Secession.

Secessionists from New England and the South recently convened in Tennessee to discuss their common interests. If the United States fractured along regional lines, how would freedom of speech be affected where you live?

California, hmmm...

I think CA would quickly fracture as well-- not north-south as people assume, but the coast from the inland.

Possibly.

FL is a very conservative state. (A lot of old people here.) Freedom of speech would probably be more restricted. Which sucks. Incidentally, gun control would probably be loosened and captial punishment would be increased.

Goodie, police state.

I agree. I think Florida would fracture north and south, but cities like Tampa and Tallahassee and Orlando would associate with the liberal region. West Florida would align with Alabama. The Bible Thumpers and Lefties will squash freedom of expression.

AS far as I remember from my visits to Tampa and Orlando, the cities are mostly populated by ex New Yorkers, anyway...

Poor New Yorkers. The rich ones move to Ft.Lauderdale.

Oregon would never even notice the country fracturing. We really aren't part of the Union anyway, or so it seems.

We already have a community thats pretty weird. It's Coral Springs, Florida. Disney CELEBRATION has a reputation for being beneath the boots of Nazis, but Coral Springs is a lot worse. Every building it town looks identical. No signs are allowed anywhere. If you dont know where McDonalds is you'll never find it. It looks like the bank and everything else.

Yeh. My wife was from New York. My GF is from New York. Mostly I catch hell because I speak Ebonics fluently, and they think my talent is offensive. But its okay if Hillary talks like a plow-hand.

These guys are serious, though.
So was my response, James

Oregon, with a few exceptions, is so backward they really wouldn't notice outside Portland. The people to the south and east still thing Hurbert Hoover is president.

Florida was that way for a long time. The country-folk thought a fork was as exotic as chop-sticks. My mother's people squatted out in the middle of nowhere for 150 years eating dirt, then the state bought their water-rights for 10 MILLION, and the whole crew bought new trailers and pick-ups.

I've lived in several regions, New Jersey, California, Massachussetts, and I live in Florida now.

Lots of my family came from deep south origins. My brother grew up in New Jersey and lives in Texas.

I think freedom exists in all these places. I wasn't arrested anywhere...

Freedom of speech doesn't mean that people won't disagree with you. So far I have freedom of action and freedom of speech. Just not many folks who agree with me. But I believe that freedom has to be earned anyway.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is already fractured and is splitting further. Scotland and Wales have their own assemblies. Northern Ireland now has Stormont (again). Some of the Cornish want to secede.

My county, Kent, is part of GOSE - The Government Office for the South East and there is a SE Regional Assembly that virtually no one in Kent cares about. The government definition of the South East is Kent and the other counties around to Berkshire including Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The only thing we have in common is that we are all affected by London - yet the regional office and assembly are barred from discussing the impact of London.

Kent has more in common with Essex than with Berkshire but Essex is in "Eastern England". Both counties speak Estuary English and Berkshire folk would have some difficulty understanding us.

However free speech is unaffected by whatever divisions exist or are planned in the United Kingdom. We have a tradition of speaking our minds to our rulers - and in fluent Anglo-Saxon terminology. F*** Off! (or the Welsh, Scots, Gaelic or Cornish equivalent) is the natural response to politicians and also to anyone who suggests that we should restrict free speech.
