Seeking editors

Hello,

I've written a sequel (~8000 words) to my story "The Mexican Stand-off" and would like to have a few extra sets of eyes to read it over and offer suggestions for improvement.

The sequel should stand on its own as a story (I hope!), but I'm trying to maintain the same style and tone that was set in "The Mexican Stand-off". In term of sexual content, the story deals with exhibitionism, younger F/older M, and wedded lust.

Although I consider my spelling and grammar to be above average, typos and other mistakes will inevitably slip through the cracks. So pinpointing of these types of errors, no matter how small, are most welcomed. However, what I really seek are editors who can comment on voice, tone, characters, and other intangibles that make a story better. I welcome all criticism as long as it's honest and is directed at the writing and not the writer.

My background is scientific in nature. I mention this because in scientific/academic writing an article is normally reviewed by three or four people before finally hitting press. So if you choose to review my work, please know that you will not be the only person editing the story. If seeking out more than one editor is not done on these boards or in literary editing then I apologise and amend my request to one reviewer.

PM me if interested. Thanks.

Caroline

It sounds like you might need one good editor (for the technical and intangibles) and several sharp beta readers (more focused on intangibles and overall impact), Caroline. That way, you'll get the extra eyes and feedback you need, but several people won't be spending time fixing the same mistakes and such. :)

Just to give you an idea of what others do, I'm turning to RL friends and forum members whose opinions I respect for beta reading. I have a balanced mix of backgrounds, perspectives and males/females in my pool, I think.

Anyway, best of luck with the writing, and I'm sure someone will be along shortly to volunteer for the editing! You might have luck finding beta readers in Story Feedback or may want to consider participating in Story Discussion Circle. :rose:

Thanks for the advice, although I'm not certain what you mean by 'beta' (secondary?... I'm sure you don't mean beta particles, lol). I've seen it used for software development in that fashion, but I'm not much of a techie. In any case, message received, and I now revise my request to one reviewer/editor. BTW, Thanks for the encouragement!

Caroline

P.S. What is 'RL'? .... I have a feeling I'm showing my age

RL means "Real Life"

A beta reader is, like an editor, someone that reads your story before you submit it. Here is a definition and great explanation of where the term originates.

My apologies for messing up my links. Fixed it.
