Candidate Schwarzenegger Says to Debate Rivals
By Adam Tanner
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Arnold Schwarzenegger, famous on film for beating and blowing up opponents, not to mention occasionally gunning them down, said on Monday that he was ready to engage in political combat -- a debate.
He said he wanted to debate Gov. Gray Davis and other leading candidates for California's top job.
California voters reelected Democrat Davis in November, but a Republican-funded petition effort succeeded in forcing the first recall vote against a governor in the state's history. The ballot is set for Oct. 7.
"I intend to debate Gray Davis and the other major candidates on the ballot," the Austrian-born Republican actor said in a statement.
Schwarzenegger said Republican Congressman David Dreier, who has already endorsed the star of the "Terminator" films, would negotiate the terms of any debates in which he participates.
"Californians are going to love seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger debating Gray Davis and the other candidates," Dreier said.
In the longest ballot in California history, 135 candidates ranging from Davis' deputy -- Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante -- to Hustler publisher Larry Flynt are seeking Davis' job.
It is unclear whether Davis would agree to debate, as he is not directly competing with the replacement candidates. Voters will decide the question of whether the governor, unpopular over the state's fiscal problems, keeps his job. Then, on a second question, voters can state a preference for a replacement.
DEBATES AND ENTERTAINMENT
Any serious debate will include just a fraction of the total pool of candidates, perhaps based on those leading in surveys. A Field Poll released on Saturday found Democrat Bustamante in first place with 25 percent, followed by Schwarzenegger at 22 percent, and then three Republicans, State Sen. Tom McClintock, businessman Bill Simon and former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth.
State radio and TV broadcasters have scheduled a 90-minute debate for the leading candidates on Sept. 17. They excluded Davis from that event, but will include the governor in a separate program on the pros and cons of the recall.
Davis Spokesman Gabe Sanchez said, "Gray Davis isn't on the same part of the ballot as Arnold, Angelyne, Gary Coleman, Larry Flynt and all the others .... The candidates' debate should be for up to all 135 of those people"
