Seduced by the Squire (closed for cumnchat)

Feeling exceptionally fresh and most definitely frisky Joshua cuddled up to Bridget feeling her warmth under the covers. Carrie came in to ask what Bridget would like for breakfast and asked if she could have Marie to assist her for a couple of hours.

"Of course you can Carrie if you will bring me breakfast in bed also, I will take very great care of Bridget I assure you, she couldn't be in better hands." Joshua replied with a twinkle in his eye.

"Ay Sorr breakfast for two then, I'm sure Milady will stop yer 'ands from wand'rin' too far." Carrie replied, her eyes also twinkling merrily recognising the intent in Joshua's eyes.
Ten minutes later they were tucking into their breakfast or rather Joshua was, while Bridget was just picking at her food. When they had finished Joshua snuggled down with Bridget her head tucked under his arm and laying on his chest.

His free hand crept inside Bridget's nightie and he gently played with Bridget's large soft breasts, stroking and caressing them until Bridget began to pant and kiss his chest. He stopped and with a hangdog expression he apologised "I am sorry Bridget I did not mean to arouse you like that, knowing that all I can do is arouse you and no more."

They lay quietly for a few minutes exchanging the occasional chaste kiss when Joshua felt a flutter in Bridget's belly that travelled through to his own belly.

"Hey up young 'un it's not time for you come out yet no matter how curious you are."

He began to stroke the broad expanse of Bridget's belly and listened to her satisfied moans. Without meaning to he found his fingers among the fiery red heart on Bridget's mons, from then on he could not stop himself and Bridget made no move to stop him as he drifted lower and found the hard little nub that throbbed excitedly under his fingers. He rubbed it in little circles until Bridget's back arched and she gasped, no words just a gasp of relief. Putting his hand between her legs he felt that she was wet and putting his hand to his lips he could taste her.

"I hope that I haven't caused you any distress my love but I will be in distress if you do not reciprocate. He threw the covers back and his erection pointed skywards, he pointed to it and laughed,

"In case you have forgotten you can begin there."

She really was not very hungry. Lately the baby had been very active and it seemed that every time that she tried to eat, the food would back up on her. She no longer felt as if the baby was pressing against her lungs. It even felt as if the baby was lower. The Doctor was going to check on her later today.

After they had their breakfast, Joshua's hands began to roam over her body as she snuggled up against him. He soon had her panting and the baby was busy kicking at Joshua as her stomach was up against him, as if trying to get its daddy's attention. Joshua tried to calm down the baby by stroking her huge belly and before long his fingers found their way down to her sex. With fingers that knew his wife and her body well, he soon had her making soft titters and squeals as she came. The baby began to kick and she placed her hand on her belly. She liked that but she needed to tell Joshua that they needed to wait until after the baby was born.

I hope that I haven't caused you any distress my love but I will be in distress if you do not reciprocate. In case you have forgotten you can begin there.

She laughed. "You, my love, are incorrigible!" And with that, she ran her palm over the straining tip, coating it in the slickness rolling from it before she wrapped her dainty fingers around his rampant manhood. Her hand began to slide up and down, squeezing and rubbing it. Growing up at Rose Cottage, she had milked the cows many times and had a strong grip.

Soon, she had her husband groaning as his thrusting was followed with thick ropes of his seed shooting like a fountain from the tip of his member. Giggling, she kept up her actions until the last of it bubbled over her hand.

"What a right mess you've made." She started to lick her hand, and found the taste making her stomach lurch a bit. Laughing, she tried changing the subject. "Doctor Brady will be coming any time. Let's get this place cleaned up before he gets here." Joshua gave her a kiss before quickly cleaning up the bed and surrounding area. He then helped Bridget change into a clean gown before setting aside the wrapper and bedding to be cleaned.

About 30 minutes later, the Doctor and Jean arrived. Jean told Joshua that the exam should take about 30-40 minutes as he left to take care of business in his study.

At the end of the exam, Jean was smiling as the Doctor explain.

"Well, Lady Bridget, your baby has dropped. I suspect that you have any time from now to about 3 weeks before you will be holding your baby in your arms. I don't think that it will be February after all." Bridget felt a range of emotions run through her - fear, excitement, anticipation, and more. Doctor Brady continued. "You will notice a few changes in walking, and having to go to the bathroom more often. You should be fine Christmas Day and Boxing Day. If you feel like it, go downstairs for the Christmas program. Go downstairs for Christmas morning, and for the meal. Of course, no get around without Joshua or someone else helping you. They just need to have a place where you can use the chamber pot while downstairs. But we are probably going to welcome the new year with new life. Meals may be smaller for you. If you don't feel like eating, don't push it. And I suspect that sex is a bit uncomfortable so it would probably be best to wait." She nodded.

He smiled at her. "Don't worry. From now until the day, either Jean or I or both of us will be here. We will check on you daily, and if you need us for anything, just send someone to get us."

He picked up his bag. "Now, let me go find Joshua and give him the news." Jean stayed with her until Joshua returned.

When Joshua returned to Bridget she was so excited, giving him the news that the baby might well arrive earlier than expected perhaps even before New Year. Normally being a calm type of man this news put him in a state of excitement and he fussed around Bridget fluffing up her pillows and constantly asking her if she was comfortable. He even went so far as to have screens erected on each wall of the Great Hall and a receptacle for Bridget's use if required.
Dougan called for him saying they were ready to leave for the orphanage and the sturdy horse dragged the fully laden sleigh out into the crisp white snow with bells tinkling. The sleigh slid easily over the snow leaving a trail behind it. They made good time to the orphanage where the children were washed and dressed waiting excitedly for them, as they came into view the children cheered, jumping up and down with excitement. The lunch they had brought was heated and the orphans ate what was probably their biggest meal for many a day.
Afterwards a snowball fight began between the children and the grown ups, for some reason Joshua found himself the main target which he took in good spirit. The evening began to draw in and the falling snow became heavier.
Joshua made a decision that delighted each one of the children.

