Long story short- I have a movie date on Sunday, and she's asked me to bring along a scary movie (horror movie). However, I rarely watch those, so I don't keep abreast of the horror movie... uhh...scene. Could you guys recommend anything? And why would you recommend it?
Thank you!

Hmmm...Hellraiser is one of my favorites. Very well done, scary but also makes you think a bit...Sadistic type horror movie.

If you want pure gore... House of 1000 Corpses. Little plot..lots of gore...

Martyrs. Easily the most disturbing movie I've seen in a long time. Not the greatest movie ever made, but damn if the torture wasn't scary and horrible and often too much for me.

ETA: I don't know how netflixable it is, though. It's French, but pretty new.

Classics: I like the Poltergeist movies or the old Amityville movies.

Newer: The Saw movies are good or perhaps Scream.

Cheesy: For a good laugh, try Critters. That was a fun one.

Hmmmmm you do not want to get something so terrifying it kills the mood for anything that comes after...

But feeling a little scared can definitely heighten the mood for later on...

I have to think about it

Snake movies scare the daylights out of me...the first Anaconda...makes me want to squeal and look around for snakes just thinking about it.

For suspense, anything of Hitchcock's movies. "Vertigo" and "North by Northwest" are excellent. I'd suggest "Rear Window". It's one of my favorites. These are classics. If you want classic scary, Hitchcock's "Psycho" is really good as well as the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still", which is a science fiction story. Don't get the remakes of either of these, or the sequels, because they are lame.

Then, there is "The Shining", "The Exorcist", "Phantasm", and the first "Halloween". On a slightly different note, there is a Robin Williams movie that is part romance, part fantasy and part horror called "What Dreams May Come". It has very nice special effects and a very nice story. There is some horror in it that will seem very real because it involves heaven and hell. Also, a thriller called "The Boys From Brazil" is good. All of these might not be really classified as horror, but scary as hell.

There was a British production company called Hammer productions that I don't think did a bad horror movie. They all in black and white, but the story is always a thriller. I remember going to a drive in movie with a friend many years ago, where several Hammer production movies were being shown. We were looking at each other very suspiciously, all the way home. The movies just affected us that way.

I'm not much of a fan of the gory films. To me, most of them have no real plot and are only sensationalistic crap. You're always waiting for the next killing, and how gory it will be. That's the plot in a nutshell. So I haven't given you that many actual horror movies. The ones I've listed are scary, but mostly in the suspense area, I'd guess. Very little, if any, gore in most of them, but they all have excellent plots that will give you a thrill...and in my opinion, a better thrill than one from gore.

There are a lot of good horror movies. It all depends on if you are looking for the science fiction kind, the blood and guts kind, the mysterious and unknown evil kind, or the monster kind. Horror is in the eye of the fan. In my opinion, gore just wastes good ketchup.

it depends...

I'm kind of a wuss compared to my friends. If you like watching horror movies in the dark, in absolute silence, the only sounds your frightened breathing, then suspense movies are good
-Grudge movies
-The Ring
-
If you like to watch gory movies, then try these.
-Seven
-Any of the Hannibal Lecter movies

I am deeply embarrassed to say that circumstances conspired against me (didn't have time to get a movie from Netflix)...and, thus, I went with "The Devil" by Shyamalan. I am deeply ashamed. If you wish to disconsider me as a human being, and heap upon me the title or troll, then, by all means, I am a troll, who watches M. Night Shyamalan movies, thus further funding that individual.

Yours in shame,
Teknight

(On a serious note, thanks for everyone's suggestions, I'll keep 'em in mind for next time, when I'll actually be able to get one/some of those movies)

I've never heard about this Shyamalan guy, if that tells you anything. But, looking at the promo of "Devil", this is a movie that happens to 5 people stuck in an elevator? Oh, excuse me...one of them turns out to be the  himself.

I'm not saying it isn't a good movie, because I haven't seen it. And the bulk of the movie happens inside of a stalled elevator? It just seems that seeing the same scene would get a little old after an hour or so.

To help emphasize your shame, I'll add a couple more movies to the SHOULD see list.
I think someone has already mentioned "Silence of the Lambs", and I agree that it's a good movie. But, I don't consider it that scary, but don't go by my opinion, because I have friends who thought "The Exorcist" was VERY scary and while I thought it was good, I didn't think it was scary. Also mentioned by someone else, "Se7en" is a very good suspense movie. While I don't consider it horror, it will definitely keep your interest.

What I think would be more in the horror category for me would be something that's based on a true story, like "In Cold Blood". While you know the outcome, the story of how it came to happen and to such nice people is the stuff of a very gripping story.

The only good thing about Shyamalan is that he films all of his movies in and around Philadelphia, which is my hometown. I at least get to see some things from "home" if I am forced to sit through one of his films.

Regardless of movie choice (and you at least have many good suggestions for next time) I hope your date went well. :)
