Seduced by the Squire (closed for cumnchat)

Isaac watched the contest between the two naked girls eagerly watching them biting and gouging, cheering loudly when one gained an advantage over the other and cheered again when the advantage was overturned. The two girls gave everything they had to avoid the flogging promised to the loser and the night of comfort in Isaac's bed to the victor instead of the straw mattress they usually slept on.
Eventually one ran out of steam and was sat upon face down in the mud. The victor raised her arm in triumph and looked towards Isaac for approval. Isaac nodded his approval , the winner was the one he had favoured from the beginning, a statuesque blonde now covered head to toe in grey simy mud that slid down her voluptuous body and dripped from her engorged nipples that had been excited by the contest.

"Get cleaned up and wait for me in my bedchamber. we'll see if there is any fight left in you."

The blonde smiled ad spoke out of turn, "We have met before sir but you wouldn't recognise me as the only view you had of me was my arse, which I believe you enjoyed immensely."

Isaac merely snorted and turned to a valet who came to him to deliver a letter.

A smile crept over his face as he read,

'Isaac, I am not going to pretend that I write this with a glad heart but I am in desperate need of more funds so following our agreement regarding Miss Sweetwater, if you could call on me at your earliest convenience to discuss you perhaps taking her for a weekend or longer at terms to be agreed.
Your cousin Joshua Lexford
'

"I most certainly will call on you Joshua, I have unfinished business with the delectable Bridget." he muttered gleefully to himself.

He almost ran up the staircase to his bed chamber where the statuesque blonde lay spread on the bed ready for him.

The valet Joshua chose to follow Dougan was a skilled poacher able to track rabbits and fowl without being spotted so following the guileless Dougan was child's play to him. After only half a mile he knew where Dougan was headed and took a short cut to the disused hunting lodge and was gratified to see smoke coming from the chimney and then Carrie came out to throw some ash onto some waste ground. He slipped round the back and peered through the grimy window and saw Bridget huddled among her blankets, shivering uncontrollably.

On returning to the front he saw Carrie on her knees servicing Dougan voraciously. She completed quickly and said sternly,

"Dougan I too wish that we could pleasure each other fully but Miss Bridget needs me far more than you do, so that will have to do for now.

Silas, for that was the poacher's name ran back to the Manor as quickly as he could to deliver the news to Joshua and Estelle.

Carrie checked on Miss Bridget later in the day. The woman should be up and feeling somewhat better. Instead, Bridget was asleep and something did not look right. It took her a minute to realize what it was. Miss Bridget's face was flushed and she was shivering under the covers.

Rushing to her side, she could hear Bridget's breath rattling around in her chest. Upon touching the sick woman's forehead, the flushed skin was hot and sweaty.

Apparently, after being beaten all day and night, her system was stressed. Despite it being May, the rain yesterday had been unseasonably cold and when Miss Bridget had been tied to the wagon wheel, nude, she must have caught pneumonia. She searched for more blankets but there were none. Finally, she added Bridget's cape, laying it out like a blanket over the shivering girl.

She longed to get the woman into her own bed back home, where there was a fire in her room and a doctor could be called. Carrie and Dougan had not money for a doctor.

Bridget fell into a deep sleep and Carrie began to worry. She didn't dare leave the woman alone but something needed to be done. She would ask Dougan what they should do. But he would not be there until later in the day.

Silas returned post haste to the Manor and burst in on Joshua to deliver his news.

"You were right Sir, Miss Bridget is at the old hunting lodge wiv Carrie but Miss Bridget don't look too good Sir, I'm afeard she's ill , very ill

Joshua immediately decided to go to Bridget's side, to be certain that she would have the best attention he sent one of the servants to fetch the family doctor and instruct him to go straight to the hunting lodge.

Carrie was sitting with Bridget when he arrived and he brushed her aside and tried to sit Bridget up, not knowing of her bruised and battered body, but when she whimpered in pain he became distraught and looked accusingly at Carrie.

"Why did you not bring her home as I said? She needs a doctor no thanks to you.

Carrie burst into tears at his accusation.

"But it were wot she wanted Sir, she sed not to say owt t'yew. If I'd known 'ow ill she was we wud've brought straight 'ome, honest we wud Sir."

After his initial out burst Joshua realised how unfair it was to blame Carrie and Dougan so he smoothed things over,

"I understand Carrie, you both did what you thought was right, but you should have told me, I have been losing my mind fretting at the thought of Bridget being in his bed of her own choice."

Carrie decided that Joshua should know the truth and began by saying,

"Yew don't know the 'arf of it Sir, That MISTER Crabbe he,,,,,,, well he ,,,,,,, "

She trailed off unable to continue. Just then the Doctor arrived, he took one look at Bridget shivering under the blankets and declared,

"Upon my soul this young lady needs a proper bed and lots of broth and fluids, we can only hope that we are in time."

"Hope we are in time? what do you mean? Surely she can't die?"

Joshua cried out in anguish and Carrie began crying again.

"What about her wounds and bruises doctor? Can you give her somefink to ease her pain?"

This was the first Joshua had heard of Bridget's wounds and he demanded to see the extent of Bridget's beating.

"'Tis no wonder she didn't want to come home and face me, she must blame me as I blame myself but Carrie you must tell me all that you know, now is not the time or place, come to the library after supper when you have finished tending to Bridget and bring Dougan with you, I want to know every detail."

Carrie smiled radiantly when Joshua said she was to continue looking after Bridget,

"That we will Sir, every sordid detail, it won't be pleasant but you have to know so this mess can be sorted out."

Voices swirled around Bridget, though none of them pierced through her unconscious state. They were merely sounds that drifted in the fog, having no substance or meaning. She kept hearing Isaac, with his cruel laugh and the belt, beating her till she wanted to scream. Isaac, beating the soles of her feet. And the looks of his servants, the pity in their eyes as they knew all too well what this poor girl was going through. Her fever continued to climb.

*****

It was with great care and a sense of urgency that Miss Bridget was quickly transported back to the manor. Carrie was relieved that the master was taking charge. She could see that he was worried about the Miss and the fact that the doctor was here was a great comfort. She was not well versed in the medicinal arts and knew that she was out of her depths.

The look on Dougan's face when they all turned up at the house immediately worried her. She could see that his face had paled and she quickly ran to him, explaining what had happened and that they were to tell the Master everything later in his study.

As Miss Bridget was carried up the stairs by a very concerned Master Lexford, the doctor called to Carrie to attend. Once Miss Bridget had been laid in her own bed, Carrie was left alone with the doctor so that she could tell him what had happened to Miss Bridget, explaining each cut and bruise and wound on the poor girl.