"The snow will make it impossible for Santa to come to you tomorrow so we must take you all to Santa."

He bade them all to climb on the sleigh and they returned to the Manor lustily singing carols and Jingle Bells as they went. On arrival Joshua had them all bedded down in a warm barn and kissed each one in turn as they came to thank him for a wonderful day.

Finally he went to see Bridget,

"It seems your dream is coming true, the orphans number no less than fifteen."

Joshua seemed so excited that he would probably be a proud papa before the new year, fussing over her before he left for the orphanage. Once he left in the sleigh, it was decided that the Christmas Program that the servants were planning would wait until Christmas Day after the opening of their gifts. Everyone wanted to make things easier for Lady Bridget. Marie really enjoyed stepping into a position of power, making certain that Bridget's wrapper was washed and clean so that the mother-to-be could wear it and be comfortable Christmas Day. Carrie set aside a fainting couch down in the library so that Bridget could take a nap between the Christmas program and the dinner.

Bridget had a lot on her mind and did not even argue with Marie when she was told to pee in the basin. And since Joshua was busy at the orphanage, Carrie had Dougan and Pete walk Bridget in the afternoon.

Cook worked on last minute jobs in preparation for tomorrow afternoon's big meal. Little Miss Amelia May seemed to know that she was not the center of attention at the moment and began throwing a fit, crying until her little face was bright red. For such a little thing, her lungs let out a mighty cry and no amount of attention from Bathsheba seemed to calm her down. Finally, being held by her mama seemed to do the trick and she stayed in Carrie's arms until she eventually fell asleep. It was then that the baby looked like a little cherub.

Bridget was beginning to worry about Joshua as it was getting late and she was afraid that he may have had a problem with the new sleigh. Finally, Carrie came in to let her know that Joshua had returned with a lot of guest. It seemed that he had brought back the children from the orphanage and was setting them up snugly in the barn. A couple of the servants, Rodrick and Diana, offered to stay out in the barn to protect the little ones, tell them Christmas stories, keep away any ogres and other scary things from the dark, help with any bathroom breaks, and make sure that everyone was kept nice and safe and warm. They were to get them up Christmas morning and get them all washed up and up to the house for a nice warm breakfast of toast and porridge with raisins on top, and fresh milk. At first, Marie was upset that Diana may start something with Rodrick, but Diana assured her that she had no designs on Rodrick and that she hoped to someday become more educated through the new school that Lord Lexford was opening up in the old house that had belonged to Isaac Crabbe and then possibly get a job in London with a family there.

When Joshua finally made it up to the Master bedroom, Bridget would have run into his arms if she could have. Instead, he came over and kissed her, his face and ears ice cold as he kissed her soundly, telling her, It seems your dream is coming true, the orphans number no less than fifteen.

Soon he was undressed and spooning her, his arms wrapped around her and his hands spread protectively across her huge belly. The little one inside kicked impatiently against his hand, as if asking where Daddy had been all afternoon.

"The baby has been very active all afternoon. Almost as if he or she were trying to kick a new way out into the world."

Bridget snuggled back against her husband and fell asleep, looking forward to Christmas morn.

*****

The sun peeked over the horizon Christmas morning, slowly rising as if cold from the snowy landscape. Cook was busy in the kitchen preparing a large bowl of sweetened porridge and slicing thick slices of hearty bread preparing to toast them. Large blocks of fresh butter stood nearby so that it could be slathered on the warm toast.

Out in the barn, some of the children were up and chattering excitedly, anxious to see if Santa has found them even though they were not at the orphanage. A few of the kids woke up slowly, though once the kids were reminded as to what awaited them at the main house, there was a wild and wet race to hurry up and get dressed. Rodrick wound up thoroughly drenched at one point when one of the little boys tried shaking his head like a dog as he washed his face.

Finally, once everyone was totally bundled up, they headed off in a line like ducks across the open courtyard towards the manor, Diana leading the way and Rodrick at the rear. A few of the kids pretended to be ducks, quacking as they tromped through the fluffy snow. Soon all 15 children sat around the dining table, each one eating a bowl of piping hot porridge covered with fat raisins and thick toast and butter and a glass of milk.

Upstairs, Amelia woke up wet and hungry and Bathsheba began changing her diaper while Carrie, hearing her baby crying down the hall in the nursery, put on her wrap to go feed her baby. Dougan was quickly up and dressed before heading down to make sure that the day ran smoothly. Maids headed out to check on the guest, stoking the fires in the fireplaces and heating back up the rooms so that people could get up and get ready to head downstairs.

The household was slowly waking up and smiles and sounds of 'Happy Christmas' filled the air.

For once Joshua did not wake early although he let Bridget sleep on as it was bound to be a tiring day for her. He lay propped on one elbow studying her, her fiery red locks strewn across the pillows like a fiery halo, her delicate pink lips pursed as if waiting for a kiss, her cute button nose wrinkling in a soft gentle snore, her chin was well defined and he knew only too well that once it was set defiantly nothing would change her mind. The rest of her body was emblazoned on his mind, perfectly proportioned with a most heavenly pair of breasts. between her legs he knew lay the most precious treasure of all, moist and soft and able to bring cries of delight from him. For an instant but only an instant he felt a pang of jealousy for their baby who was denying him the pleasure that Bridget could bring him.
Bridget began to stir and he immediately wrapped his arm round her and turned her head toward him for that sweet kiss her lips promised.

