State troopers are confiscating tampons, maxi pads and other potential projectiles from those who are entering the Texas capitol to watch the debate and vote on a controversial anti-abortion bill. Guns, however, which are typically permitted in the state capitol, are still being allowed.

Update: They've stopped now. Apparently somebody realized it made them look like douchcanoes.

As someone said on FB, if you can get a maxi pad to travel from the gallery to the senators, you should immediately be elected gov for awesomeness. Just because they have wings doesn't make them aerodynamic.

What?

I thought its economy was booming, its toilets were made of gold, yadda, yadda.

People keep saying that, yet the state gov't. keeps claiming it can't afford to pay for stuff. Schools, prisons, that sort of thing.

So many levels of wow.
When I first heard about the proposed changes to the abortion laws I thought it was to get rid of abortion completely in Texas. To read that it is just to stop abortions after 20 weeks, I'm gobsmacked that anyone would protest against that.
I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant. I've known for 6 weeks. If I wanted to terminate, I would have 2 weeks to do it in where I live. After that it would be illegal. Personally, I think that is more than fair. In another 10 weeks I will definitely be showing and will quite likely be able to feel baby move. I'll know if it's a boy or a girl. If I hadn't made my mind up about whether or not I wanted it by then, well I would have to be an idiot.
I could rant about late term abortions until the cows come home, but I'm going to stop.

Most abortions that happen after 20 weeks are those done out of medical necessity to save the mother's life. The reason why you don't want them to be illegal is because saving lives is usually a good thing. Additionally, only five abortion clinics will be left open in the state, making abortion unfeasible for many women across Texas.

Haha! :D

Exactly. The whole point of the bill (which has been mostly copied from other bills in other states, many of which have already been blocked by the courts) is to make abortion harder to get, with the ultimate goal of making it functionally illegal without technically violating Roe v. Wade.

Here medically necessary late term abortions are allowed. You cannot criminalise a medically necessary procedure.
Here travel is often a necessity for women seeking abortions. It hasn't stopped anyone I know.

And yet, there is no exception for medical necessity in the bill. Attempts to amend it and add those exceptions were shot down.

Also, I said elsewhere that somewhere, a Daily Show writer is giving thanks for the TX Lege.

SB5 will shut down all but five abortion providers in Texas. Any idea how big Texas is?

That is seriously crazy.

About half the size of western Australia that only has about that many clinics.

WTF? Texas Police Confiscate 18 Jars Of Feces From Pro-Abortion Protesters Trying To Disrupt Vote On Pro-Life Bill…

Crapping in a jar for use as a weapon… how progressive.

They also had a jar filled with urine and bottles with paint in them.

AUSTIN, TEXAS (DPS) — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) today received information that individuals planned to use a variety of items or props to disrupt legislative proceedings at the Texas Capitol.

Therefore for safety purposes, DPS recommended to the State Preservation Board that all bags be inspected prior to allowing individuals to enter the Senate gallery, which the State Preservation Board authorized.

During these inspections, DPS officers have thus far discovered one jar suspected to contain urine, 18 jars suspected to contain feces, and three bottles suspected to contain paint. All of these items – as well as significant quantities of feminine hygiene products, glitter and confetti possessed by individuals – were required to be discarded; otherwise those individuals were denied entry into the gallery.

In the interest of the safety and security of Texas legislators and the general public, these inspections will continue until the conclusion of Senate business.

Oh, ew! That's just wrong.

Some were asking why they were stripped of these items while concealed-carry permit holders were allowed to take their guns into the Capitol. I can only imagine that the explanation for this is the simplest one: CCW permit holders don’t tend to shoot people; protesters carrying feces to fling tend to, well, fling feces.
