Do you happen to live somewhere they have an annual festival?

Yes. It's on now until Sunday but it isn't well known beyond a ten mile radius. I've been involved since it started in 1993.

Before that I used to organise a Town Show which showcased many of the amateur groups in the town. The home made wine club gave away free samples. I had the stage filled for two whole days (quality of performances very variable). There were about 80 organisations involved at the height of its popularity but it gradually declined because I couldn't get the organisations to be innovative or even change what they had done last year.

The unexpected stage hit was a ladies' keep-fit class. They had never performed in public and the stage was smaller than the room they usually had. After the first few minutes one of them knocked another one over. As soon as it was clear that neither was hurt and they continued to perform they were applauded. They started hamming it up to get laughs. One over-endowed lady fell off the stage and was caught by two men in the front row. They, and she, liked that so she did it again.

They were given a standing ovation and had to perform two encores.

The health and safety requirements for the venue were difficult. We couldn't have any naked lights and certainly no smoking. I had booked a local circus school. I was in another part of the venue when they started their finale. They were fire-eating on stage. Luckily for me the venue's managers were also absent. They heard about the fire-eating later. I wasn't allowed to use the circus school again. (Yes, they did know about the regulations. They just didn't care. When have clowns been responsible?)

It's admirable that you've sponsored this poetry event. I used to work with a committee that developed national literacy tests ( a committee of geniuses and nuts, imo). I fought every year to get poetry into the tests, just to expose young people to what I hope were good poems. One year I got Billy Collins' "Snow Day" on the test.

I don't like clowns. They usually have a creepy quality. To me.

I don't think it would be a disaster if I became known - temporarily embarrassing perhaps but no more.

One of our local councillors had made a porn movie when a student. When it was "found" by the local newspaper he had jokes made about him in the Council chamber. At the next election he was returned with a larger majority!

I don't know. I've been spending a lot of time there, but mainly exploring. I've been in a long dry period for writing poetry--or anything, really. But I don't think that has anything to do with here or there. I think it's more a function of burning out after writing so much every day for so long. I think I'm starting to come out of it though.

I do enjoy the poetry community at SL. There are some excellent writers there, and because of the voice capabilities there, it's possible to attend readings (and concerts, plays, etc.), which I really like. I've done a fair amount of reading there.

What I like most about SL though is just wandering through the endless sims and marvelling at the creativity there. It is quite amazing what people have built.

The decline here is I think due to a number of factors unrelated to Second Life or any other site that attracts poets. One big reason is that neither Eve, Lauren nor I put the time in here we once did. I always felt that the threads, the contests and challenges motivated people and kept them coming back. But I am no longer so motivated to put that time in--over the past year especially I came to realize that no matter how hard I tried, few people seemed to appreciate that I was giving what I was purely out of love of poetry and the people here. It just got too argumentative, too personally nasty. I wasn't happy and comfortable here like I used to be.

A few people here like UYS and Hmmnmm and LadyS have hung in there and kept the forum going. I am very grateful to them for that. We've picked up some wonderful new writers and some of the older ones--like Deep Asleep--have come back, which is also good for this place. I think it will continue to improve, slowly, but it will. There are some poets who I miss who for various reasons will not return and that saddens me, but it's not something I can do anything about.

Oh and fyi, to the best of my knowledge only a few poets from here are also at Second Life, so I don't think there's any kind of rush for people here to shift to there...

Shame on us for not being on SL more often. We mean to and we try, but so much work for both of us. Can I just say Ang, that your SL boobs are, sigh, 'vunderbar'.

I've got an Ang SL body on my AV... a little trimmer and a lot shorter, but basically the same.. I'm learnin' the ropes in there with some glorious guides and I just know there are many people here who hang there, you'll just need to contact S. for the info
