My vote? Love to read it.

All brands~ from Niven to Heinlein, from Asimov to Robinson...

Hardcore space opera to urban mythologies based on whatifs like DeLint or LeGuin

BUT I can not force myself to watch sci-fi movies...seriously. I have tried and I just don't get it.

And TV?? After the craziness of Stark Trek, Next Gen, DS9, Battlestar Galactica? Ugh. Eww. No thanks. Just let me read it. Better for my brain.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever met a strictly "written" sci fi lover.

Do you not like the visual sci fi because it doesn't match up to what you visualize while reading?

That is part of it~my brain visualizes things so much better than what I see on the screen. There is a vastness in my imagination that becomes smaller when I look at it in a moving medium.

And movies based on ideas of certain authors ie I Robot, Starship Troopers? It sucks! Half the time what they show and what is written do not match, for goodness sake!!! I am anal about that.

I just prefer to let my imagination make up the faces and places...makes it better for me. (Oddly enough that doesn't matter when it comes to manga/anime just sci-fi...)

The whole cast was really nice. (Well, except for one guy but I won't name names). But Kevin, he's a class act all the way.

Had one of the best days of my entire life working on that show.

Minnesota nice isn't always Minnesota passive-aggressive. :)

Sci Fi

I love Sci Fi and have always felt that even bad Sci Fi has a place, because bad Sci Fi is one of the best things to shred.Especially bad or poorly done movies since they just provide so many places for things to be off kilter. I was very into the Dystopian genre for the better part of two years thanks to a college class. Now I find myself exploring the classics again, Asimov and Le Guin, in particular.

I love sci-fi; I've watched every Star Trek episode and a few of the movies, the first three Star Wars movies, 2001 and some other movies and read Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert, among others.

@ Luna_Wolf72 & others

Yes, it's unusual to have someone who just likes the "written" form of a given genre. Most genre material (any medium, any genre) tends to be fluff and formulaic, and so there is a tendency for the fans to be seeking passive entertainment, and watching TV and movies is passive-r than reading a book.

At the same time, I can completely understand why, particularly with sci-fi, it's better written. The way sci-fi looks is so much a part of the time when it was produced, and if the vision of the designers doesn't match the vision of the viewer, it can suck.

I'll just watched Blade Runner for the first time in a decade or so and I have to say it looks ridiculous. I love it, but except Deckard, who is basic gumshoe-in-trench-coat, the costumes are really bad. The future in 1982 looked pretty goofy. I won't even go into how the future looked in the late 60s. But you don't have that problem with 1984, because it's a book, and you supply the visuals in a stylisticly appropriate way.

An aside, I also want to note that the Nexus 6 started rolling off the line in 2016. That means I can get a Pris soon. Of course, it'll be illegal unless I move to the off-world colonies, but that would give my ex too much satisfaction. [/rant]

TV and movies do mess books up...a lot! However, at least from a visual standpoint, it's great to get some things "set in stone". Some of the descriptions in books are so vague, that, I wish they'd get more technical....
Then again, book covers at times appear related to the books they're on only via the glue that binds them together....

Ooo! One of my favourite sci fi movies of all time is on right now. "The Abyss". So underrated.

What was the plot of that thing.

First it's like underwater cowboys. Then drama, then horror/monster, then alien, then natural catastrophe.

and that bitch should have been brain dead. How much time without O?

Mammalian dive reflex. Crazy shit but true.

Didn't they also use that... liquid substance that allowed for oxygen to be transferred through the lungs? What's more, isn't something like that a real thing? Or have I been reading sci-fi for way too long?

Interesting but hard to picture.

Surly after that ordeal she must at minimum A. be mentally retarded, and B. have a crumbled ribcage.

Seriously if, how long from her not being able to breath, till that sub fully filled, then how long for him to swim her back, plus the 5 minutes of CPR. That's like 20 minutes and not one breath.

Are you talking about Lindsey? The love interest?
Mind you, 20 minutes might be a stretch, but the Russians are doing surgeries where they cut blood flow to the brain and preserve it intact for ..8 minutes by lowering body temp. Think Fry from Futurama :D

Granted, 8 minutes is not 20, but when has Hollywood ever really understood or cared for science?

Yes they did. Yes it is. No you haven't. :)

Dudes, people have "died" and have been brought back to life hours, yes hours, later with no brain damage because of Mammalian Dive Reflex. It's the real deal. Of course, they aren't really "dead" but close enough to it that it would appear so to the untrained eye.

I know someone who has experienced it.

Hey, I learned something today. Awesome.

You are putting me on. Neurons go through oxygen like a woman goes through chocolate. Could you survive 20 minutes without chocolate and be mentally spared?

The only way I can think of, that cold can prevent drowning death is if all enzymes “froze” simultaneously in such a way that no metabolic component is more reactive than its predecessor. Now assuming all human enzyme functions follow this positive relationship with temperature that I’m looking at on this cheap ass graph here. At 20C rate of reaction is cut in about half, so theoretically it should take twice as long for oxygen to be consumed. Say it takes about 5 minutes for brain damage due to O deprivation (which I think is generous), at 20C its 10 min, 10C 12.5 min, 5C is 14 min. around 1C lets say 15 minutes, and that’s about as cold as you can get in water before you’re in an ice block. Disregarding salt and other such f words. Now lets say all the bodies oxygen is diverted to the brain with your reflex, which would be an extra 80%, so you multiply by 5, and 75 minutes.

-_-

Damn, that is pretty long, theoretically.

I can leave you drowning, have lunch, come back and still save your ass, all in one of your breaths.

And according to my math it would take about 2,500 food Cals to bring the average person back up to body temp. Which would also need to be simultaneous. 1 breath, 1 hour, a whole days worth of exercise.

It’s the new “cold water face splash hypothermic asphyxiation cerebral hypoxia preventing kink / exercise thing”. Who wants to go first?

Hmph! You've never seen me eat chocolate.

No thanks. But I did find this...to shed a little bit of light on its validity....

Lousy show, awesome catering. :)

Kevin Sorbo is sooooooooooo nice. Seriously nice. Actually, I don't know what it is about sci fi shows but the cast and crews on them always seemed to be really cool and really...normal.

What is this thing, "normal"?

LMAO!

Seriously, I'm thrilled that you did that show, had awesome catering and find sci fi cast and crews to be cool!

:D
