A woman's point of view

Mickie and the_old_man:

I take exception to the generalizations you both are making. Who says women don't like smut? Who says a woman can't appreciate this point of view? Do either of you not know women who are willing to be the agressor or at the least does not need to be seduced? I can't remember the last time I needed to be seduced to enjoy sex. Guys, that's silly.

And old_man you're sounding a tad too defensive with that logic about voting. I don't vote without commenting. I may read and not vote. But, I have no qualms telling a writer what I think. I'm your Joann when it comes to writing. I think if you're going to rate something the writer deserves to know the basis for your vote.

"Unconventional tastes"? That's almost funny. We're on a sex site with penises, asses, cum shots constantly in our view. Incest and non-consent are two of the most popular themes. What's conventional about anyone's views here? :p

I think it's tad arrogant for you to purport what other folks tastes are. I'm pretty open to almost every category on this board. What I don't like is sloppy writing.

Yeah, I know the circumstances under which you wrote this. I know your intent. You also posted it in a forum for discussion. That means I'm free to evaluate your writing. I'm not judging your feelings.

Peace,

daughter

Okay, daughter. I do like a straight-forward woman. :) And generalizing might not be the best thing to do, but I was trying to give the Old Man some direction to look when he's thinking about why the story gains a popular vote when the critics obviously dislike it. I'm not saying I'm right, or that you're wrong. I'm offering an opinion, here. And when you try to figure out a general audience for your work, then it helps to generalize.

In my own experience, women tend toward needing that seduction aspect. The women I've been with would rather not discuss how and what. They shrug and blush if you ask their opinion on what position they want to use. That might just be a comment on the kind of women I'm attracted to or are attracted to me, but I can only speak from experience and personal knowledge. Thus, my generalization is proved valid only for a portion of the female gender. I apologize. I generalize the male gender too, if that matters at all. *sighs*

Regroup, here. So the consensus of this critical audience is that the writing itself prevented any real enjoyment of the story? The popularity is the result of the voters not caring what the story was about, just that the sex, for some, was hot enough to rate it higher? I'm not clear on that answer. Some of the comments say the sex was boring because of the clinical discussion of it in the dialogue.

Mickie

You're right

Mickie--

If I didn't pick on you, who would? ;)

I hear you.

Peace,

daughter

Stick a fork in it

Well, I think we beat this one to death pretty well. And just out of curiosity, old man, was I one of the writers whose work caused you revulsion? And don't be afraid to give an honest answer-- I pride myself on being able to cause revulsion in people!
:p

enough

The question "Why does my story get high ratings?"
might be worth discussing, if, as Mickie suggests,
the author wished to listen, learn and improve.
Else it's speculative and a waste of time considering
why 50 persons, of the million visitors per day,
gave a certain story a "5".

Sex detail "redeems" a piece for some, where the
lead character speaks like "Data": [I like 69]
"Where the woman is clean with no stale urine or other
contamination." and the lustful female opens her legs to be
checked rather than smashes the fellow's head with
a poker from the fireplace;

where the author, does NOT, as claimed, even care enough to
spell check conscientiously, else non-words like
"indeterminant", on the first page, would have been eliminated.

I've no more time for this.

Lighten up

Lighten up, abashed dreamer. Spelling and grammar aren't everything. And sure, "indeterminant" isn't in the dictionary (at least not the one I checked), but "indeterminate" is. Haven't you heard of neologisms-- coined words? It's an author's right to coin a word, as long as the reader can figure out what it means.
:D

Abashed, with all due respect, you still haven't tried to answer the question. Why, even with all the flaws, is this story so well liked in the popular market? So far, all I've understood (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that these are reasons why you didn't like it, and nothing about why other people might like it.

As for what an author does with his stories, it really is up to the author to take or leave what we say. It doesn't bother me if the story remains exactly the way it is and the author refuses to do a thing to change it. It's no skin off my nose.

However, just a note here -- I believe Old Man is editing this story, and will resubmit it when he's finished. I wonder, though, if the numbers will actually go up in the popular vote or if it won't make much of a difference. I'd be interested to find out.

Mickie

We've dealt with the spelling/grammatical problems.
Let's talk about the story elements.
There is a bit of day-dream about his guy. He has a
fortune which he mostly hides.
The daughter starts with seducing her father/stepfather
and several years later, she doesn't *know* that any man could
eat her out???

The "solution" to the daughter's problems are still another
day-dreamish aspect of the story.
What is it that has challenged them?

Why I would vote

I think the reason for it's high voting numbers has been over looked. It's obvious that the people who have posted in this thread aren't the ones who would score it high, or even score it period. So I don't think "The_Old_Man" has been given a real answer. I did however notice many people went out of their why to tell him what he already knew, about the grammer. But guess what? A large amount of us readers can't spell or put together a proper sentence, so after weeding thru our own mistakes on a daily basis these aren't anything new to us (Just an opinion).

One of my favorite stories of all time is "Alex tells a bear story" by James Whitcomb Riley [sp?] It's a grammatical nightmare, but it works.

"The_Old_Man's story had it's faults, as I'm sure all of mine do to, but it had an ending that left you smiling, at least it did for me. It's that moment that I vote, not after I cut and paste it into a word doc and pick it apart. I vote based on how stories make me feel, and the ending was cool. It didn't get me very excited, but it didn't turn me away either.

One other thing I was wondering, if you bust a nut half way thru the story do you vote? Or just close the window and go about your day? For me I never even make it to the end of some stories that I thought were great. But I never voted because I didn't think about it. I guess thats a typical guy thing, roll over and go to sleep.

C-ya.
