Are my erotic stories better and a more enjoyable to read when I write them from images in my imagination or when I format them from a real life occurrance? To those who have actually read my work, what do you think?

You should post up a link to your work and then we could read it and tell you.

Hello,

It's a rainy miserable Sunday afternoon here in the UK and I really should be writing, but I was distracted by your post so I went to take a look.

I read Leeanne Gets Her Wish. I don't know whether this story is a fantasy or based on fact but the first thing that struck me was the sudden change in tense:

Leeanne's mind was racing: her body awash with wave after wave of both fear and anticipation.

She looked out of the window and down at the silver car, which was now parked in her driveway.

A nervous sigh escaped from somewhere deep within her: allowing the captive air, unknowingly taken hostage with in her, to be finally free again.

It is not too late to back out, she reminded herself.

"God: what was I thinking" the words resound in the back of her mind, "Coffee, it's just coffee, Leeanne."

She watches as the man alights from the driver's seat, surveying his new environment and then raises his head to search the front of the house.

She turned, lowering her head to take one last look at herself and then walks to the front door to let him in.

Slowly she opens the door and peeks outside.

The second thought I had was the short, snappy sentences which almost read like a list.

The man: upon observing her coyly looking out from behind the door; smiles at her, winks and says "Hi."

"Hello Claude," she replies; trying to sound more cavalier than she is actually feeling, "Come in."

He does.

I wanted to know a little more about the characters as well - such as why she was surfing the net looking for love, why did he suddenly end their online relationship, if he lived near (did he?), why hadn't he visited her before when their online meetings were going well? Why had he changed his mind about talking to her online and even going so far as to visit her in person?

These are just my personal thoughts and this is only one of your stories that I read. I'd like to go and check out more.

To janiexx and any others who may be reading this

Thankyou for your reply. Yes, that was my first story and it was a mixture of both fantasy and fact and it wasn't my best work either.
Hopefully, since then I've improved slightly.
An example of a true life story is this one:

An example of a made up story is:

I guess what I'm seeking to know is do I have enough knowledge of erotica in my head or do I really have to go find it in real life to write about it successfully.

I find imagination is enough for me. I have very little experience in the real world.

It's emotions and characters that make for good erotica, in my opinion. And a skill at communicating them to your reader.

Real or fantasy doesn't matter if you can get those things across.

Hi Brandii,

I've been with the same man for 18 years and he was my first real lover so I don't think you need a huge amount of experience to write about sex successfully (my readers may disagree with me ;)).

I agree with rgraham666:

Before I starting writing erotica I fantasised a lot (still do) and the stories are a good outlet for this. I don't have vast experience of lesbian sex, group sex or any particular fetish, but by research, reading, watching movies, etc...I'm sure it's possible to write well on any subject you want to.

It's the ability to make the reader lose themselves in your work that's the key for me. If I can do that then I know I've done well.

Forgot to add - I'll read more of your stories when I get the chance. Sorry I picked on your first...

Message from Brandii

Thank you for your feedback guys. I really do want to be as brilliant a writer as most here on lit, although I do realize that most top notch writers here have been writing on lit for years and I, for only a few months. I lack confidence in my own ability, but hopefully that will change after a while.
I'm also extremely pleased that I'm not in the minority where inexperience with 99% of catagories are concerned and that other authors also write using their very active imaginations.

real life vs. imagination

Nearly every erotica piece I've written is at least somewhat based in real life. Some stories more than others, of course. Sometimes the story just has one character whose voice I based on someone I know. Other stories are based on real-life conversations or happenings. Some stories are based on actual sexual experiences.
