Season’s Greetings and All The Best for the New Year to AH’ers everywhere!

For a reason that I have not yet discovered, I have been watching Christmas programming on several ‘women’s’ channels on television, I.E., Hallmark, Lifetime, OH and some oldies but goodies on TCM and other venues. Much of the programming can be described as one pundit did portraying a single Santa searching for a new Mrs. Claus as, “treacly” , no doubt from a Dickenson working of the English confection,, ‘Treacle’, I think, sweet, sticky mello-drama.

But, the more of the programs I watched and some even tear’d up over, I began to realize that most had a common denominator; that of ‘belief’.

And of course the religion thing, the ‘God’ thing, the Christ in Christmas thing, all plays a role…but beneath and beyond all that, many of these programs touched upon a perhaps innate human desire to ‘believe’ in things magical, beyond the common experience of life.

That desire to believe in life beyond death, of happy endings and the just rewards of an honest and productive life, of doing the ‘right’ things, of being kind, courteous, forgiving, helpful, tolerant, all the virtues, the ‘goody-goodies’ of social propriety fume about.

So, to all Ah’er’s who are really kids at heart and still believe in Santa Claus, good ole St. Nick, Christmas gift giving, celebrating with family and friends that special time of the year….Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you!

And to you, Amicus. I would say I have to agree with you; we all want to believe in something, and more often than not, that 'something' is a good thing, a warm and comfortable and uplifting thing.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Thank you slyc_willie...been hunkered down for a few days without electricity here on the Oregon coast, fireplace and candles and a whole famdamily gathered in one room with blankets over door and hallways to keep the heat in, interesting experience...

But all is back to relative normality now and decorations are going up and plans made for gatherings and such....hope your holidays are enjoyable...

And to you, English Lady...and the many, many friends in England proper and Scotland and Ireland and the low countries, some of whom have come and gone over the years but some still remain here an on other forums and instant message venues, ain't the internet great? even better than Ham Radio, which I used to do as much each day as I do now the web....Happy Holidays!

Sorry to hear about those northern West Coast troubles . . . I lived for a time in Federal Way, WA, and enjoyed a winter of bitter stringing rain and cold and rolling blackouts. Hope it all turns out comfy and cozy for you.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying a warm, 74-degree afternoon in central Texas . . . .

Yes, I'm a sadist at times. ;)

Hey, Slyc...also did time in semi tropical regions such as Hawaii, Florida, and Mississippi...before Katrina....but also lived near Federal Way, I think, in Kirkland and was a boy in Tacoma and stationed at Whidbey(sp) Island NAS near Oak Harbor, Washington for a year or so...

So...we do seem to survive...one way or another...cheers...lift one in my direction!

amicus... (Texas I can do without, spent a week there one day...grins)

A merry Christmas to you and yours, ami, from the other side of the pond.

Thank you, Kendo, and to you and yours....it's a wunnerful life...ahem...

Thanks ami....here's hoping 2007 starts me off as not such a bitch. I know I haven't been the greatest soul on Lit lately but...hey, New Year, right?

:rose: Keep us updated on that West Coast sitch, huh? :rose:

I have to chuckle at that, good luck on your New Year's Resolutions, I find myself being the same obnoxious asshole, year after year, why fight it?

I'm more of a homicidal, raging bitch than just an obnoxious asshole. You're an obnoxious asshole, ami, but you're okay, y'know. :rose:

We went through our two days of blackout earlier this fall (thankfully it was 60-70 degrees out). Hope everyone was taken care of in your area (it is cool how people try to be kinder this time of year). I agree that we want to believe in something, although it's different for everyone. I've had the best couple of months of my life, so am deliriously happy, no matter how it happened (although I'm going to believe it's the answer to some long-standing prayers).

Love and wishes to all the AHers and their families. Hope we can all take care of each other, at least for a while (then the political threads will make us want to kill one another again  ).

I share your thoughts...nice to know someone is 'deliriously happy' , thas a really nice place to be...and prayers...yes...that should be a subject someday, for both believers and non believers...and politics, yeah, I know...it is a struggle for either side to acknowledge that the other may indeed be human after all...I wonder about that sometimes....

Why do both a Yorkshire Pudding and a Purple Bikini bottom cause me to drool? Bad genes?

The best to all the Yorkshire, UK peeps....and have high expectations for the coming year...

Thank you, Vella_ms...yes, the Northwest, has it's own plate of problems, not the Hurricanes of the southeast, nor the tornado's of the midwest, nor the intense blizzards of the northeast...but the San Francisco earthquakes, (more to follow), Mt. St. Helens, (Ranier and Shasta are overdue) and for the non believers, the great Columbia River, that begins far to the north, froze completely over in the late 1930's and may well do so again someday...

...and differing views...yes...of course, always...but I have always also thought that core understandings meshed, especially with those of us who dare to put words on paper...

Big A,

I know the weather's been crappy up your way, but after reading your post, I'm now worried about both your physical and mental well being. Take care.

And a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours. I'm sure that whether one is a conservative, liberal, or like me, a militant middle-of-the-roader, everyone can agree that what we all need is a little piece.
