Does anybody know if there's a way to search for a user by e-mail address? Or is that part of keeping peoples identity private.

You're right, email addresses can't be searched.

Depending on why you need to connect an e-mail to a Lit username, vBulletin allows the admins (and possibly some moderators) to search/select usernames by e-mail (among many other searchable fields.) Regular users cannot search by e-mail.
