Here is an interesting topic, even more so, with the holiday season upon us. I heard on a New York radio station this past week, a topic about Santa Claus and children. It was 100% of the commercial side, not mixing the commercial vs. religious. The DJ was taking callers comments about this subject:
Does your house celebrate Christmas with the full belief and story etc., behind Santa Claus and if so, do you feel it is right to lie to your kids about something that may or may not be real at all?
My viewpoints on this are as follows:
For starters I DO know the true origin of Christmas, religiously speaking. So this subject does not have to do with that side, but instead solely of the commercial side!
I am just 18 and had grown up with the full belief that Santa was real. Along with all the flying reindeer, the chimney entrance, and so on..I believed it all and must say, I'm so happy I grew up in a household that enjoyed THAT side of Christmas. I loved taking that trip to the mall to sit on Santa's lap. I loved leaving milk and cookies out for Santa, and carrots for his reindeer. I loved being sent to bed with the knowledge that the jolly man would soon arrive, I loved waking up the next morning and seeing only crumbs left on the cookie plate, and seeing stockings full of goodies and presents under the tree, some tagged from Santa himself! I loved and still do love the entire story behind Santa Claus!
Some callers called in with the same viewpoints as I, but others looked at it differently. Some believed that telling that story to their children was flat out lying, which we all know is wrong. But is it bad to lie when the lie is for good fun and does not hurt anyone at all? Some said their children have been told from the start, the truth, that Santa is not real and they do not celebrate Christmas with traditions such as stockings by the fireplace, cookies and milk left out, etc. In fact some callers said they don't even have a single decoration with a picture of Santa, because its all a lie.
I had some concerns and opinions. One, I felt it is sad that so many children are missing out on something that I found to be so exciting and enjoyable and still do now as a young lady. That thought of going to bed as a youngster on Christmas Eve knowing Santa would soon arrive was incredible. Also, how do those children portray THAT side of Christmas to kids at school that DO believe in Santa Claus?
I for one, will hopefully have kids one day. When I do, I will keep the tradition of Santa Claus going strong. I will also enforce the true meaning of Christmas to them. So they will know the origin and true meaning of the day, but will also enjoy the fun and commercial side of it! What about you???
