(Sumter) - A gay couple looking to rent a hotel room say they were turned away because of their sexuality.

"She wasn't discreet about it," said Jason Pickel, referring to a hotel employee. "She was not apologetic. She just said, 'We do not rent to gay people.'"

For the past two and a half years, Pickel and Darren Black Bear have been in a committed relationship. During a search for a temporary home, the couple says it went to Affordable Suites of America, a long-term stay hotel located on Gion Street in Sumter.

"We were inquiring about the price, deposits, extra person fee, and she asked who the room was going to be for, and I said for my partner and I,” Pickel said. “She said, 'Oh we don't rent to multiple people of the same sex.' I said, so you don't rent to gay couples? She said, 'No, we don't rent to gay people at all.'"

The website for Affordable Suites of America states the company does not allow children or pets in its suites, but there is no mention of same sex couples.

News19 contacted the hotel, posing as a potential renter, and inquired about two men staying in the same room. The receptionist who answered the phone told us the following: “Our policy is we don’t rent to two people of the same sex if we only have one bed.” “Is that your policy,” we asked. “That’s corporate policy because they only have one sleeping area.” We then asked, “Okay, but they can't share the bed?” "I suppose they could, but most men don’t want to," she said.

However, when News19 called the owner of the hotel, Carroll Atkisson, he says there had been some confusion. He says any couple can come to the place and they will rent to them, period. Atkisson says the policy was not mean to target homosexuals. He says they were just trying to stop two single people from being in the same bed.

Pickel and Black Bear say they still plan to seek legal action. "Everyone is floored, shocked and outraged," said Pickel. "We have contacted some of our friends who are activists."

Currently, there is no state law preventing a hotel from refusing service to a same-sex couple. However, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, gender, disability, or marital status.

"If they have a policy, it has to be maintained fair and equitably," says Tom Sponseller, President of the Hospitality Association of South Carolina. "At the beach, for example, because there are different bike weekends at the beach, that policy has to be enforced, and consistent."

There is currently a bill in the State Senate that addresses this issue. The measure, proposed by Charleston Democrat Robert Ford, would expand the Lodging Establishment Act to include prohibition of discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Thanks for once again, bringing news to our attention Queersetti.

Discrimination in the States seems to be more common than I would have thought. My partner and I flew to Las Vegas recently but were forced to fill out to separate customs forms, and speak separately to the customs agent.

When we told him we were a same-sex couple he said "in the US we don't recognize any of that kinda stuff, you have get back in line and fill out two forms, then see me separately."

We also got stared at a lot, even in Las Vegas, one lady even elbowed her husband, stopped and pointed at us when we were holding hands, in Vegas!

(I made sure I gave C a peck on the cheek when that happened :D )

Thank heavens we aren´t that screwed here. But still there are discrimination, but seeing two girls or two men kissing aren´t really being that discriminated here. Except if you are at bigger places . Where fanatics are at large. That is why I am not out and proud where I live. Because of fanatics. Pick your own fanatic. I don´t. But sexual discrimination is just fuckedup, as other kinds of discrimination.

same reason i won't dress in public until i feel i can pass easily.

we as a whole community really need to start standing up and fighting back kinda like nonviolent protest kinda like MLK jr. used to fight discrimination due to race.

I fight back (non-violently)

That's why I live out and proud, might make it tougher on me, but easier for the next generation.

I think that gay is the new black-and I don't mean the fashion statement, but 30 or so years ago mixed race couples were unheard of, now who even thinks about it?

only older people and some of their kids who are influenced by the poison of their parents hate

Lezli, it's incredible the difference between US and Canada. I went to visit my best friend in BC and she was talking about different things. She told me that marriage was allowed between same sex partnerships and no problems with other issues that go along with that.

That totally flabbergasted me. Right now we have maybe one or two states that allow that and that issue is going to be reviewed. Apparently, those two states don't feel that it should be allowed anymore.

Some companies are now allowing same sex partnerships for insurance purposes but there's not many out there.

Let's just hope they get the hotel sued out from under them.

That'd make me happy.

Our charter rights guarentee us freedom from discrimination on a number of counts including sexual orientation. For example, if an insurance company wanted to say I couldn't be on C's benefit plan, they would be breaking the law and could be sued.

And yes, we can get legally married here :)

That's why I hope to eventually move up there *grins* Canada is so much more 'free thinking" than the US. *laughs* Then the fact that I LOVE BC.

Down here in sunny Australia, bisexuality is the new black...or possibly the new gay...it's the new something anyway.

Being gay or lesbian has long been accepted and there's the Mardi Gras every year, but now the bi scene is becoming very hip. It's certainly quite trendy to have had at least one partner of the same sex before your 20...or so my friend's daughter tells me.

Same sex marriage was recognised here in 2004.

And it's warmer here than Canada too

I have a friend who's company offers same sex benefits, but guess what? She had to provide them with a civil union certificate. Which she did... from Massachusettes. And the HR person tells her... you have to have one from this state as this is where we are doing business. Friend: But it's not legal in this state. HR: Then i guess you don't qualify for benefits, do you?!

And Massachusets is now considering no longer having the civil union aka marriage. That is just WRONG!!!!

NJ: many things in the states are just plain WRONG!!!!! and it makes me quite angry at times, since I have so many friends over there. And sometimes I wish I had the power to change alot of things. Damn, these cases makes me so teethgrinding at times.

What sets my teeth on edge is these politicians and military higher ups that speak out and say "Homosexuality is wrong and immoral." Okay, why aren't they getting thumped by lawsuits for slander or whatever? I'm lesbian. I'm not immoral. I live by a set of guidelines. Just because I am attracted to women doesn't make me a bad person.

I'm amused by their avoidance than by their rejection.

Dance monkey, dance!

And to think it was illegal until what-1984?
