Anna clenched her jaw and listened to Paul speak to her, defending himself. She grasped the chair harder with one hand and wiped at her eyes again. She couldn't remember ever fighting with him like this, and she wondered what had changed to make them like this, like the couples they promised never to become, like the couples they were warned about when they got married. This wasn't them, and she hated the argument but she wasn't going to back down.
She listened to him, shaking her head and rolling her eyes when he talked about the labors of spending all day photographing Shakira. Yes he had a long day, but it was spent doing something he absolutely loved. Of course she loved her job too, but she didn't love spending hours tucked away in a law library searching for a way to lead her client to victory, regardless if he or she was truly innocent.
She turned when he tugged lightly at her shoulder, still avoiding his eyes. "A couple of times Paul? You know I've worked that late much much more than a couple of times. Christ that's how we met. Of course not, we didn't have plans for those nights, and I would call you to tell you I was going to be late. We had plans tonight. All I wanted was one night with you. I'm not putting this all on you. I'm putting tonight on you. We had plans and you were two hours late, you didn't call or anything. The one night we had any type of plans, the one night I needed you here and you weren't."
There was no hiding her tears now, they were freely running down her face, her face red in frustration and embarrassment. She leaned back against the desk, sitting on the edge as she wiped at her tear stained face.
