Is there any way to say thank you to people who post comments about stories or who send e-mails but do so anonymously? It means so much to know that people have taken the time to express their feelings about a story I have agonized over and I wish there was some way to express that to them.

You could post a public thank you in the public comments section of your story.

I think we all struggle with this from time to time. (Most of us, anyway.)

The suggestion from AppleBiter is a good one, but most people don't return once they've commented. Authors here will sometimes post a new thread with their thanks in it and also ask other authors to do the same, in the hopes that some readers peek in here from time to time.

Otherwise, there really isn't a good way to reach out individually.

Welcome to the AH, by the way. :rose:

amber_now26,

The best way to thank a considerate reader is to write another story for them, using all that you have learned, expending as much effort as you did before, to make it as good -- if not better -- than the story upon which they commented.

Good suggestions

Thanks for your suggestions and for the welcome. While it's probably true that readers would rarely return after posting a comment, I think I'll post a "thank you" in public comments anyway. Even if just one comes back and sees it, I'd be happy. And for those I can't reach, I'll just have to believe that somehow they know how much their efforts are appreciated.

You can also edit your profile to put a generic thanks in your bio.

why didn't i think of that???

Thanks, Impressive. Decided to follow your advice since it seems more likely that people would look at bio then return to story on which they have already commented.
