Juliangel and her research skills gave me the idea for this thread. Thanks uber'babe!

And I thought quite a few others might find it usefull too.

Search Engines???????

I'm pretty clueless as to which ones, "work best." Or which ones, "work best for certain types of searches."

My ignorance of nearly all things data and sticking with what limited things I know about this subject - drive me to pretty much stay with one search engine - Yahoo. Maybe good, maybe not - I have no clue.

So my question to all would be: What are your opinion's and preferences on Search Engines? Why do you prefer the one's you use and please, relate any tricks that might make things easier for an old black&white TV kid, a child of the 60's.

Think of me as Jerry Mather's with blonde hair and a bit on the leaner meaner side. Opey on crack.

I can usually find what I am looking for with aol's search, that is how I found the teeth answer.
If that fails I use http://www.askjeeves.com, http://www.dogpile.com, and http://www.yahoo.com in that order.

and your welcome Sparky anytime :)

I usually start out with YAHOO, if that doesn't work then I switch off to Askjeeves ordogpile,,,

don't really care for AOL search feature at all

MSN Search usualy works fine for me.

I've had reasonably good luck with Google and Alltheweb.com.

When I am looking for specific documents on medical or military matters, I usually go for Lycos. They categorize everything into what best suites your purposes. In fact, I rarely use anything else

http://www.metacrawler.com ~ it combines a list from ALL the search engines put together. Pretty dandy tool me thinks.. It also has this thing called Metaspy (exposed)where you can see what people are searching for, there's some pretty weird/ horny people out there.. enjoy!

I like to use http://www.ask.com It is relatively easy and it doesn't come up with as many "vague" hits as some of the other search engines. And it gives you more direct choices to choose from, will also give you more direct links to other search engines if you can't find what you are looking for.

I like MSN and askjeeves. I think my preference is due to the way the hits come up and the way my brain (doesn't) work.

I'm definitely on the Google bandwagon. I don't know how many other search engines use their technique (sites are ranked based on how many other sites link to them, and how many sites link to those sites, ad infinitum. It's all based on the assumption that sites that are linked to more frequently and by more popular sites are more likely to be better sites).

Ingenius if you ask me. Of course it works less well for finding porn since most sites would never link to a porn site to begin with.

Of course, this isn't a problem for me, since I'd never search for porn. ;)

Oh, it finds it's fair share of porn. Not that I noticed or anything.... :) <shuffling feet>

Hehe... that's true. In fact, Literotica used to be the first listed site in a search for "erotic stories".

Laurel, you need to get some more links so you can get back on top! ;)

Yeah, don't remind me. *cringes* They changed their algorithm and we got fucked. Same thing with Yahoo. The Search Engine Gods hate us all of a sudden. What's up with that!?

Google's the best as far as finding relevant stuff. Metacrawler is also good, as it searches the other top search engines. Yahoo isn't a search engine - it's a directory - but that's another thread.

No one has mentioned it but I actually like Snap.com... Yahoo has become frustrating (now, it's NBCi.com or something like it... it's great for finding pics... maybe not the kind most people immediately think about, but you know, the Eiffel Tower and Tower of Pisa... no, too phallic, I suppose... how about the Pyramids... oh, never mind...) Still, Snap.com is where I go when I want to find something.

For searching, I use AskJeeves most of the time

I hate finding outdated links. I find Lycos and excite are bad for that. (Or maybe at one point they were and that's why I don't use them as often.)

I like Yahoo because it isn't a search engine and is a directory instead. Seems to make the most sense to me because I can narrow stuff down and get what I want rather than a huge listing of crap.

I can't remember what I was searching for the other day, but I got pages and pages of links of just crap that wasn't at all related to my search. I can't remember which search engine I was using at the time. (Not AskJeeves, that I know.) All the links seemed to be the same. It seemed as if this lame-ass site had figured out a way to come up on every search engine repeatedly.

To me, the net anti-guru that I am, finding sites based on the amount of links they have seems like a less than ideal method. I mean, a really great site (like this one) can slip down the pipe simply because it doesn't have a lot of links. Who says more links = better site?
