I have an online friend across the pond that I would love to send photos to. I wish I had a trusted friend here who would shoot them for me, but I don't, so I am left to self-photography.

Is it possible to get a decent shot of one's self using lights and mirrors and a 35 mm camera? Does anyone have any suggestions, technical advice, etc?

Tripods and timers work wonders. ;) If that fails, you can try the lights and mirrors thing, though they tend to not work as well.

If your camera has a timer, it is certainly possible. Mirrors are not good - you get the flash. Be careful when you get film developed, however. If you plan on taking pictures you wouldn't want your mother to see, there are some places that won't develop them.

Best bet? Borrow some one's digital camera. They are easy to set up for timers, and if the shot doesn't come out just right, you just delete and take over. Plus, you can download directly to your computer or CD and possibly send them via email.

Good luck!

i <3 webcams. (and digital cameras.. and timers/b&w film/free school darkrooms.)

Go with a digital camera! It's the best way to do it. There are some dirt cheap point & shoots that offer some nice pics. Try to compose the shot in the viewfinder, click the timer, scamper in front & VOILA! If it's not to your liking you can always re-shoot without incurring any costs. Besides this will also spare you the awkwardness of having to drop off film to be developed.

It can be done..

This I did in my bathroom, as it's the only decient mirror in the house.

I took it with no flash (as a flash is useless in a mirror shot).. using a small desklamp below out of frame, to offset the room lights from above.

Used ASA 800 setting, with a wide apeture (f/3.5) exposure 1/30

there are small cheap tabletop tripods you can get if you don't already have one, and rather than use a timer, I would suggest getting a cable release. A standard one is only about a foot long but I know at a decent camera shop you should be able to get a longer one (up to @12 ft.)

Or better, if you could borrow a digital camcorder, plug in a small TV so you could monitor yourself and make the pose you want. Then with the computer you can cut the frame that you want to send.

Thanks gang!

...for all the tips and hints and advice. Sounds like a digital camera is in my future...............lol

Now there's a thought! Send movies across! Toss in sound & that'll drive anyone on the other end crazy!

A digital camera is the way to go. I've got one that will also work as a video camera if attached to my PC, which is great for both video conferencing and making videos.

If you go that route, the trick is to limit the file size of the video you take or else you'll find it difficult (or impossible) to transfer electronically and have to burn it to CD and then send it by regular mail which is so slow. Not that I've done any of these things of course ;)

Can you imagine if customs got a hold of somthing like that? Or transferred to the wrong email account or something?

Now THAT sounds like a porn story somebody should write.

Just to add my $.02 worth, but the suggestion of the Digi camera is a great one.

I worked in a photo lab and we had a few folks that would bring in their "home photography" to us. In spite of trying to maintain a professional appearence, we would find ourselves laughing at some of the shots. Because of my experience with working on the developing end of photography, I bought a digi camera so that I could send MY-former-Sir photos across the pond. I would just set the timer, and get into the position HE wanted to see me in. Worked great and no one but He and I saw the shots.

I'll be using it again soon for MY-Cyber-Sir's pleasure. Love those digi pics!:D

-kym- making sure my digi is fully charged :p

kym... if your digi wasn't fully charged, I'm sure there would be plenty of folks here who would love to charge it for you! Such the naughty little vixen you can be at times but that's why we love you here!
