonna annoy me.

The Earl

The Colossus of Rhodes is the other one, Earl.

I'll nominate Easter Island. Not because of the statues. But because of its fate and the lesson we should learn from it.

The people there overwhelmed the ecology, their society collapsed and conflict became an endemic condition. They ended up being ruled by the tangata rima toto, 'The men with bloodied hands'.

Sad.

That was one of the six I already had.

Sorry for the 'jack 3113, but it's annoying me that I can't figure it out.

D'oh!

Note to self: No posting just after you've gotten up from a nap.

Since I'm not awake I looked at Wikipedia. Maybe that can jog your mind, Earl.

You must have been watching Good Morning America when they profiled the 7 New Wonders of the World. I thought the choices were ... interesting.

For those who didn't see it, here's the list:

1) Potala Palace - Tibet
2) Jerusalem
3) Polar Ice Caps (beautiful, sure, but I'm not sure they qualify as a "wonder")
4) Hawaiin Islands Monument
5) The Internet
6) The Mayan Pyramids
7) The Great Migration - Africa

They also had a poll for people to choose an 8th "wonder," and the Grand Canyon was chosen.

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus.

I've been trying to enforce a similar rule on myself for years now. I just can't stop posting when I'm too tired though :p

They're rubbish choices, IMHO. A wonder is a building built by man that defies expectation. Jerusalem, Polar Ice Caps, the Internet and the Great Migration don't qualify.

The Terracotta Army and the Mausoleum of Qin are pretty impressive. Then there's the Hoover Dam, Panama Canal, and Kansai International Airport - all pretty amazing feats of modern-engineering. They don't quite capture the imagination in the same way as the original Wonders, though.

Nor does the Grand Canyon. And I agree. But what can one expect from "Good Morning America"? It's sort of "News Lite"...come to think of it, most news in the U.S. is like that. And I'm so not surprised that Americans would consider the Grand Canyon a "Wonder" with not one of them objecting that it can't be if such "wonders," by definition, are suppose to be man-made.

Wah! :( I wanna belong to a smart country....

I think humanity could do with a good deal less hubris, and start taking its head out of its arse. So I vote for The Mediterranean Sea.

Dude. The Pacific has it all over the Mediterranean.

Hmmm... I have a few suggestions -

The Statue of Millard Filmore outside City Hall in Buffalo, New York. (It seems so appropriate)

The Bent Pyramid of Snefru because it shows the best laid plans typically go to hell.

The City of Timbuktu. Not really because it's a great city, but because of the joke - "My friend Tim and I met these three lovely, naked girls. We thought about what to do since there was only the two of us. So finally, I fucked one and Tim Bucked Two :p :p :p

de Courcy Castle in Carrickfergus (built 1180). (I have no other comment)

I it sad that this is the first time I have ever heard that joke?

I have also never heard the full "Man from Nantucket" limeric. Does that make me a wonder of the world (wondering how I make it through the world so ignorantly ;) )?

Total threadjack - sorry.

I had never heard the full limerick, either, until last July. It was so naughty I had to memorize it immediately!

There once was a man from Nantucket
Whose dick was so long he could suck it
He said with a grin
As he wiped off his chin,
"If my ear were a cunt I would fuck it!"

OK - Back to real subject!

This is the lisst my reference book came up with:

The Pyramids at Gizeh
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
The Colussus of Rhodes
The Pharos (Lighthouse) at Alexandria
The Temple of Artemis
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

This list has the statue of Zeus over the library at Alexandria.

You just have a dirty mind. Here is G rated version

There was an old man from Nantucket
Who kept all his cash in a bucket
His young daughter, Nan
Ran off with a man
And as for the bucket, Nan tucket.

I'd like to nominate the movie "Ishtar"

The never-ending discussion about "does size matter?"

This guy >>> :nana:

Why there are so many colors that make up the Human Race

The terms "beaver" and "pussy" and how they somehow got equated to refering to a woman's vaginal area

Scientology

And lastly ...

How much money the guy made from inventing those stupid little tropical drink umbrellas

I've wondered about these things far more often than anything on the list posted above ...

:D