"Good morning my love, a Happy Christmas to you and our little one in there, I do hope he has no plans to make an appearance today."

At that moment Marie entered after knocking and announced "Everyone is up and about doing whatever it is they are supposed to be doing so let's not have any fretting from yew Milady."

Joshua thanked Marie and informed her that she was to put it about that today he and Bridget would only answer to their given names "On a day like today there is only one person who should be addressed as My Lord"

He noticed that Marie was stood hovering with a shallow receptacle in her hands.

"I am sorry, I am keeping you from taking care of Bridget, please excuse me."

Marie and Bridget giggled as he covered himself and hurried from the room to wash and shave. When he had finished he retrieved the package from where he had hidden it and pushed it deep into his pocket. By the time he had finished Bridget was dressed and Marie was putting the finishing touches to her hair.

"You,,, you look radiant Bridget, Marie can you run along and find Dougan and someone else to take Bridget down in her chair so she can make her big entrance?"

Within a few minutes Dougan and a sturdy well built man, called Adrian, who had kept to himself since Isaac's house had been vacated both arrived with Bridget's bath chair.
Dougan was preparing to help Adrian lift Bridget into the chair when Adrian waved him away,

"I can manage very well thankyou, I used to care for my mother when she became frail."
He spoke quietly to Bridget, "If you would just put one arm around my neck Ma'am."

He slipped one arm around her ample waist and the other behind her knees and lifted her effortlessly and lowered her gently into the chair. Between Dougan and Adrian they took Bridget into the dining room where the orphans were finishing their breakfast, the rest of the household were gathered there except for Pete and Brian. Everyone clapped Bridget as she had been the driving force behind this special day.

As the clapping died away there was the sound of sleigh bells outside and the doors flew open but no Santa, instead there stood the mournful looking figure of a clown.

"I am so sorry everyone but Santa has been looking all night for a group of very good children who weren't where they were supposed to be, I don't suppose any one knows of some orphans without any presents do they?"

Before he had finished speaking he was almost drowned out by the excited children shouting to him.

The clown's face was now wreathed in smiles,

"How fortunate that Santa decided to see if there were any deserving children here."

Behind him appeared the figure of Santa with a bulging sack of toys.

"HO, HO, HO, found you at last, who wants to sit on my knee before they get their present."

"ME, ME, ME, ME, ME PLEASE SANTA" They all vied for his attention as he sat down and perched them one by one on his knee and searched in his sack for an appropriate present. When he was done he was presented with a large glass of whiskey and a piping hot mince pie.

As the children played with their new toys he and the clown slipped away and the sleigh bells disappeared into the distance.

Joshua was misty eyed as he saw how happy the orphans were, he leaned over and whispered to Bridget.

"Did my eyes deceive me or was that poor sick Pete masquerading as a clown."

As Bridget began to wake up, she was greeted with a passionate kiss before Joshua gave a morning run to the baby in her tummy.

Good morning my love, a Happy Christmas to you and our little one in there, I do hope he has no plans to make an appearance today.

Oh, 'he' may just be a 'she', my love, all ready to wrap her papa around her tiny little finger. And a Happy Christmas to you too."

There was a knock as Marie entered, knowing full well that she was really needed to pee. Marie assured her that everything was running smoothly and Joshua ducked out of the room while Marie helped Bridget get ready. Once her ablutions were completed, and her freshly laundered wrapper was put on, the young girl began arranging Bridget's hair in soft simple curls. When Joshua returned he pronounced that she looked radiant before sending Marie to get strong men to carry her downstairs.

Soon she was in the chair and downstairs. She could hear the children laugh and chattering as they approached the dining room. She blushed as everyone applauded her entrance. Smiling, she asked the children, "are you all having very Happy Christmas?", to which the room was filled with affirmative answers and clapping from the children.

Suddenly, in entered Pierrot, the sad clown from commedia dell'arte, hiding a face that had been in hiding for the past couple of days. Bridget fought to hide her grin as poor Pierrot moaned looking for lost children. Soon everyone was smiling as sweet Brian came in masquerading as Father Christmas, passing out gifts. With the gusto of all impatient children at Christmas time, the children tore into their gifts, the little girls clutching their new doll to their breast to hug them, rocking them in their arms or playing with their hair made of yarn or singing to their new little friend. Little boys played with their barnyard animals, mooing and quacking and neighing and making all kinds of funny animal sounds for their new toys.

As the children played, Santa and Pierrot slipped away though a sharp-eyed Joshua remarked, Did my eyes deceive me or was that poor sick Pete masquerading as a clown

"You mean Pierrot? Why yes, I do believe it was. Doctor Brady must be a genius!"

The children were led away to play with their new toys and the table was quickly cleared and set for the grown ups. Quickly the adults were seated, and a nice breakfast of back bacon, eggs, sausage, baked beans, black pudding, fried tomatoes and toasted slices of bread was served. Bridget just ate some bacon and eggs and a bit of toast. She didn't know if it was because of the baby or the excitement but she wasn't very hungry. She was anxious to give Joshua his gift.

Cook had worked wonders with the breakfast she had laid out considering the number of extra hungry mouths there were to feed but she took it all in her stride saying that she couldn't bear to see the poor little mites looking so scrawny.

