I thought it was the amount of money it rakes in during either the first day or the first week... or something. Bah, I don't know -- it has to do with money, as usual.

Box Office is a term left over from Shakespeare. The Box was literally hand held and pence were deposited into them for the tickets/entrance fee. (For the floor crowd) The Boxes were then locked in an office to be counted later. The term refers to the number of boxes filled-or that's what I learned. Nowadays, the term refers to the number of tickets sold, if I'm not mistaken.

There's no official definition of box office hit, it's just a subjective term. The studio will probably consider the film a hit if it exceeds projected box office revenue. Actors might consider the film a hit if their fans really like it. Your local newspaper will probably call the film a hit if it sold the most tickets last week.

that a film MUST gross 2 and a half times its cost to be considered a money maker. Thus some films that made a ton aren't considered hits at all.
