Twentysomething years ago, Alice and Bob had a one night swap their neighbours with Cindy and Doug. Nine months later Alice and Cindy both had children. The families grew up together.

no one comments how Bob and Alice's daughter Faye has Doug's red hair and freckles, or that Cindy and Doug's son Eddie looks just like Bob.

...and that's as far as I get with the idea... almost... clearly Eddie & Faye could start hooking up, so accidental incest, confrontation with the reality, etc etc but not sure if there is then an inter generational swap (as implied by title of the post).

OR.... do Eddie and Faye not hook up, but instead marry others, but then THEY swap, and nine months later....???

I did something similar in JENNY BE FAIR (linked below) where Jack wants to screw various of the town girls but his dad says, "Sorry son, I screwed their mothers, so they're your sisters" and Jack is all bummed till his mother says, "Don't worry, he's not really your father, screw whomever you want".

Applying that to your idea: It wasn't just Alice, Cindy, Bob and Doug that swapped, but a few other couples too, and they continued for years (maybe up to the present), and nobody is quite sure of the fathers of ANY of the multi-familial offsping. So maybe the kids arrange for DNA tests so they can know who's off-limits? Or maybe they don't care, and they bring in outsiders, and everybody fucks, tra la tra la.

Hmmm, I may include this as a plot-gerbil in PRICKLY PAIRS, if I ever finish it. ;)

Or maybe Eddie marries Gina and Faye marries Hugh - and THOSE couples swap, resulting in the accidental incest...though that still lacks the true multigenerational zing.

Simple: Gina and Hugh are similarly children of swapping parents Isabel-Jerry-Kendra-Larry, who are maybe cousins of Alice-Bob-Cindy-Doug. Keep it all in the family(s).

WARNING: Writing about these relationships requires careful drafting of family trees. Believe me, I've done it, to the point where I'm stuck on the sequel to JENNY BE FAIR with similar multi-generational complexities. I'll have the same problem when I finally write I'M MY OWN GRAM-PAW. My BLACK AND WHITE sequels will need careful genealogical mapping also. Hey, it's sort of like writing software -- decision-table code. Hmmm, maybe if I outline and define the relationships and feed those to a code generator, the tables will be automagically written for me, hmmm?

I don't understand how that would be accidental incest. If Faye is Doug's and Alice's daughter, and Eddie is Bob's and Cindy's son, then they're not even related.

You're absolutely correct. Now, if each couple had their OWN kids as well as the swap-session kids, THEN we could see some accidental incest. Time to churn out the genealogical charts...

BTW: I have written, and will continue to write, stories of inadvertent incest, where the participants aren't aware of their relationship before they start consorting. Such of my tales so far mostly deal with early family separations, not the products of neighbor-swapping or general cheating. (Except JENNY BE FAIR.) But THAT'S MY GIRL and BLACK AND WHITE and their upcoming sequels, and some other stories in the pipeline, all depend on early abandonment or adoption or the like.

Swap-session kids -- hmmm, yeah, I could work those into a story...
