I've seen some people here mention a process you can request of Laural to get your scores cleaned up a bit?

What is this process? What, specifically, is it cleaning up? Idly curious if I should be asking for this...

Cheers

It's usually called a "sweep." It's hard to say exactly what happens, but the idea is that the sweep removes votes that could be deemed invalid. The normal effect is to remove low votes and increase the score, but it can remove high votes as well.

The site does sweeps every now and then so there isn't usually a lot of reason to ask for them. I haven't seen evidence that they've done a sweep recently, so maybe it's about time.

Darkniciad would know more, but as I understand it, the sweeps remove what are determined to be suspicious votes, such as a lot of 1s (or even 5s) from the same IP address, that sort of thing.

I think it's less about "cleaning up" than trying to keep a bit of a level playing field and prevent trolls and the like from doing too much damage to stories.

If you feel that someone(s) are unfairly targeting your story(ies), you could ask Laurel or Manu about it (I understand Manu handle the tech side of the site) and they might be able to do a sweep on that request. NotWise is correct, though, in that sweeps are already done periodically. (How and when are not known, which I think is a good idea.)

There was a sweep a week or so ago, I think. One of my new stories lost half a dozen votes - a one-bomb and must have been several fives, because the overall score dropped. My guess is someone scoring, but not seeing the stars change colour, and doing multiple submits. Previous threads have speculated on this.

You can request a sweep via the "report story" button on the relevant story. Use the text box to say something like "Author requesting sweep for all my stories", or whichever ones you do want.

If you PM Laurel for a sweep, she'll ask you to use the report method anyway.