As soon as breakfast was finished and the tables cleared there was a hum of expectation in the dining room with everyone wondering what their loved one had as a surprise for them. As decent quality paper was expensive few of the gifts were wrapped except in linen. Some of the gifts were fairly predictable such as when Carrie squealed with delight at the scandalous corset that Dougan had found for her.

"It'll be a while yet 'afore yew see me wearin' that." she giggled then added slyly with a broad wink at Dougan, "It does give me an incentive t'get back t'normal size as soon as possible with lots of exercise."

"Oi'll give ye as much exercise as ye want my sweet." Dougan replied lecherously.

Not to be outdone Rodrick gave Marie a pair of fine quality stockings, not silk, as they were out of reach of his pocket. Marie smiled sweetly and sat on the edge of the table and lifted her skirt above her knees and rolled down the stockings she was wearing and asked Rodrick to help her put on her new ones. She leaned back on her elbows waving her shapely legs in the air.

"If yor a good boy Rodrick ye can 'elp me take 'em orf t'night."

The majority of the company enjoyed the show, especially the gentlemen for as we already know she is a comly lass.

All this time Joshua had been gripping his present for Bridget and eventually he pulled out the case and the satin wrapping and placed it on the table in front of her.

"I hope you like it darling, not too ostentatious is it?"

He knew that he was far wealthier than any other man there and didnt want to appear to be flaunting it but the choker, necklace and earrings were made to grace a beauty like Bridget.

"Go on open it please." He urged her.

Everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves - lovers teased each other, friends bestowed gifts to each other, mates showed their love for each other.

Carrie had made a shirt for Dougan, one that he could wear on his days off. Carrie was speechless when she opened the gift for little Amelia May containing the christening outfit. She burst into tears and, holding the baby in her arms ran over to hug Joshua and Bridget her thanks. Several of the ladies also had made stuffed toys for the little baby. There were even a few gifts for Baby Lexford, mainly stuffed toys. Estelle had picked out a new pipe for Daniel and some new tobacco to go with it. He only smoked on his off time, and usually when he was thinking about a particularly tough case.

Jean was given her own doctor's bag by Doctor Brady. Marie gave Rodrick a new set of hat, scarf and matching gloves in a vibrant red to go with his black hair and dark good looks.

Smiling, Joshua laid a satin-wrapped package in front of Bridget, telling her, I hope you like it darling, not too ostentatious is it?

Her eyes opened wide in surprise. She was almost afraid to touch the gift and she hesitated as the room grew quiet. Go on open it please.

Taking a deep breath, her fingers shook a bit as she picked up the package and slowly opened it to reveal the beauty inside. Bridget gasped at the gold necklace and earring set nestled within. Tears sprang to her eyes as she looked up at her husband. Quietly she spoke, as if afraid that the beautiful set would disappear.

"Joshua! It is absolutely beautiful! My love, you...you..." She could not finish as tears of joy overcame her. Reaching out to him, he answered her with a kiss and the room smiled and ohhhed and ahhhed at the heads of the house. It took Bridget a couple of minutes to gather herself together.

Looking up, she found Pete standing at the doorway into the room. She nodded to him and he left the room as she began her story.

"Love, when we were on our honeymoon, the afternoon that Jean and I went to the seamstress there, we met a most interesting man at the dress shop. A Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks. He is Laird of Guisachan and Glenaffric and was there with his wife. You know, they have 5 children." She paused for a moment to take a breath, and Joshua seemed somewhat amused, probably wondering just where she was heading though he refrained from interrupting her.

"Anyway, he was a very interesting gentleman, even a member of parliament. Well, we began talking as he waited on his wife to finish her session. It seems that he has an interest, or maybe it was more of a passion. And once I heard about it, I thought that it was something that you needed. You were definitely lacking one, and everyone knows that it is something that any English gentleman should have."

As Bridget spoke, outside was the sound of thumping and bumping along the upstairs hall, before apparently being pushed down the stairs. The noise got louder and louder until bursting through the door was a furry bundle of enthusiasm. A golden retriever puppy ran around the room, much to the delighted squeals of the children from the orphanage, little hands reaching out to pet the puppy. But the little canine was on a mission, sniffing at everyone before finding her target and launching herself into Joshua's lap and licking his face, her little tail wagging furiously.

"We had a devil of a time keeping her hidden and quiet, which is why Pete suddenly 'took sick', in order to keep you away from where she was kept, so you would not find her. And I am sure that they had to be quite creative in taking her out to relieve herself without you seeing her. I wanted her to be your dog, so she has been sleeping on one of your old shirts. She is a new breed that the Laird has created and is striving to make popular. He calls her a Golden Retriever, and though she is named Golda, I guess that she could be renamed if you wish. She can be trained to go hunting with you when she is a bit older, and retrieve the game that you shot out of the water."

Golda promptly curled up and snuggled up against Joshua. At that moment, Rodrick nudged Dougan and Dougan spoke up.

"Uh, sire, I should also tell you that repairing the sleigh was not our idea. Several months ago, her Ladyship found the thing under a pile of furniture in the stable. It had apparently belonged to your father when he was quite young. He had courted your mother in it. She asked us to repair it as the other part of your Christmas gift."

Bridget blushed, but smiled.

The look of delight on Bridget's face as she opened her present warmed Joshua all the way through, he had bought it on impulse and had worried that Bridget might think it too much and chastise him in private but the look on her face told him that she thought it the most beautiful thing in the world.

