Seanh Check Your lasagna...

The media has been overreacting.

While horsemeat is NOT beef, it isn't harmful for human consumption.

It shouldn't be in beef products, but isn't contaminated nor life-threatening.

Might want to check your Spam and corned beef while you're at it. My grand-relatives were just having this conversation a few weeks ago; they're pretty sure they've unwittingly eaten lots of horse over the years.

That I know of there is no abattoir handling horse meat at all in Ontario anymore, but a few years ago we used to ship all the meat horses to Quebec.

Now they're just dog chow.

(edit...I meant Ontario, not Canada. I think the west still has some licensed plants)

I think we still have one, I remember an abuse scandal in Cheshire not so long ago. But afaik, any horse meat for human consumption is purely for export. Brits just don't buy it. Not knowingly, anyway.

Canada has had it's share of those reports also - I think any industry dealing in the final life stages of a living thing comes under intense scrutiny and criticism - warranted or not.

Did you ever watch the movie Temple Grandin?

The meat market is fickle - but give a nation some hardship and resulting food shortage, and anything on 4 legs can become food again.

Who cares? I get the mislabeling but it's otherwise stupid. We're ok with eating cows because they're kinda ugly and we don't typically have them as pets. We're not ok with eating horses because they've been companions and tools for thousands of years. It has nothing to do with quality of meat other than I imagine horse might be tougher.

I tend to agree but then I'm off all meat at the moment.

What I find odd about this public outrage is that the overwhelming majority haven't a clue what is in most of the products they buy anyway. If they did the nation (and western world in general) would be a whole lot healthier.

However, the agency has ordered urgent tests on the lasagne for the veterinary drug phenylbutazone. Meat from animals treated with "bute" is not allowed to enter the food chain in Britain as it may pose a risk to human health.

Bute isn't going to kill anyone in small exposure. It was once marketed for humans for heaven's sake. They took it off the list because it's supposedly linked to causing cancer - but what isn't these days?

I've probably inhaled more of it directly, by accident (though the strawberry flavoured scent is yummmmy) than what those people will end up consuming through their boxed meals.

Tabloid scare stories.

What kind of wine do you pair with horse?

French wine. They are the major European consumers of horse meat.

A juicy Red Vin de Table could be appropriate as long as the wine is wholly French. Anything labelled 'from various countries' is worse than anti-freeze.

it depends on how it is prepared and what else is being served with it.

It can be gamey, but it's a cross between beef and venison. Lean and the colour can very quite a bit depending on the age of the animal.

Gamey = horsey.

What's the big deal? I had a neighbor use to go to horse auctions buy horses and take them to the slaughter house that was outside of Dallas the meat would be sold in New Jersey and France.

Because it's fraud. The press are trying to sell it as a health scare, because that's a far sexier story to feed to retards, but the real story is industrial scale fraud.

i don't eat prepackaged frozen meals. that shit is nasty.
