I'm inquiring as to why I read so many stories that have spelling errors each and every day. But when I send mine in there sent back repeatedly telling me to check for errors with only 1 or 2 simple keystroke mistakes ?

Sorry if this sounds abrupt, but we don’t know. Only Laurel knows. Why not PM her?

I have found her to be kind, supportive and responsive (particularly given her workload).

This site has existed for decades. The nature of the review board (1 person) and the nature of the growing workload, make for plenty of examples of things slipping through, being acceptable in the past but no more, or similar "unfairnesses."

Better to take rejection with a grain of salt.

In the skim, yours happened to stand out where others maybe didn't. Or, you were in a low volume period and checks could be more detailed.

I'd fix my mistakes then move on to the next.

The upside of rejection/repair is getting better in the future. (less hassling. More narrative clarity. Just being a better writer overall.)

Because shit happens, I have the T-shirt. I think they are reasonably priced at Amazon. ;) Seriously, who knows why things get rejected or accepted? I have a total of one story sent back because of an inadvertent 12 rather than 21 on the age of a character. Since I'm dyslexic, I missed the second occurrence, and it was sent back a second time. I'd broken my glasses, and the replacements (costing $400 smackers) hadn't arrived yet. I've had misused words, a few misspelled words, and some questionable and confusing phrases that got through. I go back and edited and reposted most when I realized my mistakes.

But seriously, again, shit happens! :p

It’s weird.

My last story got sent back but I’m glad it did as the errors I initially missed would have ruined the story.

But it is weird how some are riddled with errors and it instantly tayks yu owt of the storee.

But, I say best we be the better versions of ourselves rather than bitching about other people.

Was speaking to your small hiccups, glasses delayed short circuiting an easy, natural fix for you.

Fate was being a trickster that day.
So, I broke down last time I broke my glasses, and bought colored glasses to fix the problem, rather than the ones with lines down them. Now I write with rose-colored glasses. It hasn't given my writing any cheerier shades or optimistic flavoring, though.

The world is not on steady enough footing for you to start writing all bubble gum. ;)

My advice:

Look at it as a positive.

Your story got sent back because of mistakes. Mistakes you made.

Be glad for it. You have the chance to correct those mistakes before publishing, instead of it going public and now readers call you out on them.

Fix the mistakes and resubmit.

I wish more of my stories got sent back to fix obvious spelling errors. Because I have several up that are rather embarrassing.

Don't know why this is a complaint.

Don't compare yourself to the other guy whose substandard work got through when yours didn't.

Put your energy into fixing the issues that have been identified, resubmit better copy, and you've lifted your own quality bar. Aiming higher is what makes you better as a writer, not staying level with the junk.

Yes, moderation is not 100% consistent. But also, are you sure it's only one or two? It's easy to underestimate the errors in our own work; after all, if we were aware of them we'd have fixed them already.