"It's Indian you know." He managed to get out before she reached out to him and gave him the sweetest of kisses briefly worming her tongue into his mouth, underneath the table her fingers ran delicately along his half erect manhood.

He saw her nod to Pete standing in the doorway who nodded back to her and promptly left the room. Joshua was mystified and then Bridget began a short speech.

'Love, when we were on our honeymoon, the afternoon that Jean and I went to the seamstress there, we met a most interesting man at the dress shop.

'

At that moment the doors burst open and a small bundle of golden fur sniffed its way between the legs of everyone present, the children cried out in delight and scrambled to stroke it. It eventually sat in front of Joshua with its head on one side as if asking permission. Joshua unhesitatingly patted his knee and the golden bundle launched itself onto his lap, licking his face and wagging its tail furiously. Fondly he gathered its slightly drooping ears and felt the soft silkiness.

Bridget spoke up again by way of explanation.

'We had a devil of a time keeping her hidden and quiet, which is why Pete suddenly 'took sick', in order to keep you away from where she was kept, so you would not find her.
'

Joshua finally found his voice and smiled.

"Now I have two passions in my life, one here on my knees and the other sitting beside me. Be sure I will do my best to keep them both satisfied. Golda is her name and Golda she will remain."

Dougan then spoke up

Uh, sire, I should also tell you that repairing the sleigh was not our idea. Several months ago, her Ladyship found the thing under a pile of furniture in the stable. It had apparently belonged to your father when he was quite young. He had courted your mother in it. She asked us to repair it as the other part of your Christmas gift."

Joshua roared with laughter, "Did you not think that I would not work that out for myself? I thank you all for making this the best Christmas ever"

By the time that all the gifts had been opened, and everyone had found favor with their presents, Bridget glowed with enthusiasm but was quite tired. She was also in dire need of a pee. Joshua knew her well and recognized that now was the time for Bridget to take a break. Nodding to Marie, the maid left to wait for Bridget in the library. Joshua motioned to Adrian and the young man quickly picked Bridget up and soon had her safe in the chair. Adrian and Dougan took her from the lounge into the library and left. Alone with Marie and Joshua, the two helped her relieve herself and set her up on the fainting couch, wrapping her up in numerous fluffy blankets while Joshua stoked the fire to keep the room warm. The entire time, Golda sat watching these proceedings, her head cocked to one side as if wondering what the fuss was about.

Bridget was tired and was already yawning despite the baby's strong kicks. Marie quietly crept from the room. The couch was only made for one but Joshua managed to snuggle up against her as he spooned Bridget, his hand lightly rubbing her tummy and soon the baby within her quieted too. Bridget felt so safe and secure in his arms. And happy. Golda, not really seeing room for herself up there, promptly laid down on the rug in front of the fireplace and napped, just glad to no longer be confined to that upstairs room.

Bridget was soon asleep, snoring softly, and never heard Joshua's words, nor felt his kiss on the back of her neck, nor heard him and Golda quietly leave the room.

Marie kept a sharp look out for her mistress as she let herself back into the room. Meanwhile, the orphanage children all wanted to play with Golda and Rodrick and Diana took the children out to play with the puppy. She seemed to have boundless energy, running and jumping and chasing big fat snowflakes that had begun to fall slowly. The yard was filled with laughter and squeals of joy as snowball fights erupted only to be replaced with catch and catch can, stopping long enough to make a snowman family, with an obvious pregnant snowman to stand in for Lady Bridget. Some of the kids got a bit confused, asking when would Lady Lexford have the baby Jesus. Diane and Rodrick had to explain things to the children and soon all were once again playing until fingers were growing numb and noses were running. They all tromped in to peel off layers of wet cold coats and mittens and hats before the children crowded around the fire in the lounge while one of the maids served them hot chocolate. Once they had warmed up inside and out, pallets were laid out on the floor around the fireplace and soon 15 little ones were taking a nap, some of the little girls clutching their new little doll in their arms.

Meanwhile, Amelia too was tired and a bit fussy but quickly fell asleep in mother Carrie's arms. She tucked the baby in her crib while Bathsheba snuck Tony into her bedroom next door for a Christmas gift that he would surely enjoy. They quietly made love, not wanting to wake the baby next door. Golda was determined to follow Joshua around though Pete, having been around the puppy got the past couple of days, recognized that she was needing to go outside. He quickly took her outside and once she was through, took her inside to teach her where her food and water dish would sit in an obscure corner of the kitchen. Instead, Golda sat on her haunches and sniffed the air, enjoying the wonderful scents that enticed her.

Cook was busy making sure that all the food would be ready in time for the main meal. Extra tables had been set up so that the children could have one more special Christmas dinner with everyone. Though the dining room was a bit crowded, the table settings were polished and the plates and glasses and silverware covered the tabletops. Once she had suspected that there would be more guest that originally anticipated, Cook had added another goose and more roast so that there would be enough food for everyone.

When lunch was ready to be served the gong that stood in the hallway was sounded, its rich mellow tones echoing throughout the house, Adrian and Dougan fetched Bridget and lifted her into a chair at the head of the table next to Joshua. Everyone filed in and took their seats although some of the children scowled as Golda was nowhere to be seen being banned whist they were eating. Joshua was adamant on this point.

"She is untrained and we do not want any distractions, when she is older and learnt some manners we will see."

The meal was sumptuous comprising of five courses, some of the gentlemen discreetly passing wind, which was ignored as the gathering chattered, anecdotes and jokes being shared. The wine was consumed rather more rapidly than Joshua had anticipated and another case was brought up from the cellar.
All through lunch Joshua kept a careful watch on Bridget for any signs that it was too much for her but she was happy and lively her new necklace adorning her swan like
throat and earrings dangling from her petite ears.