"Tsk tsk tsk. This looks like the work of Mr. Isaac Crabbe. I've had to mend many of his servants from wounds such as this. I fear that she has pneumonia and it twill be a battle between us and Death as to whether she lives or not. Quick, run down to the kitchen and bring some broth - and just the broth - back up here. You will occasionally put a drop or two on her lips so that she may hopefully lick it off."

As Carrie left, she ran into Dougan in the hall and told him what the Doctor said. When Cook had heard what had happened to Miss Bridget, she had already started the broth and had it ready when Carrie came down.

All afternoon, Carrie stayed with the Doctor, taking care of the poor thing. He show the young woman what to do once he left, how to dress her wounds and how to feed her. The poor thing never woke though she would from time to time moan and they had to change her gown twice as she literally drenched it and the Doctor was afraid she would get a chill sleeping in wet clothes. Finally, the fever broke and besides, he had received word that Mrs. Thrush had gone into labor and the baby didn't want to come. The Doctor spoke briefly to the Master before heading off to deliver the new life.

Carrie sat with her Mistress, carefully giving her the medicine, changing and checking bandages. The raw skin around her neck, wrists and ankles looked bad and Carrie hoped that they would not leave scars on the beauty's skin once they healed.

When it came time to go to Master Lexford's study with her husband to tell him everything, she got one of the parlor maids, a girl named Jean, to sit with Miss Bridget, and to come get her immediate if anything happened.

After Bridget was tucked up in the bed in which they had shared so many happy hours Joshua wanted to stay by her side but the Doctor shooed him away saying that too many people was no good for her and he had her wounds to dress as well as monitor the pneumonia, but he hovered just outside the door and heard the Doctor tell Carrie that he had tended many of Isaac's female staff with similar injuries which got him thinking, just what was going on at Isaac's house and what sort of man could treat women like that?

Every hour or so he went to where Bridget was sleeping to get a progress report on Bridget. The Doctor had been called away to attend a difficult birth but had given Carrie detailed instructions on how to care for her including changing the sheets regularly and her nightclothes. Before he left he spoke briefly to Joshua and reassured him that the fever had broken but her wounds would take quite some time to heal. Joshua became agitated at this and challenged the Doctor to explain why he had not reported Isaac to the authorities for his treatment of his female staff. The Doctor looked uncomfortable at this and confessed,
"I once treated a young girl with terrible wounds and unfortunately she did not recover, the treatment before she passed away was very expensive and when it came to payment Isaac offered me the company of one of his maids for a whole week, with my being a bachelor and a doctor my opportunities to relieve my tensions are limited so I accepted his offer and he has held it over me ever since, claiming he has witnesses who will swear that I abducted the poor girl."

"So basically you are a fool and a coward" Joshua blazed at him.

After the Doctor left Carrie tended Bridget and allowed Joshua to look in on Bridget but with strict instructions not to wake her.

The time for Carrie and Dougan to tell their story approached, Joshua steeled himself for what he knew would be a painful ordeal but was determined to find out everything he could.

Carrie held onto Dougan's hand outside of the Master's study. She was nervous, and she could tell that her husband was pale and apprehensive. She felt him squeeze her fingers.

"Luv, there's sume fings that I 'aven't told ya that yull 'ear."

He nodded and knocked on the door before they entered. They found the Master inside, looking pained and worried.

Dougan spoke first.

"Before my wife tell you of the more intimate information, I should tell you of how we found Miss Bridget. When we arrived, we were made to wait in the foyer. One of the maids mentioned something about how he had her in the dungeon. Carrie remembered from when he kidnapped her. We were then told that Miss Bridget was outside but since she was nude, we would have to be nude too to rescue her. We stripped and went outside. In the cold rain, he had her tied nude to a wagon wheel and had his entire staff standing around her watching her. While I untied poor Miss Bridget, Carrie climbed in the wagon and I handed the Miss up to her before going back indoors to gather all our clothes."

Carrie spoke up. "Dougan got mad at them an' yelled at tha servants. But Miss Bridget told me that Mister Crabbe does tha same fings to 'is own servants. She said that they are terrified uv 'im."

She could see that he was shocked and angered. She took a deep breath and began telling him of the 24 hours of hell that Miss Bridget had endured. She watched him turn pale, and at one point she feared that he would be sick, but he continued to listen.

As she finished, she told him, "One uv tha ferst t'angs I did wuz give 'er tha tea. Jest ta be safe. Miss Bridget tole me that Mister Crabbe is sumpthin called a sedist that 'urts peoples. She sed that she 'erd that werd frum Mrs. Pendragon."

She looked over at her Dougan and thought that he too was appalled at all that Miss Bridget had endured.

When Joshua heard all that Carrie and Dougan could tell him he dismissed them and sank into his chair in deep despondency.
'It's all my fault, my need for money and allowing Bridget to 'earn' it the way she had even though that had been my original intention, I'd had no way of knowing that I would fall so deeply in love with her or that Isaac would treat her so cruelly.'
The self recriminations kep running through his head, the chances were that Bridget would hate him for what he had done so if he wanted her back he would have to convince her that he loved her above all else.

As the evening wore on he went to see how Bridget was, as usual Carrie was there bathing Bridget's brow with a cold compress to keep her temperature down.
"T' Mistress is a little better Sir, the doctor sed 'er fever 'as broken so she is outa danger, thank the Lord."

"All thanks to you Carrie, you and Dougan acted so promptly once you realised how ill she was, I will watch over her while you get some rest."

Reluctantly Carrie left them alone together but watched from the doorway at how Joshua gently kissed Bridget's brow and held her hand as he pulled up a chair to sit at her bedside. Carrie could see how much Joshua cared for Bridget and knowing how Bridget loved Joshua she resolved to bang their heads together if they didn't resolve their differences.
During the night Joshua dozed but was twice woken by Bridget's screams, he quickly squeezed her hand.

"Shush, my love, I am here, go back to sleep."

Bridget seemed to hear him and went back to sleep.

Dawn broke with the sun peeping above the horizon , a beautiful start to the day.
Joshua woke bleary eyed and was overjoyed to see Bridget sleeping peacefully no longer rasping breaths but a beautiful contented snore through her pert button nose.

He rang the bell for Carrie who must have been waiting outside the door as she was there before the ding of the bell had died away.

"Bridget seems so much better this morning Carrie, I'll leave you to wash her and brush her hair, I know she is in good hands."

Joshua had a suspicion that Isaac would put in an appearance today with the expectation of striking a deal for Bridget to be his 'guest' for a weekend and to gloat over how Bridget had enjoyed her stay. He prepared for Isaac's visit carefully, positioning the chairs exactly as he wanted them in his study and sat down to wait.

