Seeing the Spirituality thread kept making the word Serenity pop into my head.

So what does everyone do to find some serenity; a respite from the weary world; peace when confusion reigns?

I cook.

And as a delayed relation because I don't have hugs on tap, cuddling up with the man, cos he can make it all go away.

And in warmer months, I go to the beach, sit in the sand and look at the ocean.

I ALWAYS use this around Festivus. Whew. The whole Festivus season has become sooo stressful, what with the increasing fisticuffs resulting from the airing of the grievances and all.

And I go to the woods. That's my Prozac.

In the words of Emerson:

"Standing on the bare ground, my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space, all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball – I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me – I am part or particle of God. The name of the nearest friend sounds then foreign and accidental; to be brothers, to be acquaintances-master or servant, is then a trifle, and a disturbance. I am a lover of uncontained and immortal beauty. In the wilderness, I have something more connate and dear than in the streets or villages. In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the horizon, man beholds somewhat as beautiful as his own nature."

LOVE THIS! I'll have to practice that more often.

We use that one at work all the time, specially when clients and/or politics are driving us mental.

But to answer the question, I guess I watch tv. Preferably a comedy so I can just laugh and take my mind off things.

This is what came to mind first when I read the Serenity title for this post...

But when seeking soul soothing serenity... I seek a few different places...

1) My bath tub for a very hot herbal salt soak with candles with either a loaded ipod... or a cracked window where I can hear the frogs and crickets...or on the rare night it happens here... Rain... Perfect.

2) My meditation garden in progress...It has a loose brick path that loops around a little pond and waterfall...herbs and veggies and flowers growing about...and a large cushy porch swing that overlooks everything when I want to nap. I pace laps around the pond...or clip and weed in my garden...or lay on my swing and just sway watchign the birds pick at the seed in the feeders... Perfect.

3) Sometimes though when I need to get away from my life in general and just feel present there is a small strip of beach that is my favorite place to be. It is a special place because it is covered in what look like black river rock kind of stones. When the tide is high it splashes all the way up the sand then when the water pulls back out it tumbles the rocks and makes a sound that I swear makes my soul purr. It is most magical at night around 2 am just after it rains when the filtered moon beams tickle the rocks and water with silver light as they roll around together... That moment...my feet buried in cold sticky sand... breathing in a salty cool breeze...my hands buried in my sweatshirt pockets...soaking it all in... Perfect.

I have a few ways, and sometimes it just strikes me. Pretty much the same ways I "connect" also cause me to have some degree of serenity (either during or after the activity).

I think I feel the most serene when I have the chance to do absolutely nothing but relax with an animal :)

Meditation, music (especially Il Divo), immersing myself in nature (preferrably without crowds of people around, and especially if there is water involved), reading any one of my Dalai Lama books, and just sitting in our living room watching the birds in the garden come and go and play.

I drive to the river, paddle, skim stones, relax with a good book.

Walk up the cliffs and look down at the waves crashing over the rocks below.

Or if I am in a really goofy mood I go to the golf driving range, get 100 golf balls and go Happy Gilmore on them.

Not to be trite, but the number one for me simply must be getting home from wherever I was, seeing my girlfriend's smile, and getting to hug her again.

In less mushy territory, I write for relaxation. When I get in the zone, it's very hard to distract me.

For whatever reason, anime or Doctor Who, whichever I can find first, has an incredibly relaxing effect on me. That, and Jpop music in general will just space me out like nothing else. Can't say why, it's just always been that way.