The tables were quickly cleared and all the menservants made a stage from the three largest tables and arranged the chairs in a semi circle. steps were placed either side of the stage and after a fifteen minute interlude Estelle Pendragon sat at the piano forte and began to play.

"Silent night, Holy night,
all is calm, all is bright.
"

The words floated through the air, softly touching everyone with their significance. The girls filed onto the stage from both sides all demurely dressed in white. They finished the first Carol then launched into Once in Royal David's City, Carol after Carol all beautifully sung.

Then to everyone's great surprise Marie stepped forward unable to suppress a giggle she announced "I am claiming this one as my own."

Her mouth opened wide and the most wonderful sound came out,

"Ave Maria, Ave Mareeeea."

She stopped and giggled again

"Oi'm sorry but oi don't know any more"

This drew rapturous applause from everyone who knew what courage it must have taken.

Then it was the turn of the men, beginning with Hark The Herald Angels Sing, While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night. The whole motley choir sang their hearts out and ended with the timeless Jingle Bells. During the performance some one had made some tiny tambourines with silver paper as cymbals and handed them out among the children and they provided the perfect end to an astounding performance.

Joshua stood and clapped as loudly as anyone before he looked down to see Bridget fast asleep. He caught Dougan and Adrian's eye.
"Can you please take her upstairs and lay her on the bed, I will find Doctor Brady."

Once everyone had gathered around the dining table, Joshua had said a prayer and then the feast began. The last time that there had been such a lavish spread in this room had been at her wedding. The children sat there, their eyes shining at having such a wonderful spread before them, wishing to try a little of everything. She worried that more than one child might return to the orphanage with an upset stomach after two days of such rich food. She was sure that Mr. Tweed, the headmaster of the orphanage, and the other men and women working there probably were grateful to have the time free to spend the holidays with their families, and she resolved then and there that this would become an annual tradition. She knew that Joshua would agree with her, especially since the children coming here had originally been his idea. And through the years, it would do their children good to learn that not every child was as fortunate as they were.

She felt like a queen, sitting there wearing the beautiful set that her love had given her. He had never denied her anything, and she felt herself truly blessed. He was very attentive to her, making sure that her plate was well filled. Cook had really outdone herself, making the best Christmas goose that Bridget had ever had in her life.

Afterwards, the tables were quickly cleared and despite full stomachs, the servants managed to sing beautifully with only an occasional discreet belch or one particularly musical flatulence , though no one claimed it and all continued singing.

Marie was adorable singing her solo, her voice almost angelic, and Bridget resolved to see if the woman would like to learn all the words to 'Ava Maria' and sing the entire song next Christmas.

As the show progressed, Bridget began to get so tired. It had been a long day, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. She knew that it was not because of her, but because of the hard work of everyone here at Lexford Manor. Carrie, and Dougan and Pete and Cook and everyone! Even Joshua had gone above and beyond what was needed or expected of him.

She was not aware of falling asleep until Adrian gently lifted her to put her in the chair. She blushed at having fallen asleep in front of everyone, but Adrian and Dougan assured her that no one had really noticed as everyone was busy listening and singing.

Soon thu got her upstairs and into bed. After they left, Marie helped her used the bathroom before Joshua arrived with Doctor Brady. She looked at the Doctor and Joshua through sleepy eyes. He checked her over and pronounced both mama and baby doing great. Leaving a fresh bottle of Jean's tonic for the little mother, he told Joshua to let Bridget sleep. He also warned that the baby was now really pressing on her kidneys and that she would probably wake up several times during the night needing to pee.

"It's not romantic, but it's life, Joshua." He pet Bridget's arm and walked out talking to Joshua. Marie didn't have any arguments from her charge as she gave her the nightly dose of the tonic. As she talked to her Ladyship, telling her how much she enjoyed the day, when she turned around, Bridget was laying on her side, sound asleep. It was some time later that his Lordship came back.

Bridget only woke up twice during the night needing to pee.

Boxing Day dawned bright and sunny the snow ceased falling and in the more sheltered spots began to melt. For the household it was a busy time making everything slick and span after the Christmas celebrations which had continued long into the night. Carrie supervised the sweeping, polishing and wiping, several of the girls had headaches due to the imbibing of too much alcohol to which they weren't accustomed but Carrie made no allowances, making sure everyone did their fair share.
Dougan delegated the men to clearing the courtyard of snow then he and Brian gathered the orphans together beside the sleigh and asked them to sing one last Carol to thank Joshua and Bridget for a wonderful Christmas. Joshua heard them gathering and helped Bridget to the window so she could listen and wave to them.
"God rest ye merry gentlemen"
Wafted up to them and the children climbed onto the sleigh clutching their new dolls and farmyard animals, then they were gone.
"The place seems empty without them my love." Joshua murmured as Bridget rested her head on his shoulder. He soon had her tucked up in bed again and just sat beside her holding her hand.

