senate votes to remove confederate names from military bases

Nobody stationed at those posts sat around having deep intellectual discussions as to how the facilities got their names. There were discussions as to who and what units were stationed there in the past. In effect the history of those posts started AFTER the posts were named, not before.

What is happening is a wholesale attempt on the part of people who are generally ignorant to destroy the history of the nation for wholly insignificant reasons. Symbolism over substance. A nations history should be remembered, even the ugly parts, it is a reminder of how far we've come and where we mind end up again if not careful.

The names of bases should be left the way they are unless opposed by the states in which they exist. For instance, Fort Bragg California's name should be up to the people of California, who might want to rename it Fort Newsom.

Fort Bragg North Carolina, named after Braxton Bragg, a native North Carolinian and West Point graduate who became a Confederate army general following secession, should be left up to the people of North Carolina, he is their native son.

The reason why these bases were named after Confederate Generals was to draw more volunteers from these states into the United States Army to fight the Germans in WW1. The South had a proud and recognized warrior tradition the nation needed at the time and this was a method to appeal to that spirit by recognizing revered heroes of the South in their base naming protocol.

Historians generally rate Bragg as one of the worst tacticians on either side during the war, and his losses were major contributors to the Confederate States of America's (CSA) defeat.

Maybe they could leave Bragg since he seemed to be Union asset.

Bragg is generally considered among the worst generals of the Civil War. Most of the battles in which he engaged ended in defeat. Bragg was extremely unpopular with both the men and the officers of his command, who criticized him for numerous perceived faults, including poor battlefield strategy, a quick temper, and overzealous discipline. Bragg has a generally poor reputation with historians; while some point towards the failures of Bragg's subordinates, especially Leonidas Polk—a close ally of Jefferson Davis and known enemy of Bragg—as more significant factors in the many Confederate defeats at Bragg's command. The losses which Bragg suffered are cited as principal factors in the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy.

He was commended for distinguished service in the war with Mexico and gained national fame in the Battle of Buena Vista. He was commended for his actions at Shiloh as well despite heavy losses.Though we can debate the usefulness of the frontal assault in the Civil War, it's all they had at the time and should not be criticized by generations who actually evolved their military tactics because of it.

He definitely wasn't the best southern general to take the field during the Civil War, but the naming of Fort Bragg didn't have anything to do with his battlefield prowess, it had more to do with the fact that he was a native son North Carolina for the reasons I've previously explained.

I suggest renaming them after Cornwallis, Benedict Arnold, Erwin Rommel and Ho Chi Minh.

Yes. Name the bases after those who famously banged your family members (female, male, and other) in the past. That seems fair.

No.

Exactly. Doing their jobs. The base or fort name is not relevant to their assignments.

There is no doubt that it is symbolic and obviously political (since the Left had 8 years under President Obama to do something but, of course, did nothing).

And the Cancel Culture is 1984-level dangerous. But this is the Left. It destroys. It eliminates. Nothing is more dangerous than leftists (communists, socialists, anarchists, totalitarians).

However, in the case of names going back to the US Civil War on the Confederate side (aka the Democrats) they should have been removed a long time ago. Confederate military leaders were literally military personnel representing another country with its own capitol and currency for a four year period of time.

As for statues symbols matter. They will be erected and torn down over time as civilizations change, adapt, grow or die. Just like cemeteries or burial sites. Just like cities and cultures. Nothing is permanent from a human civilization standpoint.

Rename ALL bases named after confederate OR union officers. People should be subjected to the civil war in history class, not in daily life. If it would help salve the egos of modern day comfederates, remove statues of union officers from the public square as well as confederate officers. The civil war era is something neither side should be proud of. Atrocities were committed by both sides.

How about no.

If a state has a beef with the name or a base let them beef with the feds over that.

If not, then there is no need to fuck with it and all the control freak Karen types can mind their own fuckin' bidnizz.

All of the great civilizations failed when tested.

Human beings, at the core, suck. So it's inevitable that the US will eventually crumble or morph into something else. Not yet though.

The US is "great" but it also has flaws and a past that with parts that are indefensible and ugly. The same goes for every single nation, territory, culture or tribe past, present, and future.

Show me a culture, tribe, group, or nation and I will find a background of war, destruction, slavery, genocide, exploitation, and inhumanity. That goes for every continent and every culture. Some are obviously worse than others.

it might be germane to mention Confederate soldiers were "pardoned" after the war with few exceptions. General Lee's amnesty and full status as an American citizen was granted by Gerald Ford after the discover of his signed amnesty pledge was discovered in the National Archives in 1975. So really, there is no basis for renaming those bases unless requested by the states involved.

Naming army bases after treasonous losers is the same as today's participation trophies. Poor snowflakes.

Why do the Army and Marines still use Camp and Fort while the Air Force uses Base and the Navy uses Station??

Agreed, you won't find one like American however who for the first time in recorded history proclaimed the inalienable rights of the individual and provided a unique governing document that allows for the evolution of those principles to be realized by all of those it governs.

Yeah, from a white persons perspective I can see how that makes sense.

Wait a minute.......Did you just demonstrate a perfect example of white privilege and support institutional racism in the military????

Maybe it shouldn't be called white privilege.

Maybe it should be called white indifference or white insensitivity.

Both are just another way of saying white people don't care about black people.

In service traditional nomenclature. An Army camp is usually smaller and temporary when compared to a stationary fort. The Marine Corps a Naval amphibious force thought of their encampments as temporary but with its growth over time their installations became permanent bases, but the Marines decided to retain the term camp for some bases out of tradition.

^^^

The above is just another way of you saying you're ignorant. The amnesty also applied to black soldiers who fought for the South. The white people in the North who formed the anti-slavery Republican Party, cared enough about black people in the South to sacrifice the lives of over 350,000 of their sons to free the black slaves owned by Democrats in the South, you dumb SOB.