Bridget was in hell! Isaac stood over her, beating her breast and her sex and laughing, telling her that she was his over and over, until she couldn't take the pain any longer and she screamed. Through the fog of pain, she heard a voice, one she loved and recognized.

Shush, my love, I am here, go back to sleep.

He hadn't forgotten about her! Just the sound of his voice calmed her and she fell back into a deep sleep.

*****

Carrie had finally had a chance to sleep in her husband's arms, after a somewhat welcomed fuck. They had both enjoyed it, as well as the subsequent sleep that had come. It had been tempting to sleep a bit late, so comfortable it was to be in her own bed in her husband's arms. But, she was still worried about Miss Bridget.

The sun was peeking in through the drapes as she checked in on Miss Bridget and the Master. Miss Bridget seemed to be sleeping so much easier then she had the days before. And the Master dozed in the chair by her bed, holding her hand as they both softly snored. She closed the door and leaned against the door frame, saying a little prayer that everything turned out okay.

With her hand still on the doorknob, she heard the ring of the bell. She opened the door to see a very tired Master Lexford looking at the Missus with so much love.

Bridget seems so much better this morning Carrie, I'll leave you to wash her and brush her hair, I know she is in good hands.

She smiled at him and gave a little bob.

"Yes sire."

She rang and when Jean answered the call, Carrie asked that hot water be brought up. She knew that by the time it got upstairs it would be the perfect temperature to bathe Miss Bridget in. She wanted to get Missus cleaned up and looking good when the Doctor arrived to check on her. She wanted to show the Doctor and the Master that she could take care of her Mistress.

She undressed her charge. The poor thing had lost quite a bit of weight and would need to be fattened up. She sponged her off, redressed her wounds and put a salve on the bruises before she put a fresh gown on her, then combed Miss Bridget's hair. She had broth brought up and fed her as she had been, dribbling it on her lips for Bridget to lick it off in her sleep. It was slow work but it at least got food in the woman.

Downstairs, the front doorbell rang and Dougan headed for the door.

Before nine of the clock Doctor Brady arrived to check on Bridget and and see if her wounds were healing well. He spoke to Joshua informing him that the fever was now under control and her wounds were healing nicely and probably wouldn't scar.
As luck would have it Jean, the young maid was bringing some fresh warm water for Carrie and met Doctor Brady on the stairs.

"Good morning Jean, I wasn't aware that you worked here."

Jean blushed and looked at the floor,

"Mornin' Doctor I bin 'ere just free months now. since oi got away from Mister Crabbe."

Jean mumbled to the floor, afraid to look at the man who had made love to her for a whole week at Mister Crabbe's insistence and he had made her so proud when he said how well she had pleased him.

"Jean, I lay no blame at your door but Crabbe has made it plain that if I told the authorities of his nefarious activities he would ruin me by claiming that I abducted you and raped you and you would testify to this, is it true?"

"If it had come to that oi wudn't 'ave 'ad no choice, if oi'd said the truff 'e wud've beat me senseless."

"And now you are free of him would you stand in court and tell the truth?"

"Yes sir oi wud, you were so gud to me, 'twas t'appiest week o' me loife you don't deserve t'ave that 'angin' over yer 'ead."

Doctor Brady beamed and told Jean to come and tell Joshua everything.

"Wonderful,,, Wonderful, I do believe we have him now, all we have to do is wait for him to walk into the trap."

Joshua enthused and smiled with happiness for the first time in days.

The wait for Isaac's expected arrival was nerve wracking and Joshua went over everything in his head. The doorbell rang and Dougan answered the door , ungraciously saying,

"Oh it's you, you'd better come in t' Master is in t' study,"

Isaac swaggered into the study confidently, pulling off his gloves.

"What? No Miss Bridget? I would have thought she would have been here and keen to discuss the terms of her next visit."

He sat in the chair that Joshua indicated and waited for Joshua to speak, which he did eventually as he pointed a pistol at Isaac's head,

"Can you give me one good reason why I should not blow your brains out here and now Isaac?"

Isaac's face drained of colour and he stammered,

"I,,,, I,,, I,,, er,,,, whatever you have been told is a,,a,, a damned lie, true, the merchandise ,,erm that is Bridget, may be slightly damaged but she was disputing the terms of our agreement and needed to,, to be reminded "

"REMINDED? You call beating her half to death, reminding her?"

Joshua exploded in rage at Isaac's off handedness,

"Then there is the matter of chaining her outside naked in freezing rain and forcing my servants to undress before they were allowed to free her."

"But they were muddy and the kitchen floor was freshly scrubbed."

Isaac replied rather lamely.

"There is more Isaac, it concerns Doctor Brady, you are acquainted with him I believe?"

"Yes I know of him, a country quack I am led to believe"

"A country quack you say yet you allow him to repair the girls that you damage and pay him with loaning one to him for a week?"

"NO... NO.. That is wrong, one girl was ill and died and when I refused to pay his extortionate fee he kidnapped one of the maids and used her for a week before returning her. She will swear to this but she has left my employ and disappeared."

"Yes, Jean, that is her name, now works for me and she is prepared to tell the truth of the matter in court"

Isaac looked defeated and begged Joshua,

"What can I do? I will be ruined if this gets out, I can cancel your mortgage Joshua, I swear I'll never harm another woman."

"No Isaac that is not enough you will pay publicly for your crimes, a messenger is even now on his way to the authorities to lay charges, I think that your household will tell the truth also, YOU ARE FINISHED,,,,,,,,, NOW GET OUT!! "

Everything was incredibly quiet. She had expected the sound of Carrie working in the next room. And warm! She felt toasty warm! She moved a bit and pain shot through her body. Without realizing it, she gave a moan of pain.

"Miss Bridget? Can yew 'ear me?"

She recognized dear Carrie's voice and slowly opened her eyes. And panicked! She was back home! He would want to send her back to his evil cousin again come next month when he couldn't pay the mortgage! They had promised her! Her eyes filled with tears as she tried to speak.

"You...you...promissss....promised!" How could Carrie and Dougan betray her. They had seen for themselves just how cruelly Mister Crabbe had treated her.

"Miss, yew were v'ry sick! Yew 'ad n'monia an' almost died! Tha Master, 'e wuz sick wid worry an' found us. 'ad yew bot back 'ome were tha doctor's taken care uv yew."

Bridget began to cry. Was this what her life had become. A pawn to be used and abused.

She watched Carrie cross to the door and opened it, speaking to someone just outside.

"Tell 'im she jest woke up!"

"Yes, 'em." She heard the sound of a woman speak before running off down the hall.

