In that abandoned high school, just three months after he graduated, six months after he turned eighteen, Bruno Di Salvo lit up a cigarette as he scavenged through the building for anything useful. The past month or so had been crazy, hairy even, what with the utter collapse and breakdown of law and order, even civilization itself. Part of Bruno would regret that he would never attend John C. Fremont High School ever again.
Part of him was relieved never to have to deal with that silliness again. This was a crazy, fucked-up world nowadays, especially with that damn plague cutting a wide swathe through the human population in the wake of total disintegration of any kind of government or social order, but it was one where he could more easily make his mark. He knew that much at least.
That was when Bruno found her...Ms. Sarah Wise. Ms. Wise had been his homeroom and English teacher for his senior year, less than a year before. She was thirty years old, so not that radically older than him..just about twelve years' difference. To his knowledge, she had never been married.
And he thought that she was the sexiest woman alive. Even now, hiding in a deserted school cafeteria, he thought so. He was never a one-woman man, had already dumped two girlfriends in the past couple of months for getting jealous of him, but if he was forced with a gun to his head to marry and be faithful to just one woman, but he got to pick that woman..he'd choose Sarah Wise any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Even so, habit forced him to call her by her surname.
"Ms. Wise? What are you doing here? Don't you have a home? School's been out of commission for a month now. It's me..Bruno. Do you remember me?" Bruno asked her now, "do you need anything? I got trail mix with me, just in case. I don't know how safe the cafeteria food is to eat...it was already inedible before the apocalypse, let alone now," Bruno commented at last.
