But in the interview quoted, they all talked about the fact that America is clearly showing signs of starting to go that way, and how could one put an end to that.

I don't live there to be able to tell.
But people tell me that "America changed drastically within a decade or so and isn't the way it used to be". And that as far as Politics are concerned, they find people to be too emotional and serious, and that they are weary of talking politics "afraid someone might decide to get their gun out and shoot me."