Carrie closed the door and returned to her mistresses side.

"'e's been so werried 'bout yew. Stayed by yer side all night. 'e luvs yew, Miss."

All Bridget could do was cry, tears running down her cheeks. She still hurt to move and now she was weak from being sick. She would never be able to run away. She just knew that as soon as she would recover, the mortgage would become due again. And this time, Isaac would probably kill her.

Joshua didn't love her. He loved what she could do for him.

Joshua's heart lifted with joy when the maid gave him the news that Bridget was awake, he bounded up the stairs and into the bedchamber seeing his beautiful Bridget sitting up in bed looking pale and wan and somewhat thinner than before. He took her hand in his and stroked it gently, his eyes full of love. He was so overcome with emotion that he did not notice that Bridget tried to withdraw her hand from his and looked at him with cold eyes and a distasteful look on her face.
Carrie saw that things were not going well and intervened,

"Miss Bridget is not fully recovered yet an' needs t'rest Sir, p'raps if you come back later an' give 'er the good news."

Joshua was bursting to tell Bridget the news about Isaac's impending ruin and disgrace but saw the sense in Carrie's words so he reluctantly took his leave of Bridget, disappointed that she did not offer her lips to him to kiss, instead he kissed her still cold clammy forehead and returned to the study where Dougan, Doctor Brady and for some unknown reason, Silas, were gathered.

"A fine morning's work by Jove, let us drink a toast to the ruin of Isaac Crabbe.

Joshua enthused, pouring generous measures of his finest Brandy for each of them. They were on their third glass when there was a kerfuffle at the front door and the sound of raised voices.

"Dougan, run along and find out what all the fuss is about."

Dougan tipped his hand to his forehead in salute,

"Yes Sir, I won't be long."

He returned fifteen minutes later his face as white as a sheet.

"What is it Dougan ? Is it Carrie, Bridget are they alright?"

"They's alright Sir but it's Mister Crabbe 'e's dead Sir and they suspect foul play"

Bridget lay propped up amongst the pillows, her energy all but expended with that simple task. Carrie had called for more broth, but this time with as small pieces of chicken and vegetables as Cook could dice. Carrie could see that the poor thing had broken out with a sheen of perspiration and was clicking over her charge when the Master burst into the room, bounding across to the bed.

Master Lexford was happy, holding and stroking Miss Bridget's hand as he kissed it and cooed over the Missus, but Carrie noted how Miss Bridget appeared afraid and snatched her hand away from him. And to say that Miss Bridget was not happy was an understatement.

Trying to calm things down, she spoke.

Miss Bridget is not fully recovered yet an' needs t'rest Sir, p'raps if you come back later an' give 'er the good news.

Carrie noted the cringe that Miss Bridget made when the Master kissed Bridget's forehead. Once they were alone, she went and sat beside her Mistress.

Bridget looked at Carrie, feeling deceived and betrayed. It was hard for her to talk, and what little she said exhausted her. Her voice was soft, and Carrie had to strain to catch all her words.

"You promised me. Carrie, I trusted you. You know what that foul man did to me. You and Dougan saw with your own eyes just how cruel that man can be."

"Oi know, but yew was sick, Miss Bridget. Yew was dying an' needed a doctor. Then the Master figured where yew was. 'e was worried sick 'bout yew."

"You don't understand. He plans to prostitute me to his friends, to raise money. I read what he wrote. He will loan me next month again to Mister Crabbe, to pay for the mortgage again. And it will kill me. Why did you save me? So I can do this all again? I can't."

And with that, Bridget began to cry. Carrie worried that Miss Bridget would make herself sick again. She spent some time calming the young lady down before the upset Bridget finally cried herself exhausted. Once she was asleep, Carrie called Jean in the room to watch the poor thing while she went in search of the Master. She needed to talk to him alone. She couldn't believe that he would do something so awful.

The study was stunned into silence at the news, Joshua the first to recover,

"They cannot say that one of us murdered Charles or even accidentally did him harm , we were all here all the time,,,,,,,,,,,, except for you Silas, where were you and why are you here now?"

Silas shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other,

"I's bin out in t'woods 'tis true but I ain't done nuffink Sir.

"I or rather WE, believe you Silas but did you see anyone that might have done it?"

Again Silas shuffled his feet and looked at the floor,

"If'n oi did t'wud serve no good purpose to punish 'em 'cos it were an accident , oi saw it wiv me own eyes."

"It would be best if you told us all you know Silas, then we can decide what steps we should take."

"Mighty big ones to distance yourself from me, for I am the one who despatched Mister Crabbe into the next world."
Estelle Pendragon stood in the doorway impassively, but then continued,

"As Silas said, it was an accident but I feel no sorrow at his parting, just regret that it was so quick, for if any man deserved to suffer, that monster did."

As she spoke tears began to roll down her cheeks and Silas handed her a slightly grubby handkerchief for which she thanked him and dabbed her eyes.

"But WHY would you want to even speak to the man? You barely knew him so far as I am aware."

asked Joshua, his mind in a whirl.

"Ah Joshua my dear boy there is much you do not know about me including the fact that I once had a sister, Doctor Brady met her just the once and although he did his very best he could not save her, that creature had beaten her so badly. He has never shown any remorse for that and I just wanted him to show some kind thought for her. As I stepped out to halt his horse I tripped on a tree root and the pistol went off and got him clean between the eyes, OH MY, the look of surprise on his face was divine. "

As usual Joshua was the first to react, he swore the others to secrecy and told them that they were each other's alibi.

Estelle took hold of Silas's arm and declared him her hero and asked him how she could repay him.
Silas blushed as he replied,

"Wivout wishin' to seem too forward ma'am oi've bin 'oldin' a torch for you for some years now so oi'd like a kiss ,,,,,, on the lips if it pleases you."

Estelle threw her head back and laughed heartily,

You are indeed forward, but a plain speaker who states what he wants, I like that in a man so come to my room this evening after you have eaten, in the meantime, savour this."

and she threw her arms around Silas's neck and kissed him soundly.

Joshua watched the newly matched couple and felt a pang of jealousy, aware that his love life was hanging in the balance.

Carrie knocked on the study doors before they were opened from the inside by her husband. She stood there surprised at the collection of persons gathered within. The Master stood behind his desk. The Doctor sat over on the couch. Mrs. Pendragon and Silas stood across on the other side. And Dougan stood there at the door, his hand still on the doorknob.

Carrie looked confused for a second before looking at the man behind the desk.

"Sir, Oi needs t'speak t'ya a moment, in private."

She could see his worry about Miss Bridget and quickly sought to assure him that the lady was fine, just sleeping.

