I hate sharks, they are mean and scary. I know they are just supposed to be hungry and we are supposed to look like fish food, but they seem to enjoy attacking people.

This is not funny. Even though I make a lot of jokes I am posting this to see if anyone is as scared of sharks as me. It is worse than usual ..... 3 sharks attacked this person. I got goosebumps.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Up to three sharks may have been involved in the fatal attack on a 21-year-old woman off an island in eastern Australia, police said Sunday.

The woman, whose identity was not immediately released, died late Saturday after being attacked near North Stradbroke Island, east of the Queensland state capital Brisbane.

Queensland state police inspector Peter Harding said officers were searching for the sharks and had closed several nearby beaches.

"If we found them (the sharks) I suppose we would try to retrieve them and see if they have any body parts," Harding said. "The idea is to retrieve what we can."

The woman was swimming with a friends from a church group in shallow water about 50 feet offshore when the shark attacked, local media reports said. The woman's dog was also in the water.

The woman was airlifted to a Brisbane hospital where she had to have both arms amputated just below the elbow, according to Queensland Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman Helen Anderson. She also suffered deep wounds to her legs and torso, Anderson said.

Harding said the severity of the woman's injuries indicated she may have been attacked by a group of bull sharks, a species known for aggressive behavior this time of year.

"She was bleeding quite heavily ... (from) what I've seen and what I've been told, there was more than one shark involved, there could have been up to three," Harding said.

It's called a feeding frenzy, once blood is in the water they all start to feed. They were lucky it was just three!

I'm shark-phobic too. No way I'll be swimming in the ocean, kthnx.

(good thing I live in the middle and not on the ends.)

Hi sarah.

I was reading this thing that was supposed to make you feel better about sharks. They said most sharks won't bite you, and to prove it they said if you have ever been in the ocean waist deep, then you were within 15 feet of a shark.

I didn't feel better.

I am never going in the ocean again.

I want a spear-gun before I go in a swimming pool now.

 :rose:

i'm sorry you're scared of sharks but they are gods creatures and are only trying to survive in a harsh world not of their making. we should actually be awe inspired by thier beauty and ability to survive. instead mankind hunts them down and kills them whenever conveniant. if we were to do that to say, whales, the world would be outraged, wait we've done that and some countries still do. sharks are just living their life as they have for far longer then man has been on this earth.

I saw a video not long ago about piranhas attacking a goldfish.

Someone thought it was funny and sent me the link. No, it wasn't funny, and I'm still sorry I viewed it.

They dropped the goldfish in the tank with an assortment of fishes, including piranhas. It was fine for a couple of seconds but then one of the five predator fishes "tasted" it. The goldfish tried to get away but was pursued to the other end of the huge tank as the five fish worked together. They strategically ate the fins first, and as the goldfish sank to the bottom of the tank they quickly finished it off.

Horrible.

Some sharks are protected species here in Aus....and considering the coastline of this country...you are at far less risk of shark attack than being killed on the roads.

Unfortunately sharks are much maligned......they should always be treated with respect not fear.....

I have caught them, eaten them; my daughter and house mate have dived with them.....we are all here to attest to their amazing capabilities and their evil beauty.

Sharks are mindless eating machines. They aren't evil, they aren't out to destroy mankind, they are merely natural predators. And they're very good at what they do.

But that doesn't ease the mind of ocean swimmers, of course. What on earth could compare to a death by being eaten alive?

being slowly lowered into a wood chipper feet first?

stay out of the ocean, they certainly don't come into your living room and feed.

Some special place, or generally?

Because when I step put into the nearest ocean (which I gladly do, unless when it's frozen over), I'm about 700 miles from the nearest shark.

I fell in love with sharks after the movie Jaws was released. I read every book I could find, studied extensively (and this was when I was in junior high). For a time I thought I'd become an oceanographer - my grandfather was a commercial fisherman.

But no.

Still, sharks should be admired, not feared. And comparatively, there are not really very many humans killed or injured from shark attack.

The news bulletins should mention it's not wise to swim with dogs.

But thats something you know if you grow up in shark territory......like black wetsuits make you look seal like......

We coastal dwellers forget that cityslickers and inlanders don't get the same grass roots education about safe swimming.....

Lisa, sharks scare the hell out of me. But they only do what is natural for them. Their brain is too small to think. I grew up in the Gulf of Mexico where sharks are plentiful. I've stood on the decks of boats watching migrations of sharks from the coast of Louisiana. I've watched sharks feast after a shrimper cleans his decks.
A surfer on a board is a seal to them. They have one purpose and that is to survive. Eating is their survival. They've been around much longer than mankind and are very successful at surviving.
Like you, I don't go to the ocean to swim. I've seen what sharks can do in RL. And knowing how stupid I can be at times, I'd be out there fishing or swimming at feeding time.
BTW, it's good to see you again. WB.

Crocodiles freak me out more though. It's a miracle Ozzies make it into their thirties. Am I right in assuming that any body of water that's connected to a river that eventually leads to the ocean, and is big enough to hold one, might have a croc in it?

And the things come out on land too! You have to be in the water to get grabbed by a shark, but for a croc to get you you just need to be near it.

Not quite right with the crocs.
They are mainly found in the north as it's nice and warm for them. They will mainly wait in the water for the feed and generally just sun themselves on the banks, but will drag something into the water for the kill if need be.
Anyone in there right mind would stay well clear of them as they are a very powerful and acient creature. Have a google for "Steve Irwin" if you want to know more.

As for sharks the attacks are rare but cause of the media hype it's like they are a common thing. As much as i feel sorry for the family and all involved the reality is that the water is a sharks domain and so if i go into the ocen then i'm playing in their yard not mine.

That post reminded me of something i saw.

A bloke was making a doco on sharks and decided to provoke one into an attack by following the thing till it got angry. So he doned the chain suit and stuff and set off, what i remember the most is that when they get pissed they will start swimming side to side, a little at first the right trough to 90 degrees side to side when really pissed. After a bit of this if you don't back off, BAMM it just goes for you.

So, what happened to the dog?

A quote from www.zoo.nsw.gov.au about shark attacks

On average there are 2-3 deaths per year from Bee stings in Australia (Dr van Nunen Royal North Shore Hospital Allergy Unit. Feb 3rd 1989. Manly Daily). Three people died from bee stings in 1995 (Aust. Bureau of Statistics). On average, there is less than one person per year killed by shark attack in Australia over the last 200 years

Now how many people fear bees?
