I'll confess that I haven't participated the past few years besides offering tips from my experiences, so I don't know how well (or badly) Secret Santa has gone the past few years.
But...it's holiday time, which made me think of Secret Santa and the fun we've had with it in the past. So...how has everyone's Santa experience been? Is it an AH tradition worth continuing? Are peeps still interested in doing it?

I could probably be persuaded to help with the organizing/nagging of it if there's enough interest. If not, then we can use this thread to reminisce about years past and how much we love all of our Secret Santas. :)

Thoughts?

I definitely had good experiences with the two I participated in and I'd be happy to join in once more.

I'd particiapate again if it was going on. It was quite fun the last few years.

How can we have Secret Santas? We can't mail gifts or cards to each other, because we don't know each other's addresses, and if we send email, our names will be on it?

The coordinator takes care of sending the secret Santa the recipient's address. You can use other addresses than your home, if necessary.

You send your name and address and info to the organiser. You then pick a number (the highest number is the number of people participating) and the organiser sends you someone's name and address and that is your recipient who you buy a present for and your details will go to someone else. Only the organiser knows who sends to who.

That's the secret element of secret Santa.

I'm already organising a Secret Santa on another forum so I'm not up for organising but I'd happily join in. I've always had a great deal of fun with it. Although if we're doing it, it'll need to get underway pretty soon I think. :)

I think it should have started a couple of weeks ago, ideally, but if there's enough interest we could get it rolling this week.

Seems Jen did it last year, I didn't participate, but followed the thread, I think I missed out on a fun time. I'm in this year!

In past years, we agreed on a bunch of stuff before we got started: a deadline for mailing and an opening day, as well as the price limit and what kinds of info we want people to send to the organizer who will then send it to the Santas.

I didn't follow it very closely last year, so I don't know what was decided but I know back when I did it, we included info like mailing instructions, favorite colors, hobbies and interests, etc. Basically info that makes buying a good present more doable. :)

The deadline for mailing needs to be pretty far in advance so that there is time for gifts to make it over the pond. I think in the past we've asked anyone who can't ship internationally because of costs to just let the organizer know so that the assignments can be made accordingly.

It was lots of fun the years I ran it, and I can't begin to thank everyone enough for being my Santa the first year.

If we get it all decided we could get people to send details in and start number picking next week then we could have 3 weeks a bit longer to opening day. People would have to get cracking with the gift picking.

Sophia, are you going to organise things then? :)

Hey there EL, I checked back to the 2009 Santa and it was started on November 17th.

I too was wondering if SJ was going to get it sorted this year...

It seems that way. :)

So I'd think people need to decide by the end of this weekish if they are participating. By next Friday, we'd need info and numbers picked. It seems to me that we typically have the opening around a week before Christmas, so the 18ish, depending on people's preferences.

Ok... are you going to put up the official signup thread... soon?

Before I start a sign-up thread, it'd help to get some feedback about what kind of info we want people to offer. That way I can put everything people need to do in the sign up thread and I hopefully won't have to hunt too many people down to nag them for their info.

Any thoughts on price range? Restrictions? Etc etc

So I'm thinking-
name
address
shipping restrictions, if any
fave color
hobbies
particular interests or collections

What am I missing?

If you have a wish list on Amazon, you can program it with your shipping info and someone can buy you something without knowing your addy... and they can send it w/ anonymity.