The Doctor declared something about checking on his patient, and Mrs. Pendragon left with the Doctor, saying that she had heard that Bridget was ill and came to check on her. Silas mumbled something about getting back to work and, with a tug of his forelock, slipped his hat back on and left.

Dougan merely gave his wife a puzzled look before he too left, closing the door behind him and leaving the two alone.

"Sir, tha way it stands now, Miss Bridget don't wanta see ya. She's scared. Scared o' bein' sent back as a deal on tha mortgage."

She was surprised and a bit pleased when he told her that Isaac was dead at the hand of person or persons unknown. But she pressed on.

"But it's no just 'im. I don't know w'ere, but she read sumpthin ya writ 'bout using 'er to sleep with yer friends ta get money from dem. She's scared ta death bout it. That's why she didn't want ta come 'ome. She was gonna run away rather than sleep with anyone but ya."

She saw his stricken look and noted as his hand seemed to unconsciously drift to his locked desk drawer. Could Miss Bridget be right? Could he have actually written such words? Even the times that William, the old butler, had forced himself upon Carrie and fucked her, Dougan understood that Carrie had no say. But her would never have sent her to any man's bed for his own benefits.

"Sire, oi knows she love ya. But right now, she 'urt. 'urt bad. Not just in 'er body, but in 'er 'ead an' 'er 'eart. Oi don't mean she touched. But she confused. An' scared. Oi knows ya loves 'er. But 'ow much? She's not a toy, or a plaything that ya tro about an' let others play wiff."

She stood before him. "You may think that Oi'v been bold or spoke out uv turn. But Oi was assigned ta Miss Bridget and it's 'er welfare that's more important ta me at this time. Oi want tha old Miss Bridget back."

She stopped for a moment before she plowed on.

"If'n ya are tha new Squire an' Lord uv tha manor, it's time ya started acting like one. If'n ya love Miss Bridget, ya should want ta move 'eaven an' earth ta protect 'er an' take care uv 'er. Talk to 'er, esplain things. Ask for forgiveness an' demand that she take ya back."

She stopped and blushed. She usually was not so blunt to the lord, but she had to make him understand. He needed to see that it was like courting Miss Bridget. Cause the Miss and him belonged together.

"Oi should get back ta 'er, now. Oi 'ope ya will not 'old it again me, my words were ment ta 'elp ya." She gave a little curtsy.

When Carrie entered the study and said she wanted to speak to him alone Joshua's heart lurched, had Bridget taken a turn for the worse? All sorts of things ran through his head but Carrie reassured him but then gave him a tongue lashing about his treatment of Bridget and explained that Bridget was afraid he would sell her to anyone who wanted to use her body. He sa stunned by the revelation that Bridget had read the entry in his diary and jumped to the completely wrong conclusion, if she had thought about it surely she would have seen that he had been mortified with himself.

"Isaac is dead Carrie, killed by who we do not know, but she need not fear him anymore."

This seemed to please Carrie but she continued to castigate him for not showing his undoubted love for her and it was up to him to mend things between them. When she had finished then apologised for speaking out of turn he smiled and said most ruefully,

"Thank you Carrie, I needed that, I have been a selfish fool but how can I repair things if Bridget will not even see me ? Clearly you have her best interests at heart so I'm asking for your help, she trusts you, will you not persuade her to listen to me?"

"Oi think she 'as 'er doubts about me as well Sir an' Dougan, she trusts no one at the moment but she does let me tend to her dressings so oi 'ave an idea, if you come wiv me now Sir '"

Joshua being keen to begin building bridges with Bridget followed Carrie to where Bridget was sleeping, Carrie put her fingers to her lips and whispered,

"Yew be as quiet as a church mouse an' say nowt."

Going over to the sleeping Bridget she shook her awake.

"Time to tend to your wounds Miss Bridget, we goin' ta smother you in salve to ease the pain, if you can slip yer night clothes orf an' lay on yer tummy we'll do yer back first."

Joshua stood back out of sight but could see Bridget as she painfully slipped her nightdress off and sat up naked, her beautiful soft breasts a mass of welts and bruises. She lay down on her tummy cradling her head in her arms, again her back and little round buttocks were ablaze with red stripes and blue, black and yellow bruises as were the backs of her thighs and calves, even the soles of her feet had not escaped.

When Bridget had settled down Carrie motioned Joshua forwards and handed him a pot of salve and nodded to him.

Joshua took the pot of creamy ointment from Carrie, the aroma of woodland plants and flowers rising from the pot. Carrie spoke to Bridget as Joshua tenderly spread the ointment over Bridget's naked back, buttocks and legs then began to gently rub it in.
"Don't that feel good Miss? 'Twill ease yer pain no end and oi'm afraid it may arouse you a little when yer private parts are touched but that can't be 'elped, it's necessary to rub it in thoroughly on them parts."
Joshua took his cue from Carrie and her soft buttocks rippled as he smoothed his hands over the twin globes. It took all of his self restraint to not slip a finger into her bruised little brown star as he parted her tender buttocks but he ran his fingertips around her outer rim and heard Bridget moan into the pillows. Up along her slender back that arched in pleasure as he rubbed the salve into her bruised and battered back.
"'Twould be nice if it were Master Joshua, would it not Miss, 'e could talk to yer an' explain 'imself if only you'd listen.."
Carrie cooed in Bridget's ear, coaxing her to relax.
Joshua's eyes misted over as he saw the true extent of Bridget's injuries and silently vowed that he would never put her in that position again, if he needed money he would find some other way to find it.
"Time ter turn over Miss Bridget an' do yer front."
Carrie helped Bridget turn onto her back and find Joshua looking lovingly into her eyes, she started to speak but Carrie said,
"Shush Missy an' listen to 'im', give 'im a chance to explain."
Obediently Bridget closed her mouth and stared at Joshua with hostility in her eyes.
"Oi'll leave yew two alone while 'e does yer front an' tells yer the whys an' wherefores of what 'e did."
Carrie left the room and Bridget and Joshua stared at each other for a few moments. Bridget's small firm breasts were covered with bruises the same as her back and her sex was badly bruised as well although her rosy pink nipples seemed to be relatively undamaged.
"Bridget my love, I truly did not expect or intend for any of this to happen. It was wrong, terribly wrong of me to offer you to Isaac as I did, I had no right, that is why I attempted to deceive him that first time, I had no idea that he'd work it out and then try to abduct you and treat you as he did."
As he spoke he applied some salve to Bridget's bruised belly and accidetally brushed her mound, she flinched and he immediately apologised .
"I'm sorry Bridget it is not my intention to try to sexually arouse you although I have to admit I would do so if I thought for one moment you would be interested and not hate me."
His eyes wandered over Bridget's body, her firm small breasts heaving slowly, his gaze was drawn to the mass of auburn curly hair just above her clit and the puffy lips of her sex.
He saw Bridget's eyes soften slightly as she acknowledged his confession.
"I think it would be best if Carrie finished applying the salve as I doubt that I have enough self control to confine myself to that task alone, I will call on you later if that is what you wish but remember my dear Bridget, I love you with all my heart."
Joshua bent and kissed her soft lips and this time she did not pull away.
"Before I go I have some news that you may like in some way but before I tell you let me reassure you that I was not involved in any way."
Bridget's eyebrows arched in question and Joshua continued,
"Isaac is dead , he was killed after he left here this morning by whose hand and why we do not know."
He cursed himself for not telling Bridget the truth but she seemed to be in a sensitive state and he didn't want to burden her with worry for Estelle.
"I must go for now my dearest but I will call on you later."

