Sci-fi/ Fantasy idea

I don't have enough science knowledge to make the background to this believable, but someone must... My idea is a guy somehow enters a parallel universe where he/ his other self is married to his childhood sweetheart or some woman the protagonist desires, so he plans to kill his other self in that dimension/universe and take his place. If anyone feels like writing about this, go for it and good luck.

If he actually murdered some version of himself he'd be a pretty unsympathetic protagonist. I've seen versions where the main character went to an alternate universe where he had died as a child done fairly well, and also ones where the main character and his alternate both wanted to switch, they were equally happy or equally unhappy with the results. Or of course the version where the character and his alternate instantly think it's awesome to have a twin and decide to live together, either seducing people as a team or becoming each others' lovers.

I agree that a murdering protagonist would be a tough sell.

As to the technology involved, there is no reason to need to know a lot about science. Alternate dimensions have been theorized for decades and are an accepted part of sci-fi. What needs work is why the protagonist has access to alternate dimension travel. Is this far in the future where many people do? Is he a research physicist? Is it an accident. No one knows how to access alternate dimensions so just about anything you make up is valid. I guess the one thing I would add is that most physical (as opposed to spiritual) explanations that involve inter-dimensional should probably include some event that creates large amounts of energy, like a lighting strike, nuclear explosion, etc.

Completely off-topic but as I was contemplating the story line how about a narcissistic fetish. The man goes to an alternate universe, meets himself and his wife and becomes completely jealous. He kidnaps himself, planning to kill his other self, but falls in love with himself instead. lol.