The next few days before New Year went by with Joshua taking time to house train Golda who soon understood what was acceptable and what was not.
Early in the evening of New Year's Eve Joshua took Bridget for her evening walk along the landing when Bridget stumbled and looked down at the floor, Joshua's eyes followed her gaze and he saw a puddle of water at her feet,
"SOMEONE, FETCH DOCTOR BRADY, QUICKLY NOW!" He bellowed and he scooped Bridget up in his arms and carried her to bed.
Leslie and Jean soon arrived and took charge of matters,
"She is going to give birth soon Joshua, you can stay for now but when we get to the business end you must wait outside."
Bridget looked so pale it almost broke his heart, what ifs crept into his mind but he shook them off, he had complete faith in Leslie, had he not predicted that this might happen?
Bridget's contractions continued to increase until Leslie announced "She is close now Joshua, time for you to wait outside."
He just had time to kiss Bridget and say "Next time I see you we will be Mamma and Pappa."
Then Jean ushered him out of the door and he was bombarded with questions from the crowd waiting outside.

Bridget loved having the manor filled with children, the sound of laughter filling the place. They really were very well behaved and if one of them broke a figurine or dirtied the rug with soiled shoes, they would start to cry, afraid of being punished and sent back early to the orphanage. Bridget would ask that the 'little one' be brought to her bedside where she would play and talk to them until they would leave her all smiles and giggles.

Soon it was time for them to return to the orphanage and she was touched as they stood beside the sleigh and sang one last Christmas Carol to them while she and Joshua waved at them from the bedroom window. The place was awfully quiet after they left.

Then, early New Year's Eve, while Joshua walked her in the hallway, she felt a whoosh as if she had wet herself. She looked down and saw the carpet soaked around her feet. Joshua recognized what was happening and quickly picked her up, carrying to bed. This time, the pains did not go away by changing positions and the Doctor confirmed that the baby was coming. Joshua sat right beside the bed, holding her hand and encouraging her with words of love. Each time the pains would start, she would squeeze his hand and try not to scream, for she knew that this was just the beginning.

Over the hours, her contractions gradually grew closer and closer. She was not even aware of who all was in the room. She just focused on Joshua and her love for him. Until eventually, the Doctor told him that he would have to leave.

He bent over and kissed her gently, whispering, Next time I see you we will be Mamma and Pappa.

And then he left and the Doctor and Jean began to set to work. Carrie was suddenly here, holding her hand and giving her tips on how to get through this. Without Joshua there, she was thankful for Carrie as the first hard labor pains ripped through her and she gave a cry, unaware of whether she could be heard on the other side of the door. The baby was quite large and after an hour, Bridget's periodic cries could still be heard. Marie could see that each sound was tearing the Master apart and he looked as if her were about to go in and take charge. She stood between him and the door.

"No, soir, ye'll not be goin' dere. Me Aunt Grace was in 'eavy labour fer seven 'ours. Each woman and each baby is different. Doctor Brady cannot take care of you and the mother and the baby. Right now, you are the least important of the three." And she stood with her arms crossed before motioning for Dougan, having gone through this most recently, to stay with Joshua until the new father was needed.

"Okay, Bridget, time for you to deliver your baby." Carrie got behind Bridget's back while Jean placed one of Bridget's feet against her own shoulder. Bridget's other foot went against Bathsheba's shoulder.

"Bridget, push!"

Each cry from the other side of the door tore at Joshua's heart strings and he wanted nothing more than to be beside Bridget's side, holding and squeezing her hand but Marie's wise words made sense, he would only be in the way.

Dougan was also a tower of strength counting the time between each cry, "They be the contractions Joshua, the closer together they are the closer Mistress Bridget's time is."

"I don't want her in pain Dougan, surely they can ease her pain?"

"Oi'm certain they will not let her suffer unnecessarily, Jean may well administer a small dose of Laudanum."

The scream when it came, though not unexpected, took everyone by surprise, coming as it did on the first stroke of midnight. By the time the twelfth stroke was reached the sound of a baby crying came through the door, the door opened and Bridget sat upright amongst her pillows cradling a noisy, wrinkled, red faced bundle.

"Don't keep me in suspense a moment longer is it a boy or a girl?"

At that very moment the newborn chose to release the gasses that had built up

"Sounds very much like a boy to me." Chuckled Joshua as he sat down beside Bridget holding her hand and the baby's fingers clutched one of his.

Leslie stepped forward and said in all sincerity,

"It is said in some parts of the country that the first born that arrives within the twelve strikes of the clock on New Year's Day is destined for greatness."

Surprisingly, it was at the stroke of midnight that Bridget gave the final big push that brought forth little Matthew Aaron Lexford into the world. She fell back among the pillows, exhausted and yet overjoyed. Her own child. Hers and Joshua's baby. As Doctor Brady waited for the afterbirth, Jean and Bathsheba cleaned up the squalling baby and Matthew tested his lungs in this new world. Carrie helped clean up Bridget and remove the soiled linen. Soon Bridget was cleaned and dressed in a clean gown before little Matthew was placed in her arms and the little one quieted down.

"I suspect that Joshua is about to tear the door off its hinges for want of knowing if he has a boy or a girl. And to make sure that you are all right, of course." The Doctor gave a chuckle as he checked on last time, making sure that all looked presentable to the new father and the crowd waiting outside the door. Bridget looked tired but happy with the baby in her arms and all signs of the ordeal were gone save the smell. A fact of life.

Opening the door, Joshua fairly burst through, pausing long enough to ask the Doctor, Don't keep me in suspense a moment longer is it a boy or a girl?

Bridget felt and smelled little Matthew's timely flatulence into the room and Joshua answer himself with Sounds very much like a boy to me.

"Say hello to Matthew Aaron Lexford, Pappa." She smiled at him as he rushed to her side. He held her hand and Matthew, with tiny fingers, reached out to clutch one of his Daddy's fingers. She looked at Joshua and saw tears in his eyes as he smiled down at his new little son.