Bridget's sleep was filled with pain, the memory of her 24 hours with Isaac a nightmare that just didn't seem to want to turn loose of her. Through the sleep came Carrie's voice in her ear, soft and soothing.

Time to tend to your wounds Miss Bridget, we goin' ta smother you in salve to ease the pain, if you can slip yer night clothes orf an' lay on yer tummy we'll do yer back first.

Slowly, she sat up and unbuttoned her gown. Carrie helped her roll over into her stomach, resting her head in her crossed arms. With a gentle touch, Carrie talked to her, calming her with her voice as her fingers applied the aromatic salve before carefully rubbing it into her skin.

Don't that feel good Miss? 'Twill ease yer pain no end and oi'm afraid it may arouse you a little when yer private parts are touched but that Nah't be 'elped, it's necessary to rub it in thoroughly on them parts.

She felt Carrie's hands began to massage her buttocks, warming and somehow exciting that part of her body as her fingers parted her buttocks, being sure to run some of the salve around her bruised rosebud, causing her to moan. It hurt and yet felt good. Then fingertips massaged the fragrant cream all over her back before finishing up on the back of her legs and soles of her feet.

'Twould be nice if it were Master Joshua, would it not Miss, 'e could talk to yer an' explain 'imself if only you'd listen..

She could feel the medicine working on her injuries. At least the physical ones. Now if she could find something that would heal her heart.

Time ter turn over Miss Bridget an' do yer front.

With Carrie's help, she turned over to find Joshua standing there. It was then that she realized that Joshua had been the one dressing her wounds. Carrie had betrayed her again. But before she could rebuff bee maid, Carrie stopped her.

Shush Missy an' listen to 'im', give 'im a chance to explain.

She could tell that Carrie had her best interests at heart, so she didn't say a word though it still angered her that Joshua would allow someone he supposedly loved to be used so cruelly by Isaac.

Carrie pet her arm, saying,

Oi'll leave yew two alone while 'e does yer front an' tells yer the whys an' wherefores of what 'e did.

Joshua looked deep into her eyes before his eyes ran over the rest of her body. She could see sadness in his eyes.

Bridget my love, I truly did not expect or intend for any of this to happen. It was wrong, terribly wrong of me to offer you to Isaac as I did, I had no right, that is why I attempted to deceive him that first time, I had no idea that he'd work it out and then try to abduct you and treat you as he did.

His fingers gently soothing the unguent over her stomach, following the wounds and bruises. As his fingers touched a particularly sensitive area, she flinch and he apologized, saying,

I'm sorry Bridget it is not my intention to try to sexually arouse you although I have to admit I would do so if I thought for one moment you would be interested and not hate me.

She could tell that he truly meant what he said, and she softened towards him. She could see the pain in his eyes, feel his genuine love and regret as his eyes looked at the pain that Isaac had put her through.

He suddenly stopped, and she thought she saw a tear in the corner of his eye. Then he spoke.

I think it would be best if Carrie finished applying the salve as I doubt that I have enough self control to confine myself to that task alone, I will call on you later if that is what you wish but remember my dear Bridget, I love you with all my heart.

And with that, he bent over and kiss her lips.

Before I go I have some news that you may like in some way but before I tell you let me reassure you that I was not involved in any way. Isaac is dead , he was killed after he left here this morning by whose hand and why we do not know.

She closed her eyes and said a prayer for the person that had done this.

I must go for now my dearest but I will call on you later

He was almost to the door when she spoke. It was so soft that she wasn't sure that he heard it.

"Thank you."

Carrie was waiting outside the door and placed a hand on Joshua's arm.

"Give 'er time, Sir."

Joshua was unsure as to whether his confession to Bridget had any impact on the way she regarded him but as he left heard her murmur her thanks, he turned to go back to her but Carrie put her hand on his arm and advised him to give her time.

"Time? I don't want time, I want Bridget back by my side where she belongs, how long can it take to win back her love?"

"You 'ave 'er love Sir, it's her trust you have to win back,'twill be a long road I fear but you WILL find your destination Sir, of that oi'm certain."

"Thank you Carrie, at least I can rely on you and Dougan to tell me the truth and put in a good word for me with Bridget."

Joshua was at a loss with what to do with himself, his accounts were of no interest to him at this moment , all he wanted was to be with Bridget and hold her in his arms and hear her say that she loved him and forgave him. With this in mind he went in search of Doctor Brady to ask if Bridget was well enough to be taken into the garden seated in a comfortable padded bathchair chair that his mother had used in her last days. This would enable him to give Bridget the chance to breathe some fresh air and smell the spring flowers that she loved and also give him the opportunity to talk to Bridget.

He was informed that Doctor Brady was in one of the less opulent guest rooms that he was using so as to be available if needed, he knocked on the door and thinking that he heard an invitation to enter he opened the door to be greeted by the sight of Jean riding the Doctor's cock, her well endowed tits bouncing wildly.

"Excuse me Doctor I didn't realise you were with a needy patient." Joshua tried to give the impression that he hadn't noticed but Jean laughed and giggled,

"I am most certainly in need Sir and the doctor is kind enough to know exactly what medicine is required."

Joshua smiled at Jean's reply and being of a generous disposition he said,

"In that case Jean I will only take a moment of the good Doctor's time and ask if it wise to take Miss Bridget into the garden in a bathchair, well wrapped up of course?, Then you can continue receiving your medicine."

The Doctor grinned at Joshua thankful for his understanding,

"Of course she can take the air, kept warm, mind. 'Tis good for her breathing. If there is nothing else I would like to get back to my patient. "

Joshua left without a word but feeling envious of both the Doctor and Jean. He found the disused bathchair in the cellar and spent an hour cleaning it and making it comfortable before he rang for Dougan to help him carry it up the stairs to fetch Bridget and carry her down again.

