Hmm, I haven't come across this, mostly because I'm kinda far away from menopause. I talk about it with my mother. She complains about heavy periods quite a lot and I say it might be because she's pre-menopausal. She doesn't have problems with it but then I've always been very open with her. I suppose she might even welcome it. It would shut up my dad saying 'let's have twins!'. Hmm. I will try and talk about it as much as possible now.

My menopause and I are enduring a very tenuous truce at the moment.

Currently I think I'm ahead. I'm just waiting for the 'famous flasher' to come visiting again. He's been missing way too long, and I'm getting edgy.

I make sure everyone knows about it at work. Hell, if I have to suffer, so do they!!

Mars., that's really good of you re. your mom. Menopause varies for women, like everything else, but it can make you feel lonlier or alienated at times.

I was lucky and had very few hot flashes, never broke out into a drenching sweat like I'd heard about, but my sleep was very erratic. A friend 'mourned' her periods, felt a loss at losing them. Me? It's the best thing ever. However, I doubt I'll ever lose another ounce.

The secretary of a law professor I know is going through menopause and her boss is great about it, read up on it so he'd know how to deal with it and help her. Not too many men like that though.

Ooh, Perdita, I'm going to Venice and Florence in a couple of weeks. What are the must-see places? Just a couple or so of recommendations: I'm not there for long.

I don't suffer from period stress or anything like that, so I don't know what to expect from menopause. I usually have some hypothesis on how I'll behave in whatever situation, but menopause is something I have no idea about. Another thing I am entirely unsure about is infidelity. So far I'm swinging between two options:

1. Hell hath no fury
2. Utter indifference

I think it depends on how much I care about the guy.

Mars., there are plenty of books and internet info on menopause.

You lucky gurl. My first trip to Venice was just 3 days and nights so I just walked around, didn't go into any museums or even St. Mark's cathedral. If you want more than that, here are a few larger-than-life experiences:

- The Frari (a huge church full of art and choir stalls that will make you cry to think men made them)
- Hot chocolate at Cafe Quaddri, or any drink at Florian's, both in the piazza (St. Mark's Sq.) I prefer Quaddri for drinks and food, but Florian's has the most sumptuous decor.
- The staircase at 'Scala del Bovolo' (bovolo is staircase in Veneziano) in San Marco.
- Scuola de San Rocco: a museum of art that will make you swoon as you climb the huge inside stairways. In one huge salon mirrors are provided so you can better see the ceiling work.

Have a fine time, don't eat from the tourist menus. P.