It is said in some parts of the country that the first born that arrives within the twelve strikes of the clock on New Year's Day is destined for greatness.

She kissed the baby's head before asking Joshua, "Would you like to hold him as you present him to the assembled out in the hall? The new heir of Lexford." She knew that there was tradition and she wanted to give him that right.

The Doctor told him that later on he would need to talk to him as Bridget carefully handed the baby off to his Pappa. She was happy but exhausted and was already starting to drift off to sleep.

Carrie slipped out to go feed Amelia May, the baby fussing as if already aware that she was no longer the only one demanding attention in the house.

Once again, the house was coming alive as a new generation of Lexfords were inhabiting within its walls. As Bridget drifted off to sleep, she smiled. She wanted the house to eventually be filled with joy and laughter, from old and young alike.

Just as Bridget was handing the precious bundle to Joshua Golda began to demand attention, winding her way between his legs. Joshua looked down and said sternly, more in hope than conviction, "NO, GOLDA SIT!"

To his great surprise she sat on her haunches wagging her tail vigorously,

"Good girl Golda"

He cradled Matthew in his arms and stepped out into the hallway where everyone was gathered, servant girls, menservants, guests, all wanting to see the new arrival, Joshua looked at the sea of eager excited faces and cleared his throat,

Friends,,,,,,,,,,,,,, for that is what you are, every one of you, I must apologise for disturbing your revelry but we had a very important person arrive on the stroke of midnight. May I introduce the future heir of Lexford Manor, MATTHEW AARON LEXFORD.
Charge your glasses please and we'll drink a toast to him.
"

As he was making his speech Joshua held the babe above his head so everyone could see. The blanket he was wrapped in fell open and revealed his baby parts causing one woman to exclaim,

"Would you look at that husband dear? He has outgrown you already"

Those that heard tittered into their glasses and toasted Joshua's newborn son.

Joshua tucked Matthew back in his blanket and handed him to Bathsheba who took him eagerly, cooing over her new charge. Carrie volunteered to give her own milk if Bridget was not up to it saying,

"Dougan will 'ave t' make do wiv cow's milk."

Joshua went back to Bridget who was sleeping peacefully, he bent and kissed her forehead "Thankyou for everything my darling"

He sat in a comfortable chair to sleep until Bridget woke.

There was a light knock on the bedroom door before Carrie stuck her head in the room, looking at Joshua as he stirred.

"T'ere's a certain young man t'at is demanding 'is first meal. T'at is, if..."

She didn't have time to finish before Bridget woke up and yawning, told Carrie, "Ask Bathsheba to bring him in." Carrie nodded, understanding. As she sat up, resting back among the bed pillows, Bridget unbuttoned her gown. Her breast felt very heavy and in need of relief.

Matthew could be heard before he actually entered the bedroom in his nanny's arms. His little fist waved in the air, his face was red and screwed up as he cried. But once he was in Bridget's arms and she pressed her teat to his mouth, he promptly hushed and began to suck hungrily.

Bathsheba explained to Joshua. "It's really best t'at 'is first couple uv meals come from mama if possible. She 'as that pre-milk. And," the Nanny looked at Bridget, "Mafew is a bit larger than Amelia and may be 'ungrier. If yew needs, just switch 'im ta the other teat."

After the baby was full, Bathsheba draped a towel over the Master's shoulder and showed him the best way to burp the baby while she helped her Ladyship clean her breast and teats. Once the baby had burped, she picked up the little master, telling Joshua that the Doctor was needing to talk with Joshua as soon as he was awake. Bridget was still tired and reached a hand out to her husband. Pulling him to her, she gave him a sweet and loving kiss.

"I hope that you are happy, my love, for I know that I am truly happy. I am so blessed. And we now are three. This is the start of a new generation. I wonder if your father ever would have thought that it would happen like this. You know, I met him that once and he was so sweet to me."

She kissed him again before she watched Joshua head out to find the Doctor. In less than a minute she was sound asleep.

*****

"Well, how do you like being a new Pappa?"

The Doctor shook Joshua's hand and slapped him on the back. He grinned at the new father.

"I had this same talk with Dougan about Carrie." He took a deep breath before he began.

"Bridget will be tired for several days and may sleep a lot. If she wants to walk, by all means let her though for the first couple of days, you may want to stay nearby until she gets her strength back. I have to tell you that Bridget will not be able to have intercourse for about 2 months. She is sore and she will probably not really want to. I promise you that this is normal. Just ask Dougan. The two of you can commiserate together. Just take things easy and enjoy your new baby boy." Grinning, he stood up. "I'll check on her in the morning. And then Jean and I will be heading back to my house." He shook Joshua's hand again. "And once again, congratulations!"

Grinning, he headed upstairs where Jean awaited him in bed.

Over the next couple of days, gradually the holiday guest headed home. Estelle saw Daniel once more before he was busy with work, seeing less of her than he cared but all things take time. Jean and Doctor Brady headed home, with Jean picking up her studies and the Doctor occasionally would return to the Manor to check on his patients, both babies and mothers, and found all doing well.

Meanwhile, Golda began to fit in beautifully into her new home. And she seems to take to the babies, in particular to Matthew. And Matthew seemed to love to play with the puppy. Bridget would sit on the floor with the baby and little Matthew would coo and squeal as the puppy would wag her tail and lick the baby's fingers. And the dog seemed to learn quickly as she grew, turning out to be a great fit to the family.

And so, life at Lexford Manor settled into a routine, if any house with children can ever have a routine day.
