I don't know if this has been on here before, but these are the people opposing healthcare. This is what passes for intelligent discourse in their circle. I have to applaud the restraint of the healthcare supporters for not tearing into these people. I couldn't do it. I can't stand to see someone more vulnerable being victimized, and that's just what this was. A non-physical assault.

There's a special place in hell for those rat bastards.

But is he for real?

Our local cast of characters leave home in the AM, in costume, headed for the major intersections to panhandle. A few sell papers first, then drag out their canes and walkers and bandages.

$150,000.....someones getting seriously rich and it isn't the surgeon...

I'm not sure what surgical procedure this man had to alleviate his Parkinson's symptoms but I only know of two and up here in Canada, total costs would be in the neighborhood of $20,000 to $25,000 tops for either one. That's surgeon, anaesthetist, OR time, nursing care, surgical bed for the duration and all sundry meds, lab work and medical imaging.

That it costs $150,000 in the US is one more reason to get rid of the abomination that passes for free enterprise health care in the land of E Pluribus Unum. Out of the 150 grand that it cost, about 125 grand got eaten by...God knows what.

The fact that the surgery is 100% covered by Medicare up here is merely a bonus. If people would come to grips with what is being scammed down there, even the morons would see that there's got to be a better way.

No, he's just a clever panhandler who takes his disguise seriously.....

He's a nuclear engineer with a PhD from Cornell. He stopped working five years ago because of his illness. Unlike you, he's for real. That is, unless you go with the idea that he had neurosurgery to mimic Parkinson's to increase his panhandling income. Moron...

The comments on that video, and by the usual suspects here, once again demonstrates that ideology isn't about being good, it's about being right.

There is this delusion by people opposed to healthcare reform that these bad things can't happen to them. There are lots of ways that it can happen to you, regardless of how financially secure you think you are. An insurance company thinks you are now too sick to cover, even after 30 years of your premiums, THEY WILL find a way to get rid of you. Your employer decides to no longer carry health insurance on you to save money, YOU WILL lose your insurance. (Happened to me last year.) You're independently wealthy and can pay whatever comes along? Some of these procedures can run into the millions of dollars over the course of treatment. How long will you remain independently wealthy?

Healthcare reform is good for everyone, even those too fucking stupid and shortsighted to see it. If this bill is defeated anyone who thinks their insurance is safe had better think again. A loss on this bill will trigger carte blanche for these insurance companies and many employers to activate their nuclear "fuck you" option. If this bill loses we, all of us, lose.

In your case, youre neither good nor right; youre a parasite.

What you say about insurance companies is true, and it has nuthin to do with hospital costs, lawyers, Mexicans, and people who abuse their bodies and insurance.

Here in Florida we chased the home insurers out of the state and created a public option; it increased premiums several times and still doesnt cover its liability. And it wont so long as people build homes on the beaches.

ObamaCare is gonna increase unemployment cuz more jobs are going to China and India; small fry employers are gonna let people go.

Enjoy it.

There is a very good reason it costs 150K here in the state...because of all those who don't pay their medical bills and it's not because they can't get insurance...well they can't but not because of any pre-existing condition or they can't afford it, it's because they are here illegally and are to busy sending all the money the make back to their home land. They use emergency rooms like a doctors office, give a false name and address and skip out on the bill. So that amount is now added to all the other peoples bills who do a) have insurance or b) are responsible citizens and pay their bills.

And guess what...ObamaCare doesn't even address this problem. In fact Obama wanted the illegals to be covered...while the citizens paid or it all.

Question: If I visit Canada and become ill does your socialized medical care fix me up? Do I get billed? Or is if free? And if I'm billed and skip on the bill, who pays?

You can always go to Washington and spit on smarter people than you. That should help you feel better.

No sorry, I don't stoop to your level of immaturity. I think I saw you spitting on those poor guys as they returned from Viet Nam in the SFO airport, didn't I? Call them traitors and baby killers. That was you wasn't it?

Right, Zeb. You were there. 40 years ago. I don't recall anyone on this board condoning that behavior, even though precious little evidence exists to prove it ever happened. You're fencing at phantoms.