When they arrived at Bridget's room she was propped up by several pillows and reading poetry by one of the poets of the time.

"Bridget my love, I said I would be back and I have a surprise for you, how would you like to take a turn round the garden? I have just the thing."

He looked hopefully at Bridget, praying that she would accept his offer in the manner with which it was intended.

"Bring it in Dougan."

Yet, love, mere love, is beautiful indeed
And worthy of acceptation. Fire is bright,
Let temple burn, or flax; an equal light
Leaps in the flame from cedar-plank or weed:
And love is fire. And when I say at need
I love thee . . . mark! . . . I love thee—in thy sight
I stand transfigured, glorified aright,
With conscience of the new rays that proceed
Out of my face toward thine. There's nothing low
In love, when love the lowest: meanest creatures
Who love God, God accepts while loving so.
And what I feel, across the inferior features
Of what I am, doth flash itself, and show
How that great work of Love enhances Nature's.

Bridget was propped up in bed reading a sonnet of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. There was a light knock on the door and in came Joshua. The look on his face was hopeful as he approached her.

Bridget my love, I said I would be back and I have a surprise for you, how would you like to take a turn round the garden? I have just the thing.

She gave him a hesitant smile before nodding. Joshua turned and called out.

Bring it in Dougan.

Dougan rolled in a wicker bathing chair. She was actually tickled at the thought of going out and getting fresh air. She looked at Joshua and could see the hopefulness in his eyes.

She smiled at him.

"Dougan, please take that thing downstairs and set it outside."

She could see the disappointment in Joshua's eyes.

"I will only ride in that thing," she hesitated before she looked straight at Joshua, "if Joshua will carry me down and put me in it."

She knew that they agreed that she would only call him Joshua in private. But times change. She waited to see what he would do.

Joshua was nervous as he approached Bridget's bedside and asked if he might take her into the garden for some air. He didn't know if she wanted to be near him or even afraid of him, her wan smile gave him hope but that was dashed when she told Dougan to take the chair away and put it outside. Then she smiled at him and stated her terms were that she would only ride in the chair if he carried her Downstairs. His heart leapt and he bent to kiss her forehead and replied,

"How could any man refuse such an invitation, I would be honoured to hold you in my arms again. Dougan please do as Miss Bridget requests while I wrap her up warm to keep the chill away."

Joyfully he found a thick woollen blanket and tucked it around her, he put his arm under her knees and asked,

"Would you put your arms around my neck? 'Twould be disastrous if I were to drop you."

As he gently lifted her she winced and gasped with pain.

"My apologies my love, I must be more careful, rest your head on my shoulder."

Bridget felt as light as a feather as he carried her down the stairs and sat her in the chair before tucking the blanket around her.

It felt so good to hold her soft, warm body again he almost forgot about her injuries and squeezed her tighter than he intended until she reminded him that she was still in a delicate condition. They meandered through the gardens admiring the late spring flowers and the yellow, pink and white blossom on the trees, chatting about mundane things. Joshua was reluctant to bring up the subject of Isaac's treatment of Bridget and his part in the whole sordid affair although he longed to know if Bridget had forgiven him and if they could ever go back to the carefree lovers that they once were.

Suddenly he stopped the chair.

"Don't move, stay right where you are, I won't be long" Completely ignoring the fact that Bridget could go nowhere without him. He returned about ten minutes later with one hand hidden behind his back.

"Close your eyes Bridget my love." He entreated her and when she complied he took her hand and although she pulled away slightly perhaps believing he was going to expose himself to her, he insisted and placed a posy of brightly coloured flowers in her hand.

"I remember how much you love flowers Bridget, I thought these might brighten your room and remind you of me. We must go back now, I don't wish to tire you."

The short walk back to the Manor was taken in silence and Dougan was waiting to take the chair away but Joshua said,

"Leave it in the hallway, perhaps Miss Bridget will allow me to take her out every day until she recovers"

He picked her up as before and carried her up to her room, on the way instructing a passing maid to find a vase for the flowers. He laid Bridget down carefully and tilted her face to kiss her soft cherry lips and he noticed a flush in her cheeks that hadn't been there earlier.

"Rest now my dear and we'll have you back on your feet in no time at all."

He left slowly looking back at Bridget.

Carefully her wrapped her up in a soft, woolen blanket and gently picked her up before telling her,

Would you put your arms around my neck? 'Twould be disastrous if I were to drop you.

He tried to pick her up but the pain caused her to give a gasp.

My apologies my love, I must be more careful, rest your head on my shoulder.

She did as he bade her to, trying to show him that she was trying to trust him again. Before she knew it, he had her back out in the late spring air, enjoying the birds and flowers, just chatting about nothing in particular. There was no deep discussions, nor hard and fast rules. But she could feel that she was tiring out all the same. Suddenly, he told her to stay still and she couldn't help but smile as he rushed off. When he returned, he was hiding something behind his back.

Close your eyes Bridget my love.

He took her hand and it surprised her when he gave her a beautiful bouquet of flowers in her hand.

I remember how much you love flowers Bridget, I thought these might brighten your room and remind you of me. We must go back now, I don't wish to tire you.

They walked back to the house in silence where they found Dougan waiting for them. He was going to put away the chair, Joshua said,

Leave it in the hallway, perhaps Miss Bridget will allow me to take her out every day until she recovers

Joshua picked her up and soon had her back tucked in bed and a vase holding the flowers beside her on the table. He kissed her before he left.

Rest now my dear and we'll have you back on your feet in no time at all.

She smiled at him as he left. Carrie walked in and settled Miss Bridget down for a nap.

"Yew ben all escited an' could use a rest. But oi'm thinkin' that tha bit a color on them cheeks is a right pretty sight."

Carrie clucked over her charge until Bridget drifted off to sleep before she went off to tell the Master just what a good job he did. She suspected that things were on their way to mending.

For the next two or three days Joshua took Bridget out in the bath chair and on each occasion he picked her a posy of flowers and delighted in her radiant smile, it seemed her pain was easing and the injuries fading but still he steered clear of mentioning her ordeal preferring to let her find her own way through the trauma. On the third day Doctor Brady accompanied them for a few minutes and then declared that Bridget's feet were now healed sufficiently for her to walk a little, adding with a smile

"Unless that is, you so enjoy being in Joshua's arms

Joshua and Bridget exchanged shy smiles and both began to speak at the same time but Joshua spoke out as Bridget fell silent.

"If you remember Bridget my dear not that long ago I promised you that you would never sleep alone again but due to my own folly I have not kept that promise but with your permission I would wish to renew my vow, I understand if you wish to consider before answering but I want to be there to comfort you if the night terrors come to haunt you"

His tone was sincere, not pleading nor demanding.

