Tanya Caulfax was home from college for the winter holidays and as always she could hardly stand it. Mother and Father continued their passive-aggressive posturing and arguing while trying to win the affections of their children through endless shopping sprees and wild purchases. Tanya had chosen a different tactic, letting some risque photos be sent to her parents to show them how their precious snowflake had matured. Recently her father was horror struck to see his baby girl licking a man's cum from around her lips while her mother was aghast to see her only daughter being fingered by the sweet roommate the campus had assigned to live with her freshman year. Regardless both were beyond upset and had all but cut off Tanya financially. Aside from her school expenses she had no where to turn and not a dime to spend. Yet the holidays bring jobs and she had found a quaint little bit to afford a few odds and ends. She would Santa's Helper at the mall.

As the mall security opened the rear entrance, Tanya and the other worker bees began to mill around and get ready for their first holiday shifts.

Still a half hour before the mall opened, and the alreade bored looking guard ushered in the seasonals, scratching the stubble on his chin. "Those of you workin' the Santa booth, ya gotta go to the staging area behind Starbucks for your costumes." Yawn. "Come on, get movin'. Those little brats won't wait all day." He guided them through, swatting the last girl in on her bottom, to move her along. "Move along." He watched the stampede of young women hired to be elves flow into the mall, shaking his head. "More meat for the grinder."

Around her, Tanya noticed most of her compatriots were of roughly her own age, some younger, not many older. They ran the gamut of hair colors, but not one of them had what might be described as 'short' hair. Apparently Santa, or the mall's hiring director, preferred elves with longer hair.

Following the stream of about a dozen young woman, they arrived at the staging area behind 'Santa's Workshop'. Santa was nowhere in evidence, as yet. A sign noted that Santa would be there starting at noon. As the girls crowded into the cluttered staging area, they were surrounded by racks of costumes, and large boxes of decorations and candy canes.

A middle-aged man with a clipboard waved the young women around him and started reading off names, checking them off as each woman acknowledged him. "All right, I'm Mr. Thomas. This job is simple. You're Santa's elves and helpers. At any given time, 6 of you will be working. You're to keep the children in line, keep them entertained, and two of you will flank Santa, getting the kids on and off his lap, giving them their candycanes and moving them along." He made a few more observations about the job, and then pointed to the clothing rack. "All right, I'm going to step out for a few moments. You each need to find a costume that fits and a pair of elf ears and get dressed. The ears are self adhesive, so you shouldn't have any trouble." Setting down the clipboard, he moved to the doorway. "You all get yourselves dressed and we'll set up." With that, he stepped outside, heading straight for Starbucks, leaving the dozen women to their own devices.

It was general chaos getting the outfits to work properly. One of the girls insisted she needed leggings far too small, which seemed ludicrous. I'd kill for those legs. The smaller girl with the short blonde hair who'd been hovering over my shoulder since we walked in finally spoke up.

"Hi... I'm Abbie. Is there any chance you've done this before?"
"Sorry Abbie, I'm as new as you are. My name is Tanya by the way."

Over the next few minutes we worked together to coordinate putting our elf costumes together. Sadly we couldn't find slippers small enough for her but a few napkins stuffed into the toe fixed the majority of the problem.

"After our first break we can steal a smaller pair if it gets bad for you."
"Tanya, Santa's watching. Only naughty children steal."

The look on her face seemed so serious and I couldn't help but break out and laugh. I was growing to like Abbie, despite the high pitch of her voice and over eagerness to help other people.

After a few more minutes, Mr. Thomas walked back in, catching a few of the slower girls stuffing themselves into the costumes or adjusting their breasts in the revealing tops. Sipping on his coffee, he ordered everyone into line to inspect their costumes. Checking each girl, he made adjustments or suggestions here and there - angle of a hat, fit of stockings, size adjustments on the dress or coat. A couple girls hadn't been able to get the ears on correctly. At almost every stop, he rather visibly checked out each girl's bosom.

When he got to Tanya, he looked her over, nodding. "Pretty good job. Have you done this before? You seem to have the knack." Without waiting for a response, he moved on to Abbie, also expressing his approval of her look and preparation. Continuing down the line, he worked through the rest of the girls. Once the inspections were completed, he walked back to the front of the gathered elves.

"All right, ladies, here's your assignments. Each group will work in 2 hour shifts before moving on. I'll post the schedule, but initial assignments are..." He began pairing off the girls...candy cane bundling, errand running, head of the line organization, photography elves, etc. He came back to Tanya, pointing to her and Abbie. "And you two, being so organized and photogenic get the first shift helping out old St. Nick himself. You two will be alongside Santa, getting kids on and off his lap, and getting them candy canes when they're done. Be polite, be pretty and don't screw up."

He clapped his hands together. "Ok, you've got an hour to get this place organized and get ready. The place is already filling up and there are kids in line. Santa comes on in an hour, so be ready."

Before I can even offer a smile and a 'thank you' Abbie has sprinted off like a green blur. Making sure to give Mr Thomas a proper thank you on both of our accounts (and a nice little wiggle as I walk away, I gotta stay on the bosses good side after all) I begin organizing the covers around the lighting next to Santa's chair. The photographer had set up the lights but covering them festively helped with the illusion of Santa's Workshop. Carefully wrapping the red streamers around the light pole to look like a candy cane I felt a brush against the small of my back.
"Hey Abbie. where'd you tear off to?"
"Oh, there's some more props and cotton to use as fake snow in the back. I wanted to really give the place a pop. Can you grab the last two boxes for me?"
Nodding politely I quickly make for the back room. The last thing I need is to be late for actually getting the kids moving. Being on the spot meant I could make or break this underpaying job. The back room was like one of those cages with extra inventory you see on TV all of the time. The placard on the door read 'Winter Holidays' in the most politically correct fashion one could imagine. Stepping into the cage I could only find one box, a wrapped present.
"Is this what she was going on about? Where's the other one?"

The box in her hands was small, but nicely wrapped with shiny red and gold paper and a sparkling gold ribbon. A small name tag lay at an angle Tanya couldn't read. When she shifted the box to see what it said, the lettering very clearly said "Tanya".

Just then, Mr. Thomas stuck his head back into the back room. "Let's go elves, Santa's 30 seconds away." The other elves with the first shift duties scampered out, one actually squealing as she did so.

Already, there was a line of children and parents ready for the appearance of "Old St. Nick". Abbie was there by the chair, beckoning to Tanya frantically.

I was rushing over to Abbey, the poor thing was only a head taller than the first kid to see Santa and she was doing this thing where every sentence was one breath. One word even. She was lie Buddy the elf on the Will Ferrel movie, super hyper and excited. I held up the gift box and set it behind the Santa chair as I slid up by her.

"The tag was cute. Where'd you get it?"

Before she could answer the soft sound of bells grew from behind us and I could her the chair give as someone sat down. Turning I saw this pleasantly rounded belly of a man. With a bulbous nose and bright red cheeks he was every inch the Santa I'd imagined as a child.