Regardless, is your point that only spitting on certain people pisses you off? Spitting is fine, such is life? That how Texans handle their shit?

Grade eight rocket science.......

People who think that Canada is a socialized country should have a chat with the current Prime Minister, Stephen Harper (no relation). He heads the Conservative Party which was formed by a union of his old Reform Party and the Progressive Conservatives. The Reform Party, of which Harper was chief strategist, was about as socialist as Margaret Thatcher.

A government run health care system isn't a socialist policy. It's a small "c" conservative policy in that it makes sense, works and is one hell of a lot less inefficient than what you have. Provincial Ministries of Health have zero incentive to waste enormous resources in a patchwork quilt of paper work and for-profit scamming because they don't make a dime. Instead of having a boatload of insurance carriers, all scrambling to make a piss pot full of cash, in the grand tradition of "Cash Flow" (We love to take it in and hate to let it go out), there's one pot of cash from tax dollars premiums and there's only one beneficiary, the tax payers who pay the for the system and benefit from the system. It's small "c" conservative business principles. Minimize the overhead and use the savings to fund the system. Replace "Socialized Medicine" with a well run corporation and you should get the idea. And the system is well run because nobody makes a dime by running it poorly. How difficult is this?

Health care isn't free anywhere. If you get sick up here you'll be cared for without question and yes, you get billed. Canadian health care tax dollars are for Canadian taxpayers. If you can't pay, it's ignored. If there's one thing a sensible system knows, it's that money spent chasing a delinquent bill is a waste of money. If it's an emergency, it's taken care of. If it's not, well, you can get back to the US from anywhere in Canada in a few hours. Jets go 800 kph. (Thats 500 mph) Do the math. All Canadian docs have chuckle stories about Americans showing up in Emerg and wondering why it's not free. One guy up on holiday that I dealt with in Emerg decided he wanted his heart valve swapped out while he was here. The indignation, red faced cursing and in-your-face aggression when I said no was a farce worthy of performance street theatre. When politeness failed and "Communication Failure" was called (he lashed out physically at a nurse) my buddy MD on call decked him before I could. After he enjoyed the hospitality of the "Queen's Cowboys" overnight, he was on a plane, after deciding that retreat was the better part of valor. (It was that or have a chat with the judge.)

Jeez everyone, I did more difficult problem solving in grade eight math. What is so objectionable about saving a packet of billions and getting better care for all, in the process. Private Insurance companies will shit their pants but fuck the bastards. The pissing match down there reminds me of people willing to spend a fortuna, endlessly, just to have that smug look of "Freedom and Democracy" on their faces when it's been up here all along. This is Canada!! It's not the People's Republic of Socialist Kanada.

Anyone care for a cold one? Eh?

If you are seriously ill, I think England is a good place to be.
The service might be top-heavy and dominated by politicians, Quangoes, and Management types, but you WILL get treated.

Hey dickhead, 40 years ago I was there, of course you weren't (probably cowering in some Canadians basement - or just a gleem in your daddy's eye) as the crowd shouted and spit on the wounded soldiers returning from Viet Nam.

Sure precious little in your minds eye. There is TV footage of it happening. Of course no one dare show it now a days, especially the leftist media who promulgated the incidents to increase viewership. But I guess the only evidence you would believe is that which is puked up by the one you worship.

I really feel sorry for you...your world view must really be fucked up. I bet you sit in your basement, no real life friends, in your dirty pj's pounding away at the keyboard, despising everything and everyone who has more then you.

Thanks, you answered my question, which I'm sure will be smirked at by many.

Hey ROB, you asshole, Canada is just for Canadians too!

In stark contrast... I like our system just the way it fucking is. Our hospitals are teaming with doctors and staff that are suing poor people into bankruptcy, over needed treatment. Here you can die from something that is preventable, only because you don't have the money...Im giving it the thumbs up and gonna say "thats for me!".
Just joking...

Hell healthcare didn't even used to be this tight here when I was a kid 30 years ago.

You just hit the nail right on the head, and yet conservatives will never, ever acknowledge this reality. Stephen55 pretty much summed it up: it's about capitalist rhetoric and this inability of so many Americans to view public options as anything except as a step down the slippery slope toward communism.