He didn't wait for an answer but took both of Bridget's hands and gently pulled her to her feet and steadied her as she leant against him and together they took three or four tenuous steps before Doctor Brady said,

"That is enough for today, a little more each day and you will be leaping like a gazelle afore the week is out"

Joshua helped Bridget back to her chair and on the way back to the Manor he whispered so the doctor could not hear,

"I adore you Bridget Sweetwater, I only wish that you could love me back."

Bridget came to looking forward to Joshua arriving daily to carry her down the stairs and walk her around outside. Their time together was pleasant and stress free, with no personal questions asked. Each day he would supply her with a new bouquet and she soon had a bedroom filled with vases full of flowers, which she enjoyed and would look at them and smile.

Then, one day, Dr. Brady followed them as they left the house to stroll and after a bit, he slipped off her slippers and, checking the soles of her feet, pronounced her feet ready to try walking as long as she took it easy. Then, he said,

Unless that is, you so enjoy being in Joshua's arms

She thought a moment. She did enjoy being in his arms. She started to speak but Joshua spoke first.

If you remember Bridget my dear not that long ago I promised you that you would never sleep alone again but due to my own folly I have not kept that promise but with your permission I would wish to renew my vow, I understand if you wish to consider before answering but I want to be there to comfort you if the night terrors come to haunt you

She recognized that he spoke with sincerity. Then suddenly he took both her hands and helped to steady her as she took her first couple of tenuous steps before the Doctor told them that it was enough for today.

Back in the chair and heading inside, she heard Joshua whisper into her ear.

I adore you Bridget Sweetwater, I only wish that you could love me back.

Once inside the manor, he picked her up and carefully carried her back up to her room, and with great care, he placed her on her bed. He started to stand back up, but she wouldn't let go. She kept her arms tight around his neck, not letting go. After about the third time of trying and not succeeding, he finally started to understand what she was trying to say. He stopped and looked at her.

"Joshua, I have never stopped loving you. I miss sleeping in your arms, waking up beside you. It would be nice to have you chase away the nightmares."

With Bridget's arms tight around his neck Joshua lowered her to her bed but she clung on to him and whispered,

"Joshua, I have never stopped loving you. I miss sleeping in your arms, waking up beside you. It would be nice to have you chase away the nightmares."

She wanted him to be with her when the nightmares came.

As her arms tightened around his neck Joshua realized that Bridget actually wanted to him to be with her always and his heart leapt, he leaned down searching for her soft wet lips and kissed her passionately, their tongues danced together and Joshua opened the front of Bridget's nightgown and slipped it from her shoulders to her waist and he gazed with desire at her full round breasts tipped with ripe pink nipples that visibly grew under his gaze. Tenderly he stroked the swell of her breasts, careful not to hurt her remaining scars,

"Oh my love, what pain I have caused you, my heart aches with shame."

He laid her down on her back and slowly drew her gown up, revealing her glorious dark curly bush.

"May I touch you there my love?"

He asked, his voice trembling with emotion.

Before he could say more they were interrupted by Dougan knocking on the door and calling out

"Mr Joshua sir, beggin' yer pardon but there's gennelman wishin' to speak wiv yer, says it's urgent, looks like a s'liciter t'me"

"Damnation , what a time to call."

Joshua cursed and gave Bridget a wry smile,

"I shall have to go and see what is so urgent but I'll return as soon as I can."

As he reached the door he turned and blew a kiss to her from the palm of his hand

As he realized what she was saying, she could see the love in Joshua's eyes as he gently kissed her. It was a passionate kiss, their tongues dancing with each other, and the feelings she had once felt for him were slowly reawakening.

His hands shook a bit as he opened her gown and slipped it off her shoulders, his eyes full of desire as he looked at her breast. They still were tender and had the remains of bruises. But his touch was soft as he stroked them.

Oh my love, what pain I have caused you, my heart aches with shame.

He helped her to lay back against her pillows before lifting the hem of her gown to reveal the auburn curls on her mound. She could see the desire in his eyes and his voice quivered as he spoke.

May I touch you there my love?

Suddenly, a knock on the door interrupted him. Dougan stood on the other side of the closed door, calling out his reason for the disruption.

Mr Joshua sir, beggin' yer pardon but there's gennelman wishin' to speak wiv yer, says it's urgent, looks like a s'liciter t'me

Joshua was irritated at being interrupted but promised to soon return.

The entire afternoon had been exhausting and when Carrie checked in later, she found Miss Bridget sound asleep.

Carrie had thoughts of her own that were occupying her mind. She was already a little over two weeks overdue for her special time. She placed a hand on her belly and smiled to herself. She wanted to wait a while longer before she told Dougan, in case something happened and she either wasn't pregnant, or she lost the baby.

Meanwhile, she went about her work, a little smile on her face.

Joshua had his visitor shown into his study and waited for him to introduce himself,

"My name is Sebastian Muddle, solicitor to Mr. Isaac Crabbe now deceased, I represent his estate and would like to ask you some questions to clarify some points with you."

"I know very little of Isaac's affairs beyond the fact that I owe him several hundred guineas that I can ill afford and that he was a foul and cruel man."

".That's as may be but does not concern me. I believe you are Mr. Crabbe's cousin, is that correct?"

"That is correct, he was the only child of my father's brother my Uncle Samuel, God rest their souls."

"So far as you are aware are there any other living relatives such as children excluding those born out of wedlock?"

"No, so far as I know Isaac never married, but knowing the nature of the man there may be several illegitimate children. Now Mr. Muddle can you tell me to what all these questions are leading?"

"I will be making further enquiries but if all you have told me proves to be correct then as the only surviving family member his whole estate will pass to you, less my fees of course."

Joshua was in shocked silence and Sebastian Muddle continued,

"By his estate I mean everything, his house, money, investments, business interests and his servants become your responsibility. In just a few days you could be a very wealthy young man."

Joshua thanked him for his time and sat down to think, he was stunned. This could prove to be his saviour but he needed advice and the only person he wanted to talk to about it was Bridget.
Going back to Bridget he sat on the edge of the bed as she sat with her nightgown still around her waist. Doing his best to ignore the alluring swell of her breasts and her hard pointed nipples he took both of her hands in his and told her all that had passed between him and Sebastian Muddle.

"What shall I do if I am truly his heir? It is not unreasonable to assume that most of his wealth he had accumulated through nefarious affairs and if I accept I will be embroiled as well, on the other hand I, that is, We, could help those poor girls in his household. I am at a complete loss my love. "
