Certain yoga poses aggravate my sciatic nerve.

Does anyone know of any stretches that I can do right now to relieve the pain?

I mentioned it to the instructor last week & she told me that there are some stretches that we can do to help. But last week the nerve didn't bother me. About an hour after yesterday's class, I can hardly sit or move without feeling it. I'm going to ask her next weekend about what I can do, but need some help for right now.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

hey there.... ok, some excersizes that helped me, were,

*on your hands and knees- arch your backand hold for a few seconds {helps align everything}

*on your back on the floor {dont do it on the bed, doesnt work} put your feet on the floor, and push your hips upwhile leaving your shoulders on the ground {this one might hurt at first}

the only other really good thing i can tell you, is before you go to yoga, get some heavy duty muscle rub, and rub it in to your lower back. i use tigerbalm soft, its wonderful {but pretty hard to find}

good luck! let me know if they hlep?! :)

Instead of numbing the pain with tigerbalm, maybe you should consult a Chiropractor about the cause of the pain and have it treated.

Better yet, stay the fuck away from Chiro-Quackers. I'd let a voodoo woman dance around me with a string of bones, while spitting chicken blood in my eyes, before I'd let a chiropractor anywhere near my body.

for the sciatica, you want very basic streches, like trying to touch your toes. If it hurts, don't do it. Obiviously if it hurts, that means that you're messing with whatever is causing your sciatica to flair up.

If you strenghten your muscles that helps a lot. crunches. squats, things that strenghten the sbdominal muscles, the back muscles, the butt muscles... that's what i had to do for physical therapy when i had herniated disks and horrrrribleee sciatica. I still do my exercizes, and i haven't had many problems since. yay!

Ignorance knows no bounds.

"ok, WHO are you talking to?"

Probably the person who started this thread asking for advice on Sciatic nerve problems.

you seriously need to start addressing that then. a condescending attitude does not make people want to listen very much does it!? Denae asked a question, and a few of us answered it. she didnt ask should she go to the doc, she asked for some excersizes/stretches.

also, have you ever thought, that some people cant go to the chiropractor?? not all insurances cover it... not everyone is insured... and sometimes, it just doesnt help.

obviously your new to Lit, and you might not get the moods of the board, so i'll give u the benefit of the doubt, but, maybe you should think about asking questions, instead of trying to come across more intelligent than other people. its highly annoying.

I was not intending to be condescending towards her. I was merely pointing out that taking aspirin for chronic headaches may not be the best approach. Also I offered it as an option because she may not have thought about getting treatment as an option for her condition.

As a former sufferer of sciatic pain, it sounds to me like something you are doing is aggravating your condition. I achieved relief by regular sessions with a good massage therapist. She has also given me suggestions for excercises to help keep the pain away. Ask around, maybe even get a referral from your doctor--you don't want to waste your money on a "fluff & buff" masseusse. Hope this is in any way helpful to you.

I actually do yoga to help treat my sciatic nerve pain that is caused by a herniated disc in my nerve canal.

It's called Upward Facing Dog will help. Though, I sometimes leave my legs on the floor, and will just press my upper body up with my arms.

For me, this helps to keep the pain shooting down my leg more. Do you happen to know why you have the sciatica? Do you have a back condition?

This is Yoga Journal's set of poses with the therapeutic application of helping relieve sciatica.

Some of them, I would not even consider without your yoga instructor.

I do get massages to help with the pain - but I also stretch myself out pretty well. Hope this helps!

Thank you to everyone

to 5pintshefound, ammre, coy_one: I appreciate the stretches, that's what I'm looking for right now.

Answer to Coy_One's question: I've never had any type of back problem or anything else like this. I first noticed it after my 2nd yoga session (which was a week after the first). I thought I had just used muscles that I hadn't used in a long time, but then I had a hard time even finding a comfortable position in which to sit. I stayed away from yoga for a couple of months. I saw the physcian assistant at my doctor's office, as I had an appointment for something else, and she thought it was either a sciatic nerve problem or a torn muscle.

The pain didn't last too long this time, but I'm definitely going to talk to the yoga instructor and go from there.

Thank you again everyone for suggestions.
